A common problem with the Attack on Titan fandom is criticizing characters for not doing the "correct" thing in positions where so many emotions are at play. It's the end of the world people, these human beings are not robots. Connie, Mikasa, Hange, etc. They're not going to act on logic 100% of the time. Such a bizarre criticism. Anyways Zeke is well-written and I think he's great.

The most fascinating part of this aspect of the show, to me, is that Zeke could've won. He could've had everything, with total ease. He was there with the Founding Titan's power and all the time in the world before Eren got there. And yet, for seemingly no reason in particular, he chose to wait for Eren to get there and be tested. Is this because Zeke is really just a fool? Because he was just too cocky? No. It's because in reality, "saving the world" never meant nearly as much to Zeke as having someone to reassure him that he was doing good.

Wow, so well said. This just reminded me of all the other characters who play out this theme. Reiner claimed to participate in the attack on paradis to save the world but his true motivation was to find validation and respect among his peers and his Marleyan father. When Eren met him underground he expresses this and Eren recognizes they are the same, as Eren was always more concerned with attaining his own freedom over restoring Eldia. Just an incredible story that gets better every time you think about it.

This what made feel for Zeke's human side. His longing for familiar love was a resulted of the terrible upbringing from Grisha. I truly believed that Zeke cared about Eren, he didn't want for him to suffer and alone like he did. But as you mentioned, that love while geniune, it also a projection to don't feel no longer lonely.

Unfortunately, for Zeke there were two things preventing him from "bonding" with Eren (besides his plan of course). 1.) Eren, of course, hates his guts; always have, always will. 2.) By the time of their second meeting, and Zeke starts to make his move or both bonding with him and pushing toward his main goal, Eren had already started HIS plan, and had decided to keep everyone close, or wanted to get close him, at a distance, then, when the time comes, push them all AWAY. And just when it appears both are in reach of their opposing goals (via the Rumbling), Zeke picks THAT TIME to try and give closer to his brother and bond with him for real. Ironically. Armin and Mikasa, having become so worried about his behavior, are trying to talk to Eren and stay close to him. But unfortunately for all of them, Eren, now able to grasp his goal, sees any attempt of concern for, affection, and even any type of communication with him as an distraction. He is so committed to his plan that, in order to stay focused on it, he pushes everyone away as far as he possibly can. Even the memories of those he lost that were close to him, he pushes all of that far, far, to the back. So just when Zeke tries to get close to him, and then tries to "save" him, Eren was letting him know, and every else know, don't try to save him, don't try to talk to him, and don't try to get close to him, just go away. And Zeke is the only characters to see, or try to see, something similar between them and Eren (Armin, Reiner, etc., even Jean to some small extent). And there are some things Eren have/had in common with other characters, but also way too many differences too. But just like Armin was initially too blind to those difference due to being his brother, and was like a brother to him, Zeke never could see them, both due to what's mentioned in the video, and because he tried so hard to be his big brother, since he was now the only family he had left in the world, and his last chance for "familiar bonds." Meanwhile, others (like Jean and the series' suicidal punching bag Reiner) would see some of those difference and get terrified. What worse with Zeke is almost everyone used (ironic since he tried to use everyone else). The one person he was close to, and all those he wanted to be close to, all used him. His parents, his grandparents, his "adapted father," and in the end his younger brother. (And of course Marley and Paradis just wanted to use him too, just like he wanted to use all of them.) He wanted a relationship full of love, but mostly get relationship full of using.

@@wanna-be-thinker2377 You got it except Eren didn't hate Zeke. Zeke got the healing for his daddy issues ONLY because Eren allowed Grisha to see Zeke. He dragged Zeke and his daddy issues after Zeke kept him trapped on a YEARS long paths trip insisting Eren was brainwashed. Eren dragging Zeke is ironically younger sibling behavior to a condescending older sibling. That's the funny part. My opinion is that Eren pitied Zeke, then grew very annoyed with his condescension during paths, and still gave him back the thing needed to heal Zeke's inner child.

  • @NaturalHypertrophy

I had entirely forgotten the scene in the manga during which Grisha hugs Zeke, but seeing it animated made me realize its importance: all he wanted was to be loved by his father, the true motives behind his genocidal ideation taking roots in the generational trauma he experienced as a kid that he then projected onto humanity as a whole. Because he had suffered as a child, he decided that ending the Eldian line would prevent people everywhere from experiencing a similar type of pain. If Existence = Pain, then the only way to ease suffering is to erase the concept of Existence itself.

