One of THE VERY BEST war movies with a lot of famous actors. Back at a time when Hollywood knew how to make a movie right. I'm sure I have watched it 50 times.

You never again see such a group of classic actors. Cassavetes was a very sharp and energetic actor and steals the scene. 😎😎😎

Can't see why they would even consider taking somebody as crazy as Telly Savalass on that mission?

Franco's counting off out of "sync" with his voice made me remember one nite in Marine boot on Parris Island back in '75...you go thru a whole ritual before you "mount your racks" and one of them is while standing "On Line" (the line in front of your racks) you stand at attention then the DI gives the command EYES RIGHT...and every little head better snap to the right (so in the DI's words; he can hear those necks snapping) hard in unison...then he calls COUNT OFF and one by one you snap your head to the left and in a very robust voice yell your number....the DI's expect it to be flawless or you'll keep doing it until it is...One nite for no reason (it was well into 3rd phase and we were staring to think we were badasses and were getting a little slap happy) when we called our numbers people started altering their vocal octaves...the DI we had that nite was our cruelest one and he made us do it 2 more times but we refused to do it right...for the only time in boot we were told "okay ladies, good night" and he shut off the lights and went into his hutch...no Marine Corps hymn, no Mount Up ritual...we all just stood there dumbfounded thinking Oh Shit what have we done....eventually we all got off line and crawled silently into our racks....we didn't have long to wait...I would guess about 1:00 am the lights came on and our DI was screaming Outside Platoon Formation, we all started scrambling as usual to get dressed when he told us Outside Platoon Formation, Skivvies and flip flops....right then we knew we were screwed. There was a spot across from 3rd Battalion barracks known as the Rose Garden, it was a bunch of thorny vines under some oak trees...they took us there a couple times to PT us when we had screwed up on the drill field, but that was in boots and utilities so it hurt but wasn't a huge deal...sure enough he marched us across the street and PT'd the hell out of...in just white underwear we were all covered in punctures from the thorns, with many having thorns in them, he marched us back and put us back to bed with no clean up...at 5:00 am when we awoke to our normal screaming ritual of Hurry Up, Faster, Faster, to get fully dressed in 90 seconds and being locked on the line we dressed with the thorns still in us and went thru our typical boot day with them in us...it was a very grueling day...it wasn't until that nite that we got to clean ourselves up and get the thorns out....that nite our DI said Okay ladies let's try again EYES RIGHT then Count OFF...and we did it to rabid perfection....the DI just smiled.

i'm currently in a cardiac rehab program, the last exercise is using weights and they want you to count as you're doing 2 sets of 15 arm curls and 15 arm lifts because it prevents you from holding your breath and causing your blood pressure to spike. when we get to 11 everyone screams it out and any new people look around confused wondering WTF till their told some guy about 20 years ago when they started the program would scream out 11 in homage to ."Franco" and they've been doing it ever since.

The thing is, the ass whooping didn't change Franko's attitude at all.

The whole climax of this scene is when Maj. Reisman kicks Franco's ass then everyone marches again and looks sharp. This is a great clip but it was cut too short. Why!?

  • @eastvanmungo

Because this scene is about Franko just as much as it's about Reisman. Sure Reisman, kicks his ass, and sure the squad marches slightly better afterwards... but not Franko, he's carried away. And the beating doesn't change his attitude. Franko takes more convincing than the others because he's the only one that isn't insane, stupid or misunderstood,,, he's a true sociopath. It's not until Reisman shows his anti-authoritarian streak that Franko starts coming around.

Great movie...have the CD watch it occasionally along with Kelly's Heroe's another classic. Read the book/novel on the Dirty Dozen. Very dark and the Lee Marvin's character is open to chance at the end.....very unsettling.
