Easily my favorite moment in AoT, ever since I saw the first season over 7 years ago, I’ve hoped that this series wasn’t fantasy or science fiction that’s not based in real world science. I’m a biological science major and the first panel made my face light up. Then the philosophy between Armin and Zeke spoke to me so incredibly much, I highly recommend everyone watch a KZread video called “Optimistic Nihilism” it captures what I’m saying, plus it’s my philosophy. This makes me want to grab lunch with hajime Isuyama and just talk w him

Optimistic Nihilism isn't a true philosophy lmao, Optimistic is how YOU feel about it, not what the philosophical views of the theory are. Optimistic Nihilism is just Existential Nihilism with a happy little youtube name so that people like you can have claim to have faced that spooooky abyss of nothing mattering and say youre optimistic. Existential Nihilism is inherently flawed regardless, since if there is no fundamental truth or value in universe, that would become the fundamental truth. Just another edgy philosophy. I totally understand what you say, but no to me ppl are complex and have complex thoughts. They’re rarely narrow minded, and the more smart someone is, the more likely he is to think about all perspectives and ways of thinking even before discussing it with someone. Zeke knows nothing makes sense, but does that mean he can’t appreciate any moment in life ? After consideration this is not that weird. But then 2 points : 1. Zeke is not sure if there’s a possibility to get away from "here" (paths) when asked by Armin. 2. He just had a speech about how life is driven by fear of death, it might just describe his actual state before giving his head to Levi. That’s not a stupid observation from you - at all. I remember thinking about it, and putting myself instead of Zeke’s mind : If the rumbling began and lives were taken - after all - it may be better to let this craziness of Eren finish and maybe the world will be a better place after this. Like imagine yourself in this position, it's just as Annie was saying before making the plane fly. If they stop now it would be worse for everyone. (What Im saying is so horrible, but I think we might get why I say this)

The biggest error in human reasoning is the assumption that our existence has some ultimate purpose. Forget the assumptions that you've been instilled with for a moment and examine nature. Observe the mechanics of reality and you'll notice that everything in existence is part of an ongoing series of physical processes. Chemical reactions are occurring constantly around us, molecular bonds are formed and broken, and energy is transferred between compounds through different mechanisms, facilitating these reactions and giving rise to change as particles move through the fabric of reality and rearrange themselves into different configurations. The universe is like a machine, and the driving force of all processws carried out by this machine is entropy. There is, seemingly, a finite amount of matter and energy in the universe, at least in what we can observe. At one point the universe existed as a singularity, with all energy being distributed evenly across space and time. In fact, space and time didn't even exist yet, because the universe is relative. In order for space and time to have any meaning, there has to be differences in the structure of space-time, there has to be differences between things for change to occur in the first place. If you have no differences, then there is no change and therefore there is no time or space in which a progression of time takes place. It was a universe that was constant in temperature and density, where ALL energy was distributed evenly. The only thing that existed was the fabric of space-time itself, but without any fluctuations there is no space or time, so it's like an empty field of nothingness, or as close to nothingness as is possible, because in reality there is always SOMETHING, and that is how the universe came to be. A quantum fluctuation, the first difference in the universe, was the foundation for reality, and from this quantum fluctuation all energy in the universe spread out from a single point and immediately started undergoing rearrangement. In this dense cosmic ball of energy variations in density and temperature caused the density of some points to rapidly decrease due to dark energy, a kind of negative energy which rapidly expanded space and gave rise to vacuums of low density, and along with the negative energy of gravity, it separated the forms of positive energy in matter into discrete pockets which spread out and became compact into smaller and relatively denser regions thanks to the influence of gravity which pushed matter towards areas of higher curvature and dark energy which spread this matter out and pushed it all away from itself. The first structures to form from the interacting quantum fluctuations were the four fundamental forces, starting with gravity, then electromagnetism, then the strong and weak nuclear force. These forces came into existence alongside quantum fields, which gave rise to particles as a consequence of the interactions between quantum fluctuations whose interacting wave functions created constructive and destructive interference with each other, resulting in the excitation of these fields through the four fundamental forces, whose interaction was carried by distinct boson particles that are themselves excitations in quantum fields which then transfer energy to other corresponding fields born from the interacting quantum fluctuations, resulting in new particles that form the foundation for reality. So you essentially have 17 different particles (each an excitation in a quantum field) which follow 4 rules of nature, divided into three categories: bosons, leptons, and quarks. The bosons carry the forces, or excitations, that create the stable arrangement of quantum excitations we know of as matter, made of up quarks and leptons. The quarks bind into hadrons, like protons and neutrons, under the strong nuclear force carried by gluons. The hadrons, which also communicate through the electromagnetic force via photons, then binds oppositely charged electrons and forms atoms, and it is in the configuration of stable quantum excitations that the potential energy of matter is stored and converted into other forms of energy which can do useful work to change the properties of other structures by reconfigurating them through constant interactions and reactions, carrying on an constant chain of reactions that constantly exchanges energy and gives rise to new configurations one after the other in a sequence of cause and effect. The matter of the universe is always trying to reach a more stable state by reaching the next available lowest energy state, but in order to do this the configuration of energy has to change in response to the states of the particles around it, and thus nature carries out a prolonged, almost puzzle like process which energy is going through different physical pathways in order to reach the next most stable state. All things in the universe thus follow the path of least resistance, trying to distribute more and more energy until it reaches a point of maximum energy. But the universe doesn't do this with a purpose, it just HAS to do it because that's what energy does - it goes from high energy, unstable configurations to low energy, stable configurations, but it has to go through the existing pathways first to reach this point, so while some areas experience decreases in entropy, the net entropy of the universe is always increasing. However, it is for this reason that the structures that last the longest and are the most stable are, ironically, the ones that create the most resistance to energy in reaching a lower, more stable configuration. That is to say, the structures which most efficiently trap and disperse energy at the slowest rate by minimizing the pathways for the escape of energy, tend to be the ones that survive, and you can see this everywhere in nature. The reason atoms survived is because the most effectively trapped energy into the most stable low energy configurations which created the most resistance for entropy and therefore minimized the pathways that energy could disperse through. By this point a huge proportion of the universe's energy had been lost to other processes already, so then when gravity became the dominant force and created pressure underwhich nuclear fusion happened, so then it was a process of trial and error between which stellar units could conserve energy the longest, and it's a process that is still ongoing, but the winner is obviously going to be red dwarfs. They make up 70% of all stars in the universe and have the longest life span of all the main sequence stars, living for around 10 trillion years. Meanwhile, stars like our sun, yellow dwarfs, make up about 7% of all stars and only live for about 10 billion years. We couldn't survive around any other kind of star, though. Red dwarf stars live so long because they're small and therefore exert less pressure on their cores and therefore burn through their nuclear fuel more slowly, the consequence being that they emit far less heat. The Earth could never sustain liquid water around a red dwarf star, but any star more massive than ours would be too hot to sustain liquid water. So life evolved in a kind of intermediary zone in which chemical reactions could take place in a stable solvent like water at a relatively constant volume and temperature, and was in the midst of these ongoing chemical reactions that new configurations of self-replicating molecular chains like RNA formed and gave rise to single celled life. Just like all other things in the universe, it went through a process of trial and error as well, and the systems which gave rise to self-replicating reactions and most efficiently captured and utilized energy to do useful work tended to be the systems that survived, and as they diversified they underwent adaptations in response to their environment, and the changes that facilitated the evolutionary process the best were the ones that survived. This is the origins of life that Zeke spoke of. This is how life came into existence, and the universe is not cruel with any reason, it is merely incidental. The universe is indifferent to us, but the experience of suffering is itself an evolutionary adaptation that encouraged life to seek out conditions that were less hostile and more favorable towards our survival and reproduction. As for death, it is both an inevitable physical consequence of entropy, as living organisms are machines and they break down as they encounter various conditions, but it is also a programmed adaptation, as life evolved to make use of the inevitable outcome of death by developing preset lifespans to help accomodate new generations of life and avoid hindering the evolutionary process that would occur if outdated iterations of an organism that were less adapted to their environment diverted resources away from the next generation for too long.

