The Dulser of Dark Harbor

Dark Harbor on Grand Manan Island is the dulse capital of the world. Dulsers pick edible seaweed off the low tide. Dulsers tend to run in generations. The seaweed is still picked by hand dried by the sun outside. A Great Big Story by our friends at Jungles in Paris.

This is a great mini-documentary! I really appreciate the quality. Disappointed I can't get dulse anymore like I used to when I lived in Nova Scotia. Seems to be a bit scarce here in Southern Arizona.

I went to grandmanan a few times as a child. We stayed at the seaside haven cottages. I remember the owner of the cottages letting me try some dulse as we picked and ate his Wild strawberrys. Saltiest thing I've ever had. Some of my fondest memories were made on grand manan island. Thanks for an awesome video!!

Thank you, "Great Big Story" and "Jungles in Paris"! A few years ago, my family and I visited West Quoddy Head Lighthouse (Lubec, ME) and saw Grand Manan Island off in the distance. It seemed desolate. Little did I know, that a man was there busily keeping the family tradition going! I wish Mr. Greene the best!

Being born and raised in Japan, and Hawai'i I have a special appreciation for sea vegetables regularly eating about a dozen different kinds. One I have not tried is dulse, but it is on my bucket list. Having roots in Nova Scotia, New England, and Scotland I have a strong desire to try some. I think I'll look up some recipes, and order me some dulse. Thanks for the great mini documentary.

I just got home from Grand Manan. It was my first time over, despite being a New Brunswicker. Beautiful island, wonderful people, stunning landscapes, and beaches.

This was such a cool video! I absolutely love Dulse. I add it to my fruit smoothie every morning for the past 5 years. Dulse has 112 minerals to supercharge your health.

Dulsing comes from Ireland. The name dulse is a Gaelige word for that seaweed and is pronounced dill-usk. Where I come from, there's only two families who still do it, mine included. When you eat it, at first it's crunchy, then your siliva softens it. has a lot of sea salt in it, and is rich in vitamins. It's just great.

4:44 hang on a second... you can't feed a grand mananer bad dulse, they won't accept it, it's gotta be good fresh dulse *immediately chucks dulse on tire*
