The disabled Ukrainians facing a lifetime of mistreatment and abuse - BBC News

Warning: Viewers may find some images in this report distressing.
BBC News has gained access to institutions in Ukraine where widespread abuse and mistreatment of disabled people has been uncovered.
Around 100,000 children and young people live in these institutions, which pre-date the war with Russia.
Human rights investigators say Ukraine should not join the European Union until it closes these institutions.
The Ukrainian government has promised a series of reforms over the past few years, acknowledging that its system of institutionalisation needs to change.

Shame on the people commenting that this is not neglect. IT IS. This country has done this for years. They have no regards for the disabled. Shame on you if you think this is normal, and that Ukraine is innocent.

@@minnimaria1358 Russia and many countries have disgusting policies towards the disabled. I am very aware of that. But to say that this problem is related to the Russia/Ukraine conflict is my issue. In the US several news were out some weeks ago about how the war has caused this. That’s not true!! Many past documentaries prove that wrong. Ukraine is one of the many who are cruel to their disabled. When News about Russia blaming harsh conditions for the disabled- on Ukraine, come out, I will say the same! Disgusting

I was working in a nursing home in Germany. And I can tell you from first hand, that there're staff shortages everywhere in the world in healthcare. Because it has never been a priority to any government to pump enough money in healthcare system. It is slightly worst in eastern Europe but even in Germany I've had 12 patients with progressed dementia, all of them were difficult to handle and if they didn't want to take a shower, than 4 staff members needed, 3 to hold him and one to wash him. There's no other way unfortunately. Every minutes, every seconds of days we're busy. Luckily in Germany institutes like these can pay some extra staff to take patients out sometimes or to play with them and they have some volunteers as well, which are both missing in eastern Europe. But I still think, even with these few hours a week extra attention patients were not happy at all, nobody have time to give them the proper care they would get from their own family...

It's so easy to judge when one dosn't know the reality. Each child/adult/elderly person, needs to go to the toilet, eat, and be entertained or left to find their own entertaintenment. I am speaking of my mum with high energy, scrambled brain, impulsivity, aggression because of frustration, habits like self harming, poo smearing, self defeating habits mostly, and danger to themselves. It's very difficult to be working/ caring in that environment without adequate breaks, understanding, respect, psychological help, economical comfort, stimulation. The world needs to put resources to tackle this, but we haven't even stopped hunger! And the people throwing the bombs just for fun are certainly not helping, they must be confronted and stopped. People need dignity and compassion to be able to thrive

that's unlikely today, but in the UK, it was probably about the same 30-40 years ago. if ukraine joins the EU, it will be the per capita poorest member. disability care looks like this in most poor countries, it's not specifically a soviet thing. though in some other countries particularly in asia, it's more common for disabled people to be imprisoned or chained up by their own families (a result of no government programs being offered, cultural familial responsibility, and familial face-saving by hiding disabled people from anybody outside of the family).

Individuals with physical and developmental disabilities are often restrained for their own safety or the safety of others (staff and other residents). I don't believe that any institution can perfectly address each and every need of disabled individuals in their care no matter where in the world. It is a sad reality. I worked at a residential treatment facility for autistic adult males and was surprised by it functioning more like a prison until I was physically assaulted. The staff do their best and I imagine it had top-quality care compared to other facilities in other nations.

“Unfortunately nature decided their fate”, where is the compassion? This is more than lack of resources, there is clearly a lack of compassion. People with disabilities are seen as less than. The discrimination in Ukraine is disgusting, from disability to race. I could of ended up in one of these places, instead I’m studying a degree and I have a partner and a child. In Ukraine I’d be tied to a bed. Some of the comments here are shocking, the UK as far as I’m aware at 35 years old with a disability, does have compassion and understanding. I fall down people make sure I’m safe, not tie me to a bed xxx

Your ignorance and unquestioning obedience is vital in allowing the corrupting influence of power to grow and grow. Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority. There is no worse heresy than that the office sanctifies the holder of it. That is the point at which . . . the end learns to justify the means. Ukraine has tremendous natural resources for meeting domestic oil and gas production needs, with estimates of approximately 900 billion cubic meters of proven reserves of natural gas. In Europe, Ukraine ranks second for gas reserves. Three Ukrainian regions contain hydrocarbons resources: the Dnipro-Donetsk basin, the Carpathian region in western Ukraine, and the Black Sea and Crimea region in the south. The Dnipro-Donetsk basin is a major oil and gas producing region accounting for 90 percent of all current Ukrainian production. The structure of hydrocarbons production in Ukraine is as follows: natural gas 89 percent, oil 7.9 percent, and gas condensate 3.1 percent. The primary source of hydrocarbons in Ukraine is natural gas, though the most lucrative gas reserves are located below 5,000 meters. For an intro into the character and mind of the Ukraine leader. I don't agree with tying people, but if you don't have the appropriate environment and enough carers, that person could run into the road, or bang their heads repeatedly against the walls. All this, is very complex and can only be resolved with love, discipline and all hands on deck and realism. Judgement from afar doesn't usually help

I don't understand the criticism honestly. yes there are people with untreatable disabilities. They are looked after by dedicated people as best as the budget allows. where do you see an abuse? there is no treatment that cures mental+physical disabilities like this even in richer places. If you are heartbroken by the fact that some children are unfortunately born this way, go ahead adopt one. No? Then stop enforcing moral standards that you don't have yourself on others

What should be known is that these children have abilities. A lot of them would have been able to talk and possibly walk if people learned them. Just because a person has disabilities does not mean they are not capable of learning these things. But there needs to be put in a lot of effort in the critical ages. And ofcourse warmth and affection is needed to grow. And before you say if you care do it yourself, I allready do care for the most vulnerable, this is my work (behavioral scientist).

Instead of asking western countries for ever more money and weapons, maybe Selensky should ask for doctors, nurses, physical therapists and volunteers to come and help.
