I know this is a joke but I have a Kindle with an e-ink display and the refresh rate really isn't that bad. Unless you're heavily interacting with the screen (god forbid using social media), you should have no problems.

high power consumption. If you want the long battery life you have to accept there will be tradeoffs like low refresh. People interested in this for that reason probably aren't interested in using it for video ... heck it's not even color why are people freaking out about refresh... it's obviously not a replacement for the typical smartphone.

@@davidaustin6962 on e-readers I've hacked, they could go back and forth between typical slow refresh mode and fast refresh mode. Maybe the latter consumes more power, but it's nice to have the choice, and only using it when necessary is still gonna give a comparatively great battery life. I wouldn't mind watching videos on something like this, for me it's more about eye strain than battery life. I mean, it's not like people didn't enjoy black and white TV and movies for decades 😊

Sticking up for Will here, just putting it out there. I could totally see my grandparents using this phone and loving it. They don't watch KZread they liked the Kindle when it came out and plus long battery life

I despise the glare screen. I text a lot, mail a lot. I'm always on social media which is mostly static. Even if there's a video on social media, I just want to know what it's saying. Good refresh rate and high res built-in camera are nice but if I have to sacrifice battery life and strain my eyes, I'd say it's an acceptable tradeoff. Honestly speaking, I miss my old Nokia but can't use because of the lack of wifi, internet messaging, social media and decent email client. If I could get all that with the battery life of an old Nokia why wouldn't I buy that? I obviously don't want to buy a prototype though.

There are many advantages to this thing:- 1. Manga Reader 2. Best mobile for someone who travels a lot, as they cannot charge their phone, and always be on the grid. 3. The audio can be enhanced if it is not good on this and can be used to listen to music for a long time, without worrying about the battery. 4. Other things mentioned in the video

Somebody who listens to podcasts and reads almost exclusively on the phone, maybe a backpacker would also enjoy this?

Pretty cheap for a phone. I just spent double that on a new budget phone. OnePlus 6T with 256gb storage and 6gb ram. And the one plus 6t has great battery but not the kind that let's me read all day, do work on my phone, and read/respond to emails all day. The E-ink display is perfect for business people or serious students that could get work done while mobile. Also probably good for travelling, that's the perfect 2nd phone to have and still make calls or have a low power consumption yet clear enough screen in direct sunlight. Idk, I could see myself using this phone a lot and my main traditional phone just for when I care to actually watch a video or snap a good photo.

The technology is awesome for hiking where you can't charge. Could see someone using it to navigate with GPS.

I seriously like the idea! I don't know if it's a prototype but @Will don't give up you're two steps closer to make the phones of the future

+Gear Tech Stuff The future of displays is MicroLED it has all the benefits of OLED (which is currently the best display tech if you do not include the "Burn In" issues) such as being able to turn off individual pixels to achieve deep blacks which also saves power as parts of the screen shut off. It doesn't have problems that OLED has called "Burn In" where organic materials in OLED weaken and get damaged making parts of the display stay on permanently white and the ghosting issues with OLED and it refreshes faster than OLED so you can get a faster refreshing screen and all while consuming less power than OLED

Yeah that's what I was saying, it's pretty impressive that it plays any type of video at all. If it got 2-3x faster it may be tempting in place of oled or IPS because of the insane battery life E-ink brings; it's an exciting prospect.

@@zahidshabir4038 ya but I mean how much battery life are we talking with microled? I couldn't imagine a display that creates light lasting aslong as E-ink does. I'd like to see E-ink technology explored a bit more personally; until we can create batteries the size we need and have them hold exponentially more power, or connect every device to a wireless power source permanently, E-ink may still be useful.

This is a really cool phone. I'm really hyped for e ink technology in general too. Imagine coding on a secondary eink display with a good enough refresh rate.

This is soooo needed. I deal with so many clients with serious eye issues that are exacerbated due to rampant blue light from cell phones and other screens...I would be the FIRST to purchase this...On everything. The host may not understand b/c he doesn't have eye health issues...people who have eye health issues would LOVE to pay $300 for an e-ink phone. There are a few glitches he needs to work out before it comes to market...but this is excellent.

+ and give it a shock proofing as well. so it could be a survival device for camping, long road trips, people who work outdoors in rough environments, ect. even then though...maybe worth 200. certainly not 300 though.

That's literally the type of person this phone would be for tho. Obviously it isnt meant to compete with high end phones out today - it's for the person that doesnt need all those bells and whistles because they're barely ever on their phone anyway. I admit that $100 would be a more suitable price, but some people want to stay connected more than a dumbphone allows for (quick searches for things on Google/Wikipedia, etc on ocassion) yet don't need all the excess. This would be more than sufficient to go camping/hiking, etc....the types of things where a person would wanna be in the moment and wouldn't be on their phone all the time anyway but may still need it. That said, again, $100 would be perfect.

what is the resolution of the screen and can it be bought separately? it would be perfect for a monochrome dlp resin 3d printer.

finally have been waiting for these screens for 4 years :)

​@@pisse3000 even if you watch youtube it is detoxing because you can't watch any fast cut videos without real content but you could still watch "more serious" videos (podcasts, speeches, lectures, etc.) A bit "Rick and morty intellectual" though I don't know if i could change my viewing habits that easily

This looks fantastic for an extended road trip. I'd use it for music, gps, & emergency calling. That battery is amazing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't gray-scale mode on any other smart phone suffice for what this phone does (setting aside the wildly ginormous battery life)?

Couple of points to note. Most batteries power curve is non-linear. So the first few percent drop off quite quickly but it levels out a bit. But more importantly heavy use of e-ink will use the battery up. So playing video on it etc. But general use will not. Emails, reading books etc. For most use of the phone, other than large dynamic screen updates, e-ink uses far less battery power so will last a lot longer.

this would be great for Smartphone Detox but for half the price

It has been only 4 years and we still haven't seen more of these phones invading different markets. I wish to drop my android phone for something like this at the first opportunity. The phone has a special philosophy and I really need this in my life now. I am a programmer and stare the entire day at screens and I wish I could just take a break. An android E-Ink phone will be perfect for checking emails, facebook, maps, making calls, playing music, and occasional reading of books and articles with a simple not too powerful camera.

I'm looking forward to an improvement to the refresh rate. This helps save so much battery but will be useless in darkness ending up straining your eye more... I wish their put forground or background lights (like how old Nokia phones light up their black and white LCDs. The lights can be set to only work in darkness so will still save tons of light

Agree it's too expensive, but would work for my smartphone use: music, GPS, emergency communication.

As someone who travels overseas often. This would be a great backup phone.

What ever happened to the Yota phone from Russia? It had 2 screens, front screen being the normal colored screen and the back screen was in e ink.

It's the only e-ink smartphone in existence. Sure $300 is expensive for regular consumers, but I really don't think they're making bank selling at that price. Hardware production is very expensive to set up, if demand ramps up then prices will go down. Personally I really want this, I just won't buy it if I'm limited to the manufacturer's apps. Need to support the Play Store, even if for most apps the experience will be crappy, there are a few I want for my own personal usage that I know are too niche for the company to support themselves.
