Well look what happened to the Knights of the Templar, they were framed, tortured, killed, and forced to sign false confessions. All because they were becoming too powerful as far as riches and numbers. Who's to say Gilles de Rais didn't uncover some plot, or have dirt on someone in the Catholic church, and they in turn framed him. Seems to be a re occurring thing in history.

He owned two strategic castles, Champtocé & Ingrandes, that the Dukes of Brittany had been trying to get possession of since before he was born. Plus he was instrumental in the liberation of Orléans & the crowning of the King. He was tried in Brittany, which signed a treaty with England halfway through his trial. Smearing him was politically useful - it meant Charles VII owed his throne to two heretics & possible black magicians.

Such is a theory, yet one thing we know from original (and by extension authority sources) of satan (e.g. the Bible) is that he is characterized as being an extraordinary liar. Hence it would follow that he may not fulfill his promises, nor even that those who wish to follow him (be like him) should be trusted.

Just a cool tid-bit, Gilles was actually exonerated back in 1992 of his "crimes". There was no evidence to say he had anything to do with the deaths of children and/or Satanist practices. His wife's family hated him dearly due to how he spent his money. They were able to get the church and even the King who originally had much respect for Gilles to go against him. I recommend reading some books on this dude. Interesting life full of war, tragedy, and not much luck. He would spend money on lavish plays about the 100 years war he fought in a long with Joan of Arc, and would feed the people in the town regularly. He kept them busy and in the money due to his plays needing much work from people such as carpenters and seamstresses. And on another note, he confessed to the crimes after hours of torture. He signed a document and you can see how worn out he was just through his signature. People tend to confess to get out of torture and hopefully be put to death quickly instead.

Joris Karl Huysmans’ classic novel of the Decadence, Là Bas details the story of Gilles de Rais from the perspective of a writer chronicling his fall into darkness and his eventual trial for heresy and auto-da-fé (death as means of expiration of sin). It’s beautiful how Huysmans writes of de Rais’ contrition and absolution, going to his death a restored Catholic Christian. @andrew hager Torture was commonly used to extract confessions in those days, it could certainly be argued that he knew he was about to be brutally tortured until he either died or confessed and then they would kill him. The confession doesnt hold much water and the witness who gave testimony against him could easily have been bribed or extorted. I believe he was guilty but we definitely don't know, the evidence is really weak.

He was called Blackbeard, even before the pirate. He is believed to be the first documented male serial killer in Medieval Times. The first documented female serial killer was the poisoner Locusta, who worked for Emperor Nero during his reign of the Roman Empire. By serial killer, I only mean in the modern sense of the word. Vlad the Impaler and Countess Elizabeth Bathory would both be considered serial killers by that contemporary standard. You would be surprised how many crazy and evil people, who were theoretically considered to be either insanely sociopathic or dangerously psychotic, can be categorized as serial killers and/or serial rapists by the updated methods of psychology that psychiatrists use in determining if historical figures could possibly have suffered from mental disorders such as psychopathy.

@I Moha He was never even called Bluebeard in his lifetime. That's a late nineteenth century fallacy. If there was a real Bluebeard, a better claimant would be Comorre the Cursed, a Breton king who was supposed to have killed his wives. But it's an old story which crops up in various cultures all over the world.

Interesting, because Baring-Gould didn't write the Gilles de Rais chapters himself. He simply translated them from a mid-19th century schlock writer called Paul Lacroix, who had published a "more circumstantial" version of the trial record. It was the first version ever published, & it was a forgery. Most of the misapprehensions about GdR can be traced back to Lacroix. gillesderaiswasinnocent.blogspot.com/2016/05/gilles-as-werewolf-bibliophile-jacob.html

This is a strategy used by narcissists and psychopaths since the beginning of time. For those of us who aren"t deeply disturbed, knowing this fact can be crucial for surviving well in todays world.

God is benevolent or actually non existent as far as what the word god itself entails. Divinity however the essence of all that is and nothing, the positive and negative is real. It is our sentience and the relation of conscience to this cosmic force that allows for the misconceived conception that our freewill to aid in either creation or destruction makes one path right or wrong. In reality though divinity is benevolent and cares not which path we choose. The only place It really matters is in the continued survival of our own species.

You’re referring about LaVeyyan Satanism, which is not a violent type of Satanism. This is a different type of Satanism, called Luciferian Satanism. They often engage in human sacrifice, mostly they love to offer innocent children to the devil in order to gain power and riches. In other rituals, they also mutilate their very own bodies and offer their blood at the altar. They also consume human waste, such as urine and feces. I believe even the Laveyyan followers would despise these type of Satanists.

There is a really interesting political subtext to all this, but you won't find it on short videos or clickbait articles, because those are all about the blood & guts. For instance, GdR was a French war hero on trial in Brittany, which was an independent duchy. His judge, the Bishop of Nantes, sided with England & had led several embassies to London. The Duke signed a major treaty with England during the trial. How bad would it have looked if Charles VII owed his throne to TWO commanders who had been executed for heresy? Also, Brittany was broke. And the Duke coveted two strategic castles, Champtocé & Ingrandes, which his father had tried to seize years ago. He had actually bought those castles, but not legally - the Duke wasn't allowed to enter into financial transactions with his vassals. There's much more.