So what are we to make of this? I think the main take away should be that the experience of reality that we possess as living beings is not so much a perfect reflection of reality or an uninterrupted essence of self directly interacting with nature, but rather it's a kind of heuristic, a sort of mental simulation our brains run by indirectly acquiring information through sensory organs that transfers physical interactions into interchangeable but distinct sequences of information that it then parses through and arranges into a model of the environment which it uses as a basis for the inputs of developing goal oriented tasks and then outputs decisions through planning, reasoning, and judgments of the information it has available. As I said, though, it is an indirect process, and not only does our brain lack a lot of information and ignore many variables when processing it into a coherent picture of reality, but our brains also developed several ways of reasoning and thinking about our environment that don't accurately reflect reality but which persisted in spite of this fact because it encouraged survival and reproduction. What we experience as reality is, in fact, an illusion of our brains. What we experience represents a kind of small, vague, blurry slice of reality, but what is actually happening is far, far more complex and intricate than what we experience. In fact, what we experience is more like small story in a vast machine with dimensions we have no means of perceiving. Our existence is an illusion born of the mechanisms of this machine, but the nature of our existence as reasoning, adapting structures creates a unique opportunity. We can continue learning about this process and wade through the obscuring veil of perception, while at the same time embracing the illusion and taking joy in the magnitude and diversity of experiences offered by this machine of unimaginable order. To live and discover all the truths of reality, in a universe of complete meaninglessness and indifference, is the greatest act of defiance that living beings can do. In a universe without meaning, there is a vacuum in which we can supplement our own meaning. We can create meaning in a universe without it.

Maybe. It is a bit existentially terrifying when you realize that reality is just a product of brute force, just constant trial and error all trying to reach greater stability, but when you consider the implications of this fact, I think there is immense awe in it. It not only explains the phenomenon we observe in nature, but it gives us a clearer vision of the future and the limits of the possible. For the first time in human history, we have a distinct understanding of what is and is not possible, and we have the tools to execute new possible configurations. We may have shattered the delusions of the past which our ancestors obediently passed onto us, but in its place we have the technology to solve problems and provide new experiences we never could have imagined before. There is a path before us that we can take if enough of us push and prod society in the direction of that path, and it is one of profound complexity, one where the very definition of what it means to be human and the limits of experience will be bent. If we are unified in our curiosity, we may see amazing things.
