The Design of Thumper
Ойындар
Brian Gibson & Marc Flury are the team responsible for the hellish act of rhythm violence known as Thumper. In this Noclip Session, we speak to the duo about their time working on Rock Band, the emotive power of music and how they orchestrated a new form of rhythm game. (Thumper on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/356...)

In case you missed the news we just flew back from 2 weeks of filming around the world and are [among other things] hard at work on a special series celebrating the ten-year anniversary of The Witcher franchise. More news on that soon. We also turn 1 year old on September 12th! It's hard to believe all that's happened in those 12 months. Thank you so much for your continued support.

Please, subtitles, please don't forget the subtitles; those are really important because of my hard hearing. And several videos on your channel don't have it. Apologies for my english, is not my mother language. Salutations.

Thanks for the message. Since KZread removed its CC marketplace we've had trouble getting captions up at the same time as the publish rime. Right now Noclip Sessions are the only content of ours that don't all have CC. We're working to fix this this month.

Like, yeah. Ya gotta.
One of my favorite games, made by someone from one of my favorite bands, on one of my favorite channels, started by one of my favorite (former) coworkers. I don't think I could possibly enjoy this more.
Thank you for this Danny. Thumper was one of my absolute favourite games of last year and, perhaps weirdly, captured the experience (for me anyway) of playing live music better than any Guitar Hero or Rock Band game ever could.
What?!?!?! This is the bassist from Lightning Bolt?!?!?! That's so rad.
Always been a fan of Brian Gibson. Chatted with him for a bit outside the Smell when they played there and was super genuine. Always love to support my guy on all his projects, and Thumper is such a masterpiece.
Remember seeing Thumper on gameinformer's youtube channel for the first time last year around E3, had no idea what it was, but I clicked the video and I got goosebumps listening to those beats. After that I I frequently thought about it, got it day one on PS4. Fantastic game and one of my favorite indie titles.
I don't generally play rhythm games or music games since I have very little sense or rhythm or interest in those lane-jumping mechanics but Thumper is an exception. *_RHYTHM VIOLENCE_*
anyone else notice the weird time signatures in the game?
@justinw1384

Yes but I'm a drummer. I feel like most people don't notice time signatures :-)
@Indecency562
6 жыл бұрын
The level numbers of the indicate the time signature you'll be playing in through that level, i.e. Level 5 = 5/8 time, Level 6 = 6/8 time, Level 7 = 7/8 time... (excepting Level 1 & 2, as far as I'm aware...) I love that so much about the game though! I've never found a rhythm game that focuses so much on the irregular time signatures as well as Thumper does. I never really understood how 5/8 or 7/8 time could 'feel' good until I overcame those levels. The game helped me grow as a composer!
@vicez_

I don't remember seeing a clip of the game in this video that wasn't 4/4, can you reply with the time in the vid with an irregular time signature? Or are you just talking about the game in general, not exclusively this video?

Danny, you never cease to amaze with who you line up for these interviews. Brian and Marc made 2016's best indie game, IMO. Thumper is a masterpiece. Love to hear these guys elaborate on how it was conceived.

Thumper gives me legit anxiety. It's an amazing game but holy cow...tough, real tough.
Danny, I just love these Sessions videos. Thanks so much for doing them.
god im so glad you guys covered this game
that final level 9 boss is kicking my ass but i keep coming back to this game, so well made.
Utterly adore Thumper and Lightning Bolt. Cool interview
Good work as always!
Thumper! I loved Thumper! ...Not the best contribution to a comment section, I know, but just in case these guys stop in to read the comments, I loved the game! Felt SO good to beat it.

Thumper is such a work of art! I hope that they work on a sequel, or that someone else pushes their ideas further.
Playing Thumper in PSVR is a totally different experience. I'm new to it but damn man, I think you guys kind've cracked the code of me being really interested like 'I need more' and at the same time myself being like 'Whoa, that shit was scary.' :D
Holy shit is that Bryan Gibson from Lightning Bolt? I had no idea he was even involved in games. Such a fucking cool bass player.
Getting ready to buy it for Switch soon Game looks like a trip
Best rhythm game ever made. Nothing compares to it, its in a league of its own and possibly ahead of its time.
I played this game last week, what an amazing experience, it's something that you'll remember forever because it's so unique and different.
Whaaaat the guy that made thumper is the guy in lightning bolt? That dude is an absolute legend.
That was unexpected... One of my favourite games on the Switch. Thank you Danny O'Dwyer

I really wished they showed level 5 in this video. To me, that stage really shows what Thumper is about.
I only discovered this game this year (2021.) I am so glad I did. It’s difficult, but in a good way.
Hey I didn't know my favorite bass boy made this game. Just played. I LOVE IT SOO DANG MUCH of course !! :):):)

I would also love to see an inside look into noclip ITSELF. It is very interesting to be how it all works. For example: These two lovely people did not just fly over (one from Korea even) just to chat for about 20min right? They must have been payed accordingly as well as their flights. Is that the power of 4K Patrions? So with that patrion money noclip is able to pay flights and time for the people they interview? Thats very interesting. I dont think any other youtuber catering to this industry has this power.
What is the music used in the intro and outro of this video? I really like the vibe of it.
Very gratifying game 👌🏼
I never noticed the pincers on the beatle until now.
What was the music used in that doc? It was awesome. It would be cool if you credit music in the description

What is the song used in the intro/outro to this video?
Oh I wish we could see some old version and prototype material! Good clip, nonetheless :)

Honestly Thumper is a "What it feels like to get lost in a song at play it through all the way perfectly" simulator.

I can't say I enjoyed what I played of this game. Not that it's bad. It just never clicked for me. It's a very slick game, and it's cool to watch though.
Haha McFlurry
oh god his nails
Not a game about rabbits, moving on.
This game was too hardcore for me and ended up being a disappointment (not a bad game in any way). Difficulty spike is steep and the time commitment to finish a stage in one go is big. Was incredibly hyped but the repetition and the feeling i'm bashing my head against the wall to finish a section stopped me from continuing.

Alex Landry yeah it can get intimidating. I've S ranked all the stages up to level 5 and it is getting seriously difficult but I like that it is a game about the flow - once you're on it it feels totally natural, once you're off though it feels equally alien.
So the games's "Audiosurf"?

Why doesn't Harmonix own this game? Most companies make you sign an NDA that includes a clause that grants them the right to any IP you come up with related to your work.

Am I the only one who thinks that the microphones aren't that great?
Yo what's wrong with the guy on the left
I played the first third of it (three worlds out of nine) and then received a refund. The inputs it prompts you for rarely exhibit any consistent sense of musical rhythm; and I found there was not enough notice for many prompts, which made failure frustrating rather than success fair or rewarding. It's also got a very harsh, repetitive, constantly noisy soundscape, which removed from the sense of music even further, and only served to ensure a headache.

Hunter Short each world is designed with a time signature in mind. World 1 in 1/4 world 2 in 2/4 ect. And there are sound ques that tell you what's coming up. It doesn't give you much time till the notes come up but it's there. I understand your distaste for it but I just wanted these points to be mentioned for people reading.

It's hard to pick one. Here is a list of a few music based games. DDR, Maimai, Osu!, Super Hexagon, Electronic Super Joy and crypt of the necrodancer. Audiosurfer 2 is in my opinion also better executed even if I don't personally enjoy it as much as some people do.

I personally don't put these games under the same type. I get something different from those games. I see that you compare them because they are based on music. But that is a big abstraction imo.