Yo this dude was framed in my eyes, i watched another video on this, explaining the context of the catholic church at the time, he stood in DIRECT opposition to many of their wishes. He was also staunch allies with Joan of arc who suffered a similar fate (accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake by the SAME catholic church). When he kidnapped that clergy member, it was because he was guarding one of Gils OWN properties. This was an insult, and being the warrior that he was briefly kidnapped him before letting him go. To this day there hasn't been one shred of evidence besides the "confessions". Not even one bone fragment (you'd think with killing supposed 100s of children there might be 1!! Bone fragment. On the note of the church being named the "holy innocence" France lost literal generations to this war, and that verse in the Bible is about the death of children yes, but Gil helped bring about the end of the war and this naming might indicate that he was ready to be done. The confessions were signed after the witnesses had been tortured for hours and possibly days. This was also AFTER they publicly testified in FAVOR of Gil. Would you A. Suffer medieval torture under the threat of EVEN MORE TORTURE or B. Sign a false confessions for a quick death (something that Gil himself did). It was also common practice to ALWAYS burn those accused of witchcraft, odd that the catholic church granted him this request. Seems like he might NOT have been guilty of the crimes? What do large figures/people of power do to someone they want gone? TO THIS DAY they accuse people of devil worship, canabolism and pedophilia. Funny too, yes there were children disappearing back then, yes there was pedophilia. But who TO THIS DAY!!! Has a huge pedophilia problem ? Bingo the catholic fucking church. They pinned the disappearance of young children on this ONE guy to 1. Paint him as a horrendous monstrosity 2. Defer responsibility 3. To gain his properties and aquire his gold (which they most certainly did and the catholic church got a hefty sum from this) Definitely don't take my word though, I'm just presenting the counter argument in a more meaningful way. Believe what you will. Maybe he did do it after all. But in my eyes, the evidence points to "no"

Cool story tho, this is the first video I've watched from you guys and I've enjoyed it a lot thank you very much and keep up the good work. 👏

To those who think Gilles was framed, it’s certainly possible, but consider the fact that the church was already the most powerful institution in Europe and had massive amounts of influence, why would it be necessary? By the time Gilles’s crimes were discovered, he was already in debt after selling off several of his lands and had virtually very little wealth left to be claimed by the church. The church he’d constructed was already seized by tax collectors and it was well known that there were an untold amount of disappearances of children around that time, specifically of children who vanished near or around properties Gilles owned. On top of that the speculation that he contacted Francois Prelati to attempt to summon a demon to reinstate his fortunes is indeed plausible given that there would’ve been no other recourse to do so and at the time black magic was often seen as a method of gaining riches and power at a terrible cost, usually through human sacrifice. On top of that and the stresses of debt, Gilles’s confession actually came before he was tortured at all, and though no bodies were found Gilles explained that the corpses were burned at his castle and the ashes either scattered in the woods or dumped in local waterways. Even if you take into account that the confession seems rather contradictory seeing as Gilles supposedly killed both for pleasure and later to supply body parts for rituals, it does seem likely that Gilles was simply a sexual sadist who enjoyed committing acts of depravity and when his wealth began depleting he saw an avenue to combine his love of child murder with his desire to summon demonic spirits to regain his riches. So was he framed? It’s possible, but it’s more likely that at least part of the story is true seeing as he had multiple accomplices, including two of his cousins who were seen delivering children to Gilles’s castle who were subsequently never seen again. On top of that the sword Gilles used in the killing was found in his quarters, and there did appear to be heavy blood stains on it. And before anyone says he used it to boar hunt or kill animals or something take into account that Gilles was a nobleman with servants who prepared his meals for him and that particular type of sword was not used in hunting, but for war specifically. So whether he was guilty or innocent is up to interpretation, but it seems to me that he was likely a serial killer who murdered an untold number of children

