My biggest struggle is that when I'm listening to someone else sing or listening to a melody, I subconsciously slip into the melody very easily.

you need to listen to yourself instead and shut off any noise. Focus on your own sound, it's the one that matters to you the most. It takes a lot of practice and patience :)

That is one of the most common struggles. Also why you see singers with their finger near their ear. They aren’t blocking it more pressing on the….. Teague (google image) which partially blocks but more so, makes you hear your voice louder in your own head and that makes it easier to focus on your voice and not slip into the other person. Hope that helps 🤷‍♂️

As a harmonist wanna be-er I would sing the one-note harmony with some songs just for the fun of it, but I had no idea it was a thing. I'm dumbfounded.... Love both your sweet voices.

I use this a lot. I've heard it called pedal point harmony where the pedal is not below but above. I'm not a front man singer, but I write out harmonies that I sing with my Dixieland Band. BTW, sometimes the 3rd works best over some sections, of course if the major 3rd gets doubled, it doesn't sound great. BTW, you girls sound great. You should try busking sometime. I had a friend do very well with his Simon and Garfunkel group in the street.

You were looking for examples of songs that can use an upper pedal harmony? I stumbled across this singing this singing in my Dixieland 'band, "All Of Me" (in Bb) Words: "All of me.......why not take all of me .... can't you see...I'm so lost with". You can sing just a D and it sounds pretty good. Then you have to go to a Eb for "out you". The thing that really makes singing harmony a challenge is that you must sing both to the melody note and to the intended chord. The more complicated the chord progression and/or the melody, The harder it is. I have trouble with melodies that have a lot of arpeggios and/or leaps in them. "Darktown Strutters Ball", for example.

Thank you so much; this was so helpful! One of the things I really struggle with when singing harmonies is that my voice wants to naturally align with the main melody. It's like I'm singing the harmony and then I suddenly get "pulled" into singing the melody instead! (Like a magnet!) My solution so far has been to try to "shut out" the melody, but I don't want to stop myself from hearing/internalizing the melody because then I'm not really connecting with the other singer(s). Do you have any tips for how to stop being magnetized back to the melody while I sing?
