A Packers' meltdown, a Seahawks' improbable comeback, it all needs a deep rewind

Спорт

99.3% out of a hundred is about as close to certainty as you can possibly get. That was the win probability percentage that Pro-Football-Reference.com projected for the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter of the 2014 NFC Championship against the Seattle Seahawks. Leading by two scores with less than five minutes remaining, Green Bay certainly looked like they were heading to the Super Bowl. The thing about football though, is that nothing is ever guaranteed until the clock hits triple zeros.
So while Green Bay was very close to advancing to the big game, they ended up finding themselves with their back against the ropes in overtime. I could tell you exactly what led to the Seahawks’ miraculous comeback but what’s the fun in that? To truly understand the magnitude of this moment, you have to know the strange history between these two teams, how a quarterback who was doubted before entering the league is in a position to lead his team to back-to-back Super Bowls, and how an undrafted free agent became a Seattle hero. To do all of that, we gotta rewind.

    I still think about this game all the time. IMO it's Pete Carroll's greatest game as an NFL coach. He and the Hawks threw everything they could at a Packers team that just...refused to step on the gas. 4 red zones, no TDs. Meanwhile the Seahawks pulled off a great fake and made some great late plays. The perfect game for why you play aggressive and damn the downs odds

    Those are the only two games in the playoffs where he cost them a chance to win a title after his defense played decently (though this game they shat the bed at the end, that game they played well all the way through). At least in this game he managed to rally the Packers to a game tying field goal to try and salvage the situation partially, in the 49ers game at home he had Lazard open, and if he hits him Lazard more than likely gets a ton of yardage and maybe into FG range to win the game for Green Bay - but of course he made a bad choice and directly cost his team the game. Anyhow, every other game the team had no chance, or they got destroyed.

    An interesting video could be on the 2017 Detroit Lions, week 3, against Atlanta. The Lions got a TD to win the game with 8 seconds left, but it was automatically reviewed. The refs overturned their call, AND because of the review, there was a ten second runoff, and the game was over. The season ended with the Lions having a 9-7 record and missed the playoffs with Atlanta taking the last slot with a 10-6 record. Because the Lions missed the playoffs, Jim Caldwell was fired for Matt Patricia who turned the Lions into losers again. Pretty much all because of that one play.

I HATE taking this avenue, but the amount of times that official bad calls/no calls have directly decided games against us is outrageous. And in many cases, it leads to some ridiculous last minute play that is all anyone remembers. Refs missed a clear delay of game on Baltimore this year, but nobody will ever acknowledge that because they will only be talking about Justin Tucker's (admittedly impressive) 66-yard record field goal. I have to watch a replay of that ****ing "Monday Night Miracle" hail mary from Rodgers every single time the Packers play at Ford Field, but nobody remembers the phantom face mask call (replays clearly show that the defender never touched Rodgers facemask) that gave him another shot after he missed the first one. Even when it became 19-14, I knew Seattle still had a chance even if they didn't recover the onside kick. I think they still had 2 timeouts and the 2 minute warning, so that scenario wasn't impossible. As Rich Eisen pointed out on the highlights, Seattle was unfathomably going to score too QUICKLY! That was true, since GB was able to get a tying field goal.

    I was at my staff holiday party that night, stressing out in front of a bowling alley bar TV as the fourth quarter ticked away. The bartender was a gloating Packers fan, and I was the only one in the bar, sitting alone with my Seahawks gear on. As soon as that final INT was made, I got texts from friends and family telling me, sorry kid, better luck next season. And I thought, no, it's not over. I mean, WHO takes a knee with over 5 minutes still left in regulation?? Sure, their QB is Aaron Rodgers, but you play down the clock, and try to get as many yards as possible. You don't slide down to the turf and start celebrating your victory prematurely. I went on to witness the greatest playoff comeback to that date. That onside kick was so improbable, and yet the execution was perfect. The two point conversion/ desperation pass would never have worked in another game, and that day it did. And meanwhile, the bar starts getting busier and louder with coworkers, who have no skin in the game, coming to cheer on the Seahawks. The bartender, unsurprisingly, disappeared right before overtime started, and I knew that when Seattle won the toss that they would win it all. All this being said, it's a shame that the rules for the NFL don't allow for the team that didn't win the toss to have a chance at possession in OT. Imagine a game where Rodgers responds in kind with a Hail Mary pass of his own to tie the game again. Or where the LOB clinches the win for their team in due fashion. That's great television and great for the sport! It was a dramatic walk-off win for Seattle, and it's still one of the most exhilarating games I've witnessed, but for a win to be based off a lucky coin flip when skill and timing have gotten them this far, especially where the outcome determines which franchise goes on to play for a Super Bowl title, it seems to be robbing the players and the fans of a fair finish. Yeah, the defense needs to establish itself if they want the win, but it's only one team called upon to do that unless both teams get possession. When the winner of the coin toss gets first possession of OT, their likelihood of winning the game is above 90%. That is hardly a level playing field, and that's what they need to change next season.

  • @johnchedsey1306

    @johnchedsey1306

    Speaking of OT rules, I have an idea that avoids the coin toss issue. If a playoff game goes into OT, regard the transition between 4th & OT the same way you do from 3rd to 4th quarter. ie, If a team has the ball on their 30 and it's 3 and 10, they start the "5th quarter" with that down and distance and just continue on. If you end the 4th with tying field goal, you kick off, which would have had the Chefs kicking off to the Bills the other night. Basically, rather than start "a new game", continue into the OT period where the game left off. It would create some new strategies on how to deal with that scenario.

    As a seahawks fan this was the most insane experience ever. Felt like the memory of it is somewhat tainted knowing how we lost in the super bowl tho

    As a packers fan, if y’all would’ve won the superbowl, it would’ve been one of the greatest runs ever if not ever. But oh well, that’s football, heartbreaking for both our fanbases knowing we haven’t reached the superbowl or tasted glory from that time onward even till this day, both our fanbases are still waiting. It’s sad but at least y’all had one of the greatest comebacks in nfl history. Us? We live with some of the greatest games ever in the playoffs but always end it in humiliating and embarrassing fashion. Damn I need a drink now 😅

    Not the first and definitely not the last packers playoff collapse

    It seems like the Packers always seem to lose in the playoffs due to their special teams. Tom Grossi is probably going through painful memories while watching this video.

    2014 was my favorite nfl seasons I’ve watched as a fan. I just remember so many awesome moments from the regular season and the playoffs we’re epic. Feels like we have a chance at another epic finish like that this year if the last 2 rounds go well
