The Deuce Analysis / Season One Themes (My Name is Ruby)

The Deuce drives home the point that the only constant is change. We see three major winds of change: the sexual revolution, the cleaning up of urban streets paving the way for gentrification, and the rise of the porn industry. We see the winners and losers of that change, including those on the top of the old order, those on the bottom of the old order who fail to get swept up in the change for different reasons.

The Deuce tells the story of the legalization and ensuing rise of the porn industry in New York beginning in the 1970s. Themes explored include the violence of the drug epidemic and the resulting real estate booms and busts that coincided with the change. This is my analysis of the themes of season one, including feminism, masculinity, capitalism, the mob, the mafia, and gentrification. This is also my recap for episode 8: My Name Is Ruby, episode 7 Au Reservoir, episode 6 Why Me?
