I had absolutely zero idea how much I wanted a series like this. Between this one, and the potential series that Tommy started with the history of Catch Wrestling, I find myself unbelievably excited for what comes next. Hey Casuals.... Congrats on learning a little about The History of MMA. Now you can try and pretend like you don't live in your mother's Basement and actually did something with your life. Sheesh......So Disgraceful you guys need to Apologize to your Fathers immediately.

I went to David's gym, NCFA, for four months in 2021 and it had the most solid group of people! It was such a skilled and cool community and I learned so many BJJ techniques, learned to box, and met a few potential future UFC fighters. I knew David was well-respected in the UFC but I never realized his voluntary bow-out of a promising career to focus on the gym. I can say it was a sound decision because he created something very special with his gym in Santa Rosa. Salute to the man.

I was there in 2009-2010 and the environment was pretty intense, and yet still respectful. Dave was a chill funny guy and was pretty hands on as an instructor, which was cool. He was bigger than I thought from watching him on TV, and had almost a Tito Ortiz sized noggin lol. Joe Soto was there at the time too.

@@blacksunday4231 my buddy and future ufc fighter Jordan Williams had just stopped training with us in sac and headed to NCFA around that time.

His legacy is his gym as you said and he has helped countless young minds develop into well disciplined young adults. The number of kids he helped guide and find happiness is what he should be remembered for. I can’t wait for more of these. Super interesting to hear his story back when the IFC and UFC were just breaking out.

Please give us more of these kind of videos!!! Best MMA page on KZread, and I would argue the entire internet.

I didn't know anything about David before this video, but I can say that I'm glad he had a positive outcome to his career. Unfortunately we all know that's usually not how it plays out in this sport.

Good times with some very talented people. You guys that supported our team were the best. Thank you.

Thank you for profiling David’s amazing story. It’s awesome to get a look into the history and hero’s of this sport we all love so much that would otherwise go untold. I really hope he’s living a happy life right now, gave so much to the sport. R.I.P Evan Tanner, always missed.

He helped me mentally and physically back when I first started at NCFA forever grateful for all the support and love.

I personally can tell you, Dave Terrell is one of the best human beings in the world. I remember when he started NCFA! I remember going to his first academy. His brother is amazing as well as well as his father.

The scott Smith fight had a very controversial ending. Basically the ref went in to separate them so scott stopped fighting but david didn't and he got a choke locked on and the ref didn't do anything about it and changed his mind about stopping the action.

I used to train with Dave Terrell at Gracie Academy in Pleasant Hill, California. Dave was frustrating to roll with because he was so freaking good. One time to get Dave ready for a tournament, Cesar had Dave take on everyone in the class. As soon as he finished with one, Cesar would send in another with no rest break. Dave tapped out one after another like a machine. I'm sorry that injuries got the better of him, he was a great guy.

I remember him, i remember the hype. He is just a fighter who looked so so good on paper, but in practice he never went anywhere after the loss to Tanner. He is still immortal for the work he did do..he's here on youtube, that means he is remembered forever.

Amazing. Ive been a fan of MMA for 20 years and I remember the feeling of that David Terrell KO of Matt Lindland. Everyone knew we had just witnessed the next level of this game. As time when on and people kept asking "where the F is David Terrell" I think we all felt let down as to what could have been. The details this video was able to bring were amazing. I knew so little about how this had all gone down and you filled in all the pieces. Great job guys seriously keep this content coming.

Dave I cannot thank you enough and u deserve this. I loved these past 6 years w you and you have helped grow, have thick skin, and feel welcomed at the same time. Not everyone can handle NCFA but if you can, you will reach your goals. Dave you have given me the skills i’ve needed to accomplish so much in wrestling, although I am sad to have left the gym I am so grateful for every opportunity, class, and conversation I have ever had with you.

When I read the title I thought of Andy Wang. He’s a warrior.

