The Dos and Don'ts of LinkedIn for College Students and Beginners

I've created this video as a guide to help you successfully and professionally present yourself on LinkedIn. As a student or new user on LinkedIn, it's tricky to know exactly what to do. Once you've made some connections, how do you keep them engaged and grow your network? What is appropriate to post and what is not? What is considered basic LinkedIn "etiquette?" This professional networking website is unlike any other social media network you've ever used before. It has its own set of unwritten rules that are very different from Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Your employer might see it, so you want to put your best foot forward.
Some definitive steps you can take:
1) check LinkedIn regularly
2) don't connect with complete strangers
3) send an introductory message to new connections
4) engage your LinkedIn network
5) Be mindful of your audience - post relevant, appropriate content
6) Take advantage of the LinkedIn endorsement feature for your connections
7) have a thorough, complete profile
8) Response to messages from recruiters in your inbox
9) remember your future employer will see this!
The main keys are engagement, intentionality and professionalism. Keep these in mind and you'll do just fine.

Thank you for this playlist, it helps me a lot. Before that I didn’t really understand the purpose of Linkedin but now I’m ready to create my profile. But a question came to my mind when you mentioned the person who posted something that was irrelevant to their carrier. What if I have multiple carrier paths? For example, I’m a student in Psychology but I’ve always been a creative person and plan to create a business that’s more in the creative field. Should I create a separate account for it or should I combine everything in one profile?

Hi! It's your profile, so what you chose to post is up to your discretion. These are simply some suggestions based on my observations. If it is something you want to pursue professionally, then it could be considered part of your career.

Thank you for the video! I have a question though... Does it matter the amount of connections someone has on LinkedIn?

Hey Daniela, the point of LinkedIn is to create a solid network of people who can attest to your work ethic and vice versa. Some people can do that with 30 connections, some need 300+. So, in short, it doesn't matter! Anyway, you will build up your network over time
