Reece cob, where did you read up on this, I’m trying to find some info online but struggling to find stuff specifically pertaining to sambar, mostly reds and fallow for the DS score. Much appreciated.

Theres not much if any online info hence my delve in a while ago. There is info out there but have tk do a fair bit of digging an talking to guys in the loop or who have the hard copy book with the specifics about different horned animals etc. I spent alot of time on it back then.. it was exhausting

Yeah for sure there is, if you can hang a Ring off the point, its a bonus and would be a "point off inner" or "point off outter" perhaps, if it was on a brow "extra point on brow" , ive seen it on a score card that had a 7 pointer.

Hi hilldog. I think the Douglas score is a bit out dated if that’s the right words . Our Sambar are wider than they are long. Why are we expecting something that doesn’t grow “square” naturally to be square when we score it. A deer stalkers club founding member has wanted to put in a motion to change this to actually fit our sambar . Add 1.5 inches both sides then after that start penalising the heads.

Best idea is to remove spread n span n forget width. How wide an animal grows has no relevance on its genetics. However the Douglas score penalises for overspread but that is also gained by better spread and span measurements so it’s not necessarily about square heads. Square heads don’t get the spread n span extra wide heads do. How the 3 times rule fits in not sure. Too complicated

Matt Merrick Videography 'Walking Them Up' thanks Matt. So just go with the length of each tine, diameter of beams etc and leave out the width.

The hunters ministry yep length, tines, beam and coronets. Douglas is always double the score of the smaller of the comparison tines etc. Maybe just add em up regardless... it about the animal antlers as a whole?

The spread and span are wrong mate. Spread is the wisest point of the antler and span is taken from inside basically from where you measure inner and outer from from one side to the other.

Why don't you make a video with an accredited scorer, that way you will be giving people the correct information, there are plenty of scorers in Victoria. You have the ADA Chief Measurer there.

Are these guys approachable if you are not a member and don't have big heads? I'm keen to film someone who knows the actual system and wants to lend 5 minutes to speak it, or better, one of them Filmed themselves explaining how, instead of it being taboo 👍. Cheers mate

Its not secret business, but there is a reason becoming a scorer is a 2 day training program mate, there alot of pitfalls and tricks, and if you are not scoring heads regularly its easy to forget or muck up a measurement. Most clubs have scorers, its the best way to get them done. Your clip is well intended, but doesn't really achieve your aim. The system was developed to measure the quality of the herd, and the effect of deer management. Its not about who has the best head, it was a way to see if selective harvest improved the herd against the mythical perfect head, that being one which is symetrical etc. Personally I would go over spread Sambar every time, they look awesome. Blokes need to not get so fixed on scores, be proud of your trophies, focus on the hunt, not the result. I have a 23 inch stag at home that is still one of my favorite hunts, the 27.5 beside him, was way less memorable.

Absolutely GanG, cool to see your still around the interwebs, that 23, would of been with the 45-70, from memory? I hear ya loud n clear, it's just cool to have some 'form' of measure for some of us with a head or two at home and maybe wanna 'size' them up against one another, this shows 'a way'. And it's definately not THE way... But it's a bit like Everyone's PB cod... Always a little longer than the tape said after a couple Bev's... Ha ha , I feel someone is going to come to modern terms an upload something more official, Perhaps ADA ? That's make for se good viewing, Douglas scoring The species and keeping it some what, simple. 👍. Warm barrels mate
