The destiny-altering final seconds of Vikings-Cardinals need a deep rewind
Спорт
It’s December 28th, 2003. We’re in Tempe, Arizona for week 17 and the Minnesota Vikings are in control up 5, a clock running under 10 seconds, and this down and distance is not a typo. These hometown Cardinals are in a bad spot, scrambling for a miracle touchdown to win.
One last defensive stop here not only seals today for Minnesota, but delivers them the NFC North crown. If Arizona pulls this off, then the Vikings will watch the rival Packers go to the playoffs in their place. No pressure, Minnesota.
So, to really enjoy what comes next, let’s rewind.

As somone who has no affiliation with either team but this was kinda magical to watch the cardinals win with absolutely nothing to gain other than pride and themselves is something you almost never see
I was 22 and Big Red’s personal body guard. The dude was awesome and loved being on the field and near the action on bigbplays, so, I was there as well. We were behind the goal posts for the final few min. It was freaking SURREAL watching this all unfold from that close. I’ll never forget the chill in the air; the Vikings fans to my left who had been LOUD all game suddenly go silent, and the Cardinals fans to my right go crazy. Big Red jumped on the pile (which can be seen in the broadcast), but I stayed off by about 20ft. Unfortunately since broadcasts were not widescreen back then, I've never been able to catch a glimpse of myself, which looking back, would be fun. Another memory that is ever-lasting is the fact that everyone KNEW McGinnis would be fired (and he was the next day). The post game presser was always broadcast on one of the two Jumbotrons and we were usually out on the field still hanging with kids during that time. McGinnis’ presser was SO emotional because he knew it was his last game as HC, but he was so honored and thrilled to have been given that opportunity. He remains to this day my favorite Cards HC.

I can’t believe this is about to be 20 years old now.
I think this game also changed the “force out” rule. Back then if you caught the ball in the air while in the end zone, it was a TD even if the receiver was pushed out of bounds. Now, the receiver has to have 2 feet touch the end zone for the TD to count. If the modern rule was in effect that day, the Vikings win that game.

You have to like suffering if you want to like the sports teams here. When they get too good they leave, too (see: Lakers, North Stars)
I am a Packers fan, and I was at Lambeau as this game was happening. The Packers were crushing the Broncos, but it looked like it would be for naught. A guy in the row behind us was listening to this game on a portable radio, and giving us updates. When he said "Touchdown Arizona! The Vikings lose!" we all went crazy. You could see as the news travelled through out the stadium, and you saw the Packer players turn around to ask what was happening. The fans told the players, and the players started celebrating. It was an awesome moment.
"Hello? You Play to win the game!" - No one as December 28th 2003.
I was at the Packer game that was being played at the same time as this one. They purposefully did not show the score of the Vikings/Cards game at Lambeau, but many fans were listening to it on the radio in the stands. After this play happened, word started to spread amongst the crowd. A slow roar led to a big roar and since this was between plays the players were wondering what was going on. Suddenly they figured it out and the entire place and entire Packers bench went nuts. One of the better sporting events I've witnessed.

It's an extremely tall order to try and recreate even a sliver of the tension, anticipation, excitement, and suspense of a moment like this. Watching something like this live comes with all the hype of the last 3 hours of game time plus all the history of the season. Trying to convey that same feeling in a 14 minute video is a tall order. Rewinder is one of my favorite sports series on KZread because they pull it off. The writing and narration and the beats they hit to fill in the story before the moment always works to build up that tension again. In 2003 I was part a a program called Play It Smart. Well, a group of us went to Arizona to hang out with another HS team that was a part of the same program. We went to this game in 2003. They were still playing at Sun Devil Stadium.
Back in those days, the Cardinals were so bad that as Arizona residents, we were spared of their terribleness. We instead watched the Packers put a whipping on the Broncos, and the announcers were stunned the Cardinals were still in the game when the score flashed. The television network wisely switched to the end of the game and we got to see the Cardinals playing some actual football. My friend, who is a Cardinals fan, couldn’t believe it. The next week Nate Poole was given VIP treatment for the Packers and got to watch the epic Matt Hasselback gaffe. Sometimes weird stuff has to happen for iconic moments in league history to happen.

@@godkinghell15 Rewatch the play. Poole only gets one foot down in bounds, however the NFL had a short lived rule in affect that if the refs determined that a player would have gotten both feet down had he not been pushed out by the defender, it was ruled a catch.
The game that I always think about is Colts Steelers and the fumble return at the goal line by the Colts, tried to return it for a TD but was caught by Big Ben.
For those who don't know. He did not get two feet inbounds. However, the rules at the time stated something along the lines of; if a defender shoves the receiver out of bounds before he has the chance to get both feet inbounds and the receiver still maintained possession of the ball it would be ruled a catch. I think that rule was changed to 2 feet inbounds regardless of defensive involvement the following off season.
The fact that a play like this had such consequences in the NFL is remarkable to think about. I mean, the Giants drafted Eli thanks to this, and look how they did against Tom Brady when it mattered the most. He could legitimately have had 1-2 more rings by the end of his career if it wasn't for the Vikings choking.

Incredible example of the butterfly effect. The Vikings choking may have prevented the Giants from drafting Eli, which in turn would not have been in position to beat the undefeated Patriots years later. Interestingly, Moss was on both those Vikings and Patriots teams. Therefore the Vikings choking not only prevented them from making the playoffs but may have prevented Moss from getting a ring when he was with the undefeated Patriots.

Arizona has a lot of snowbirds, so there are many families/connections to the Midwest. It was a strangely hyped up game locally due to that. Most regular season games would have attendance between 20-30k without a big draw. The early season Packers game was 58k, mid season 49ers game (close-ish rivals) 40k, the Vikings game at the end of the year was 53k. Poole got a key to the city of Green Bay. McCown said he would get Christmas cards from Packer fans every year. Cardinals made a decent turn-around the next year under Green, and drafted Fitz. It was also around this time that Bill Bidwell's sons were able to make some in-roads on business decisions within the organization, after Ferguson and Wilson left as executives. Beating the Packers and Vikings at home in a 4-win season... Priceless.
Need the Paul Allen call for this. “Caught! Touchdown! Noooooooooooooo!!!”

As a born-and-bred Minnesotan, I've come to terms with the fact that the Vikings are just that character in a TV show that is always "so close" to having it all but has everything blow up in their face. I now only watch for those moments when the wheels inevitably fall off. Oh, we're 8-1? In line for a potential first round bye? Don't worry. It's coming. It always does...
Beautiful.
I need a video entitled any given doink. And you review the history of doinks, and the probability of them going in or out, and the results of those rarest occasions of the double doink. Has there been a triple doing? I need to know. Love you channel. Keep it up!
The last time the force out rule was ever allowed!!!!
I'll never forget earlier in that GW drive, Chris Myers asked his color commentator, "Do the Vikings have a championship-caliber defense?" And the color guy replied, "Sometimes the best defense is a good offense" If that wasn't an omen of how this game was going to end, I don't know what else it would have been.
Great video but we needed Paul Allen's call of the play. It's epic and I enjoy it a lot as a Packer fan!
This is hysterical on so many levels.
I was expecting you to mention the force out rule, that was later removed because of this play. The receiver caught the ball in the air, but the defender pushed him out of bounds before his feet touched. The ref called it a force out, which was non reviewable. The rule was removed in 07 or 08
Sure they missed out on Eli, but they ended up with Larry Fitzgerald because of this play. Really not terrible, if you think about it that way.
