A Marine scout sniper in WWII, Marvin saw the savage reality of combat few others witnessed firsthand. The trauma of intense jungle fighting alongside lost brothers-in-arms shaped his view that most war movies glorified carnage but lacked honesty. When the rousing tale of "The Dirty Dozen" became a massive hit, its glossy take on a ragtag group's mission struck Marvin as implausible Hollywood fare, not history.
Drawing from archival interviews where Marvin sparingly opens up, the video plunges into his searing critique that "The Dirty Dozen" and many others ignored war's unvarnished horror. You'll learn how the film's stylized violence and aging stars made light of sacrifice for mass entertainment. Most poignantly, Marvin expresses how his later, much smaller film, "The Big Red One," came closest to conveying the grim stakes through a lens of painful realism.
By blending Marvin's perspective with contextual insight into his service, this video shines a light on his nuanced dissent against jingoistic myths on the silver screen. For anyone interested in war's messy realities beyond valorized tales, how one disgruntled veteran fought sensationalism, or the humanity behind public figures, "Lee Marvin: Deconstructing the Myths of War" offers a rare window into an uncomfortable truth few dared speak. It's a thought-provoking must-watch for our times.
Be sure to watch to the very end to discover the reasons why Lee Marvins hated "The Dirty Dozens" and other fun facts about him.

As a retired Navy corpsman, I'd agree with Mr. Marvin. Hollywood is first concerned with money-making, never expect accuracy, just go for vacant entertainment.

I agree, but I enjoy entertaining movies as well. If you should know how an actual battle goes in detail, it would get an adults only or X rating.

Lee was certainly a very versatile actor from tough guy roles to comical roles such as Donavins Reefe with John Wayne or Cat Balou to name a few

Love Lee Marvin and his movies but I can understand feelings about the Dirty Dozen. PTSD was not recognised at the time and many thousands of service men suffered from it. As for the film itself it was poetic licence, even I know the cast were over 30 plus though some had military experience, front line service men were aged between 18 to 30. I still love watching this film and respect for their portrayals, I even read the book by Cornelius Ryan most of which never made it to the screen.

Basically, you’re never gonna have basic training with your final deployment team dirty dozen is a lot like basic training but the team realistically should’ve been split up and only one member should’ve gone on the actual mission

SPOILER******** Well it would have taken more than one member of the team to have wiped out that massive number of the German High Command in that one chateau with grenades and gasoline at the movie conclusion. It’s not like The Dirty Dozen is all that realistic but it’s still a memorable film IMHO.

Only one member would be on that team because the other 11 were too dirty that’s why it’s called the few in the proud because only one can cut the mustard, This is not how units are created. They are trained and then Decimated then deployed. You could see 11 soldiers could pass training, but one person is not gonna make it, my training was 55 guys and 52 graduated, we wanted those 3 guys to fail that’s real life

I think people want to see a sensationalized the war, or movies with Rambo and Schwarzenegger? The movie called Blackhawk down was very true to the facts. They won several Awards for how real it was . I was a Ranger in the 90s. I was in that Attack, which turned into a lot more then we expected . The men we lost were he real names at the End. I’ve been military for 30 years. I went through an ROTC and came in as a Second, Lieutenant. That was some scary times. But we we’re brothers. We had each others back. I’m in the Guard now. I keep myself n the game .

even as a 7 year old seeing the film when it first came out back in '67, I thought of the film as nothing more than exciting entertainment (still do). It seemed too silly to be real to me. I got a completely different reaction when I saw The Green Berets the following year. Though it was also an over-the-top war actioner, I felt the often extreme violence was too jarring to be entertaining. I had more respect for A Bridge Too Far and especially The Big Red One, which I consider to be the best movie about actual war ever made.

The mission would have been unrealistic even with a dozen crack army Rangers or Navy Seals. To accomplish that with a bunch of criminals is silly. One of the dozen,(Maggott) the Telly Savalas character was useless to the cause.