I agree that it's mostly a matter of interpretation, but first you have to have the correct facts to interpret. And you are basing your argument on some quite glaring errors. To begin with, any plot against Gilles was nothing to do with the Church, although the Church was certainly weaponised against him. His estate was confiscated (a fortnight before he was arrested) by Jean V. If we're following the money, the trail goes straight to the Duchy of Brittany. Gilles' judge was the Bishop of Nantes, which muddies the waters a bit, but he was also the Chancellor of Brittany. And a lifelong Anglophile, which meshes neatly with the political aspects of a Breton plot against a French war hero. Incidentally, there was a long series of court cases after his death & ALL the confiscated estates ended up back in the Rais family. Most of the property sales, to the Duke or his straw men, were illegal. Gilles' financial situation has also been exaggerated. He was NOT broke or "down to his last two castles". He had, in fact, just exchanged the border castles of Ingrandes & Champtocé for the entire Barony of Rais. He had what we would now call cash-flow problems, hence the pawning of his movables (almost all of which were subsequently redeemed). His confession did not come before he was tortured, unless you mean his first confession (the one nobody talks about) in which he confessed only to alchemy. This wasn't a crime in itself; it was acceptable as a philosophy & a hobby of the rich. What was illegal was "arquémie", the attempt to turn base metals into gold, & that was what Gilles accepted as an offence. It was also illegal, of course, to invoke the aid of demons, but he explicitly denied this. This is the chronology of the relevant section of the trial - October 20th Gilles has nothing to say to the indictment. Torture is considered. October 21st The judges send for Gilles to have him tortured. He asks for the torture to be deferred until the next day; it is deferred merely until the afternoon unless he confesses. No promise is made to waive the torture altogether, even a full confession will only defer it until the next day. Gilles makes his out-of-court confession in his living quarters. October 22nd Gilles’ in-court confession. Atypically, the court sat in the evening; he was almost certainly tortured in the morning. So the out-of-court confession, which was private, was produced by the threat of torture & the in-court one by actual torture. That Gilles was tortured was confirmed by an unlikely source a couple of years later when Charles VII referred to the "attentats" (outrages) he had been subjected to in prison. There is no mention in the trial of sacrifices to the Devil. In one instance body parts were supposedly supplied to Prelati, but without any implication that they were procured especially for ritual purposes. At one point Henriet implies that children were killed purely to stop them talking, which is another motive to add to the mix. The two cousins/accomplices didn't really "vanish without trace". They weren't brought to court, but then nor was former chorister André Buchet, who was implicated & named as a suspect early on in the trial & was known to be a member of Jean V's household. Gilles de Sillé, one of the cousins, certainly never troubles the pages of history again, but why would he? Roger de Bricqueville, the other cousin, didn't disappear at all. He lived in Machecoul with Marie de Rais, Gilles' daughter, & her first husband Prégent de Coëtivy. Marie was especially fond of Bricqueville's daughters. In May 1446 he applied for, & received, a pardon from Charles VII. As for that sword - well! Where did you get that from? There is no record of a blood-dripping sword in any contemporary account, that reads like gothic fiction. If you're carefully disposing of bodies, surely you'd give the murder weapon a quick wipe with a damp rag - certainly when the soldiers came knocking on the door with an arrest warrant, if not before. The only forensic evidence produced was a bloody child's chemise & "suspicious" ashes in the hearth - not in the castle but in a small house occupied by Prelati & Blanchet. There is no record of Gilles ever visiting that house. The sword was, famously, a braquemard. This was a short sword that was associated with commoners & criminals. Gilles would never have used or even owned one, & it is notable that he never uses the word. The attempt to put this vulgar weapon in his hand is one of many prosecution slurs. This is not an attempt to make the case for Gilles de Rais' innocence. It's merely a correction of certain errors in the original comment. If people want to demolish the argument for a stitch-up, really they should familiarise themselves with the details of that argument.

@@morbidmorag wow. I must admit my argument did have flaws in it seeing as most of it was based on emotional biases while I was quite inebriated. I did not imply that Gilles’s cousins disappeared, merely that they were accomplices. And you know it does seem likely that the braquemard was a plant, the blood stains themselves I read about in the 1970s biography of Gilles by an author whose name escapes me at this moment, but that particular author was known to embellish and exaggerate like most historians do. But I’m pretty damn impressed. Most people who comment on this sort of thing pose an inflammatory and idiotic argument but youres was actually articulate and insightful. I guess I probably shouldn’t comment on KZread while drunk right? 😂 but anyway thanks for the comment you’ve really opened my eyes, and I’m almost convinced that Gilles really was framed. But even if he was, you must admit a satanist child killing nobleman is a much more compelling narrative, that’s probably why that version of the story has stuck around as long as it has. But still, bravo. Excellent reply!

@@TurnerGoodrich Aw, thank you. 🙂 Full disclosure: this is my speciality subject. I've blogged on it for 12 years & written a book, so I know more about it than is probably healthy. And you're absolutely right, of course. It's only very recently that proper historians have shown any interest in GdR, & that gave plenty of time for a largely false, but dramatic, narrative to get started. And the fake version is so compelling! But, if you go into it, so is the fit-up. But it's so much easier to go with the satanist-knight-who-rode-with-Joan-of-Arc version, rather than pick the evidence apart & look into the fiendishly complicated politics behind it all. Even the people who agree with me think it was a plot by the Church & the French King, which is as wrong as it gets. Personally, I wouldn't want to live in a world where everybody on internet forums was sober. Where would be the fun?

@@morbidmorag amen to that! Like I said you really opened my eyes to the flaws of my argument, I’m almost scared to comment on any other historical video ever again! Also it’s crazy to think how many stories are taken as historical fact when the historians who recorded those events were often incredibly biased and opinionated instead of being neutral. I’m sure we’d all be surprised if we were able to look into the past and see everything unfold through a neutral lense. Like think about how many monarchs and dictators who were said to be absolutely batshit insane were actually misunderstood or simply perpetrated brutality for the sake of protecting their lands? The wonderful part about living in today’s times is that we can look at things from an objective perspective, but even hundreds or thousands of years on from the events that took place the historians of the time and their records still influence our opinions. It’s pretty damn crazy to think about.
