The Difference between ASCAP and BMI
Музыка
In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Todd Brabec is the Vice President and Director of Membership for the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). He talks about the differences between ASCAP and BMI. One of the main differences is the reason each organization was founded. ASCAP is a writer and publisher owned organization dedicated to enforcing the copyright law. BMI is a corporation owned by the broadcasting industry. The two organizations also differ in other ways such as payment formulas. Also in this segment, Brabec stresses the affiliation regulations. Writers have to join one or the other. However, writers are free to switch to the other organization. The significance of a good relationship with foreign societies is covered as well. Brabec also focuses on the importance of having a contact at the performing rights organization (PRO). Also in this segment, he offers some advice. Brabec recommends knowing information such as the PRO's philosophy and if they pay correctly in certain areas.

If you select BMI you will have an army of collection agents that will shake down small bars for jukebox and cover band performance royalties for you.
Todd is who took me into ASCAP as a songwriter many years ago. Still with them.
Sad More people havnt viewed this! this is good infomation!!! Alot of Producer dont even know what bmi and ascao is!
Royalties are nice, but just being able to share your music worldwide is a powerful feeling itself

i read it and its a good think to get informed before doing somehing. so im gonna read further on that topic when im registering anything. thanx. happy holidays :)
Go to the homepage and look under "people" and search under Todd Brabec and it should bring the clips up.
Knowledge is power....
It's titled, "Music Publishing Companies: Your Rights When You Sell Your Music." I'd link it, but KZread-Google's not a fan of linking in the comments (probably to avoid spammers). Let me know if it helps you and/or if you have any more questions.
Vince Tofanicchio is now on KZread
for an underground producer like myself who's just tryna sell his music ( which has had success in different places around the world but still isn't " mainstream " ) which would be a good pick for me? :O im new to trying to sell my beats cause i mean i love making beats and all but if i were to get paid for it even better :3
nice video! what about JACAP-as I am from the Caribbean
Todd is the beast
i accessed the site, but how's the post named?
Good video.
how much does it cost to join BMI and how much to register works?
i am part of ascap, should i choose them to promote my music as well? why or why not?

Technically, they don't PROMOTE music. They simply collect performance royalties. Sounds like you want to think about getting into a publishing administration type situation. Do online research about publishing and songwriting.
Do I need to register with acap for pubister
So you prefer BMI?
i need help please help me to sign bmi
what does ascap do for me if i sell an audio clip (copyrighted/registered with ascap) through a royalty free site, and that clip ends up in a tv show/documentary that is being aired alot?

skepsys Collect ur royaltiez. P.S. - If u end up on network TV, ur royaltiez could b thousandz 4 just a few minutez of material. Cable TV - hundredz 4 da same material
@Twanbeatmaker i know what u mean, i have met plenty of them.
If a writer is from Australia and is a member of APRA/AMCOS, do they also need to join ASCAP or BMI if they write a song for a US artist?
@makeupholism

You need to check if you afiliated to APRA/AMCOS for the World or just Australia. If you afiliated for the WORLD, you performing rights organization probably has a deal with either ASCAP or BMI to collect your royalties in the US.
You inspired a blog post! If you affiliated yourself with ASCAP, you have agreed, first, with ASCAP that your songs will retrieve royalties from all who use who use your content based on the current method of payment that ASCAP upholds. From ASCAP: "With very few exceptions, ASCAP will not honor an irrevocable assignment of writer’s royalties." For more information (here's the blog pitch), search for PlayGrind online.
You can be with BMI AND ASCAP if you are a Publisher, right?

Hello! I would be very grateful to you for the tip!))) I - DJ. I want to record the mixes of the popular all over the world tracks and upload them to KZread, Facebook. Doing live shows. Please tell me how to solve the problem of copyright in the complex? To not talk to each author individually. Sign up for some music network? ASCAP, BMI? Or any other company? Please tell me what to do? Thank you! I do not really know English and because I use google translator)))

@@NickBryant Can't help but think that out of the 40,000 songs a day released on Spotify and other platforms there are some great songs that aren't going to become hits. Also, for the most part my favourite music isn't wildly popular; there are plenty of you tube clips I love with under 100 views, whilst there are clips with more than a billion views I don't watch. One thing's definitely true and that's that if you don't play it to someone, no one's going to hear it! 😀

Good Information, but I rather not deal with either of them.

Unless you’re selling a bunch of records you don’t need them. You DO need to copyright your material. A DBA for a publishing company is around $10 at your local tax office.
@djnekkon

@@nitrocw what if your bunch of records end up being monetized by somebody else on youtube or a digital platform? DBA sound more like a business name. which has nothing to do with keeping your bunch of records stolen.
I'm sure this video was chock-full of info, but I couldn't understand a thing he said! I wish he had either spoken more slowly or treated the viewers as though they had never heard of ASCAP or BMI... This video went way over my head even though I'm already familiar with the info!

BMI charges $250 for publishers, and you want to be a writer as well as a publisher, so ASCAP is actually the cheaper option
@NorthPhillyFlyBoy

you aren;t with BMI as a publisher, you are with them as a writer. That is free for both. Publisher sign up costs for both.

There is but it looks very bleak right now
BMI and ASCAP have been calling small restaurants and threatening them with ourageous law suits simply because they have a live performer there...The person I spoke to over the phone at BMI said that they own the rights to half of all songs in the world so they just assume the performer is playing their songs...The venue owner is in effect forced to fire the performer...This abuse of power is causing local music scenes to become a thing of the past...BMI & ASCAP doesn't this to go viral

Phillip Craft Yes this is true...
I am BMI lyrics writer but the songs are sung by a ASCAP singer member. they recorded without permission .they my work in their libraries and have not got paid. I have no contract but I use my writing as a hired writer for artists who are contracted with these people.My name is not on the work or my Llc from where they are getting the lyrics and who is writing the song.credit is not being given to the right owner of the song. ownership .
why not just hire a legal advisor/Attorney?