Zeke, ever since his backstory was revealed, has struck me as three things: lonely, and broken beyond the point of no return, yet incredibly kind. Desperately looking for his father’s love while pleasing everyone, such as his grandparents, and essentially yearning for the Euthanisation plan out of a kindness that has been twisted by trauma and hate. He is, without a doubt, one of AoT’s most tragic characters: this is what discrimination and abuse create at the end of the day. People so fundamentally broken they think death is salvation.

Alas there's very few prominent characters in this series who haven't done horrible shit to others either directly or indirectly for reasons they saw as right, or at least been accomplices to it. Such is the nature of the horrible bloody world of AOT. Its kind of fun watching people go loopy trying to apply morality to the actions of these characters in either defense or criticism of them. To justify or to vilify seems to usually be the main objective of viewers, its rare to see people just take characters for what they are in the bigger picture with neutrality since that's not really how our minds work.

Ksaver told Zeke that his parents never loved him. But again, that has been proven wrong when Grisha hugs Zeke and says, "I love you" Not "I have always loved you", because while I think Grisha at least had some care for Zeke, his love for Zeke was not shown, but just a simple "I love you". And man, I love that hug scene. Grisha clings on to Zeke begging for forgiveness for being a horrible father to Zeke, but accepting forgiveness seems to be too late so Zeke can't return the hug. But just the gesture while accepting the fact that his father had changed forms tears in Zeke's eyes as he calls Grisha "Father" for possibly the last time.

Zeke is such a great character, he's really grown on me over time! I never related with his motivation and his goal. Pretty much on Eren's side regarding that. But the anime has really made me emphasize more with Zeke as a character. He's a great contrast to Eren, representing the complete opposite. Zeke pretty much embodies the theme of nihilism, where as Eren is about having a birth-right. Manga spoiler below: Armin's speech to Zeke also encapsulates what Zeke was missing. Always looking for a way to end things, rather than how to move forward. In that sense Eren and Armin are very alike. Still hoping for an Armin video one day! Maybe when his speech has been animated. He's a top 3 character imo, a lot of people underestimate his importance.

Zeke quickly became my favorite character in the series, and one of my favorite ever during the final season of AoT. His dedication to his goal, despite his loneliness and constant rejections from his blood relations, just makes him so compelling a character and antagonist. He's almost always calm even when doing heinous things, and some would wrongly call him heartless for this, but the truth is that he cares for others deeply. He just has rationalized his actions, even those that harm those he cares for, as necessary for his plans to come to fruition. He reminds me a lot of my favorite character in fiction : Stannis Baratheon. Both lonely men desperate for recognition/affection from their blood relations, who motives are strongly influenced by the scars their family have left on them, that have set their hearts on fire in pursuit of a purpose to their existence. Both are also viewed as a savior figure by some, and both' of them have their closest relation as an older man they can confide in. Then you mix in the existential aspect that reminds me of Seymour Guado from FFX, with wanting to end the cycle by ending further life, and you have one of the best antagonists in all of anime.

It is interesting when looking at some of the characters with such things (Zeke, Eren, Reiner, Jean, Mikasa, Arnin, etc.). I remember someone else video mentioning this: Some will look at the past and only that. Some, like Eren, will only see and look to the future. Some, like Armin, will look to, or at least acknowledge, the present. And some will look at the past, present and future, and think some of the others are idiots for only looking at one of them.

I believe that zeke’s greatest flaw was that he could never fathom people changing thus springing his euthanasia plan along with its failure. He couldn’t comprehend his farther changing his ways in how he would raise a child which of course was why he was surprised at how contrasting Eren is to him leading to a miscalculation and the failure of his plan. The euthanasia plan was birthed with the same ideology, the Elidans would always cause suffering to others and people would always have their prejudices towards them prolonging their suffering so why not end the cycle? Yet this was only truly a cycle in zeke’s eyes as in reality shown through the characters that were captured that grew to love eldians for example the cook. If Zeke had realised this sooner I wonder how things would of turned out

I think Eren manipulated Grisha like a puppet to tell Zeke what he wanted to hear, and he also deliberately did not show love to Zeke himself because he needs Zeke to defeat him to stop the Rumbling, so for the same reason that he made enemies out of the Survey Corps, he was trying to make an enemy out of Zeke too.

What I like about AOT, its all about perspective. Though Zeke has been introduced as the merciless man who murdered Paradise habitants without mercy through his titan form, yet he is the Beast Titan which is irony. Yet, he is one of the characters who really had a sad background. His background story shows us that we do not choose our family but we choose who we become. And also how parents can positively or negatively impact their child's path
