The Quiet Splendor of Grand Manan: Camping New Brunswick

On a break from cabin renos, I take a trip to a peaceful little island on the Bay of Fundy. One of Canada's secret little getaways, Grand Manan Island is a paradise for those who cherish a little serenity with just the simple comforts. This visit was in June.

SP, I have been watching your videos for a long time now but I haven't made a comment in some time. That being said, this is one of my all-time favorite videos. The videography is outstanding. My take on you is that you have an above average IQ... Your poetic speech and ability to see beauty in places other people wouldn't even think of is amazing. This video left me with one word... WOW! Educational, entertaining, and beautifully done. A lot of work went into the making of this video and it shows. Thoroughly enjoyable. Outstanding. 👍😁

I had the pleasure of visiting Grand Manan Island again last September, it was some of the most amazing whale watching I've ever done! Saw whales off the ferry, off the coasts and during a whale watching tour with an off season fisherman saw TONS of whales who came right up to our boat. Also saw lots of seals, porpoise and of course the bird watching is second to none.

This video brings me back fond memories of backpacking around New Brunswick, and the Maritimes in 1993. I also went to PEI. Those fabulous wooden buildings and grey painted very square churches. Glorious architecture. I did not lave the pleasure of Grand Manan, ut loved Lunenburg and Fredericton. So beautiful. I loved the people of all of the Maritimes!

Dulse has been in my diet since I was very young child, now 70. Love it. Peel the layers apart, then eat. You can also "fry" this in a hot pan and it will crisp up in seconds, then you can break up and add as a topping to lots of dishes. I eat it as a snack. This island was on my bucket list as well, but thanks to your splendid video, I got to experience this wonderful place. Thanks again and hope you enjoyed your visit.

Slim, your ferry trip reminded me that I've been planning to tell you about a way that you may be able to save a good amount on a ferry trip to Newfoundland when you're ready to go. A few years ago we went to Newfoundland with our 2007 Jeep Liberty and 2009 Aliner Classic. By using a shorter ball mount on the hitch and removing the spare tire and front licence plate bracket I got the whole rig under 30 feet and saved about $100 on the fare. I don't know if it would work for you, but maybe.

We spent a week in August years ago on Grand Manan Island. We saw whales and visited White Head Island and a puffin/tern colony on Machias Seal Island as well! We stayed 4 nights at an off-grid cabin on the southwest coast and 2 nights tenting on the cliffs just east of Hole-in-the-Wall park. After we left, according to the news, a drug dealer's house was burnt to the ground on the island!

Canada is a country about water. It has so many wonderful islands, both on the east and on the west. I suspect there are also many islands to be discovered to the north Anyone who has traveled in BC or Alberta will remember the huge power of all the rushing rivers and streams. Yukon must be more of that. A wonderful watery world.

My wife and I happened to go to Grand Manan about 10 or 12 years ago and camped at the same campground as you. We drove around the island and stopped at a foghorn installation overlooking a cliff on the north end of the island. While looking over the expanse she lamented how we wouldn’t see any whales from the land and I said to her that yes it’s possible. She scoffed and no sooner had she finished than a pair of Minke whales surfaced below and swam by. A great experience during a great trip through the Maritimes.

Bit of advice from someone who sea kayaks off the coast of Northern California, always keep your paddle in the water and keep paddling, regardless of the waves and most especially when there are waves. You'll have much more control over your boat. If you can head into the waves, it's better than having them hit you from the side. You're doing great Slim, I know I'm impressed, took me awhile before I put into open water.

I love your videos. But I must admit they’re to short. Your commentary is such a lesson in enjoying the simple things. I could listen to your voice all day. No matter where you are your videography is second to none. Keep the videos coming.😊
