I am more than stunned by this dedication and super modern craftsmanship. I am now a very old man and during my life I have watched and appreciated all type of workmanship starting with my own family which is related to the woodworking skills required to make traditional wooden boats with frames and planking, etc. I graduated in electronics and computer and so I know about the algorithms and mathematical transformation one needs to ensure that the programme in the computer is transferred to the three dimensional printers and my own brother modified all the machine in his workshop to be used in conjunction with the computations as used in 3-D printing, including using metal deposition with a welding head. I lived through an era when I just cannot believe what I went through, including error correction codes and image processes and now drones and 5200 of them can be flown with an algorithm that no set of top human pilots can ever achieve, It is wonderful to see that engineering is used b y people to achieve these stunning results and not only those majority of people who have not got the slightest idea what is an engineer and the stunning products that may be achieved by intelligent people as this gentleman shown in this video. Prosit,

Thank you so much for making this video. I was able to design my own escapement from scratch with a varied design based on this video based on Abbey Clock's work. Very helpful! My design keeps time for about ten seconds then stops. I modified the wheel and notch on the fly because of time and that is why my clock is suffering. Hopefully I will redesign another one soon. I also used an aluminum wire for the hairspring... Also suffering. Buuuut hopefully I expect to get some nylon filament for a stronger spring and hopefully that will make the movement more functional. My next steps are to design a barrel spring based escapement. Thanks again for doing what you do!

Really gorgeous work. Wonder if one could make a prototype without the use of 3D printing. 🤔

This looks great! I do have one question, how does the balance wheel switch directions? I want to make one of my own and can't figure out how it works. Thanks in advance!

I found that the spring was not stiff enough. It wouldn't return the balance wheel to the center position. I made a new version with a cross section of 2mmx1mm (the original was 2mmx0.2mm) and this seemed to work better.

Nice! Horology takes a lot of tries to get it right I came a cross you blog, nice comments about your experiences. Friction and even more importantly adhesion, since a clock goes and stops so many times is a show stopper I have fond that PLA + works well, I used eSUN Pla +, very strong, maybe harder than PLA so possibly less friction

use PEI spring steel sheet. Sticks really good. Maybe increase bed temp. I start 1st layer 80 then 60

Very nice. I am curious about the longevity of the printed spring. There are a few other printed spring clock designs, but most seem to have really short runtimes. Your run time should be long enough to build a clock that can be expected to run continuously for months or years. I really like the watch style winding and time setting knob.

That depends on the material. A PLA mainspring would lose tension quite quickly, but a PETG one, despite being weaker, wouldn't lose tension.

  • @PeterLunk

This is not the wind-up-power-spring. The power comes from pulling the string or putting a weight on there. The runtime would be determined by the gearing you add inbetween the powersource and then escapement wheel. ;)

@@PeterLunk My concern is about the useful life of a printed spring. PLA seems to get brittle after a few months. Old rolls will often snap as they are unwound from a nearly empty spool. TheGoofy's clock also uses a printed spring and the design has been around for several years. There is probably some data out there regarding narrow strips of PLA with continuous flexing.

@@stevesclocks PLA is very rigid, but it also creeps at lower temperatures than PETG or ABS, so it makes for poor springs. PETG can't apply as much force in the same geometry, but it will stay consistent over time.