This is a very solid piece, I honestly didn't know what happened to him. That's so cool that he dropped fighting to be a coach, I really thought he may have went the other direction based off his rise and fall being so sudden. Kudos to him, liked him 20 years ago, really like him even more today. Thanks for the piece!!

This was very well put together…those early 2000’s with UFC on SpikeTV were so good. So many fighters that just ended up fading away from the sport after having a promising future. I’m glad David is still coaching and getting the next group of MMA fighters ready! On a side note: anytime I hear someone mention Evan Tanners name I instantly get depressed. He was one of my favorite fighters from that era, self taught, wasn’t the best, but you better believe he was going to give everything he had to win. R.I.P. Evan Tanner

I’m not one to comment much, but I have to pay my respects to OGs like this as I sit here renovating my gym. Starting out in 2001 and now having my own Academy because of guys like this who paid their dues and pave the road for dudes like me. I’m no world champion or former UFC champion but a dude in the middle of nowhere who put in work and got his black belt…Thanks to guys like David Terrell! Respect!

What a fantastic production here, MMAOP. This was awesome, and a fantastic way to share in the community and history of MMA. It's not always about the big lights and PPV titles, and a series like this can really explore those moments, of untold lives and journeys.

I love seeing the other side of fighters and how their mindset changes over time, the fight business is brutal and unforgiving, but also enlightening when you hear stories like this and how much dedication and time one person puts into his/her love of a sport ❤️

Well isn't this great timing! I watched the Evan Tanner documentary: Once I was a Champion and this is a nice companion piece. I also can't help, but find parallel in my own life. I may not have made it to the same heights as a David Terrell, but I have dabbled in MMA and still enjoy it as a fan. I have also done other ventures such as being a vocalist in a band and a standup comedian with the dream of reaching fame. This did not happen, but I became a father in 2015 and it helped me to realize that is what mattered the most. I still perform standup locally on occasion and teach my son grappling and striking with pads, so i still have elements of my previous life in my life now, which is great. What I take fro this is that you're destiny may not turn out the way you initially expect it to, but if you can find meaningful purpose in your life then you have achieved your destiny.

My family is well and I know especially with comedy or music, I have the potential of a big break, but I'm happy even if it doesn't happen. I got to try each hobby on my "bucket list" and I have no problem being a family man at this time in my life. My family is doing well thank you and I want to extend best wishes to you and yours.

Thank you for this video. I was lucky enough to kinda be part of the MMA seen in the mid 2000's and watching this video and seeing the fighters and the brands and all that was a trip down memory lane. What a great era for a new sport!! RIP Evan!

Such a well documented video. I trained with the Scrap Pack in the early 2000s and we all looked up to David as a leader and skilled grappler and fighter. It was hard to see him loose to Taner but things happened for a reason. Glad he found peace and passion for teaching BJJ and other MMA disciplines in his community of Santa Rosa. Please make more videos like this.

First, I gotta say thank you. Most of my friends tell me that sometimes I know too much about MMA, you guys introduced me to a real legend, a trailblazer of the sport. The only thing I could change would be changing to thumbnail of the video instead of the "DECENT" to something different like "The 'ASCENTION' of the legend you did not know" but I do know that you are trying to bring eyes to the video and his story. I love the respect that you have for the athlete and for that I give you guys my respect and love, please keep up this awesome work that you guys are doing.

Absolutely amazing video. I grew up in Dave's original facility and it was such a good environment to learn in. I remember when he was preparing for the title fight with Evan Tanner and after the fight happened we didn't see him around as much. As a kid I never understood the reality of the situation but Dave was and still is a legend to me. I still tell people who are getting into MMA about the scrap pack and Dave Terrell and they always love learning about it. Thank you for making this video and shining light on a true legend in the MMA world

Congrats to David on true success. So many think success is money & fame, but true success is accomplishing your goals, not the goals everyone else tells you to reach for. I remember watching David fight back in the day, hadn't thought about him in ages, but I'm glad to see he's doing what he wants.

Very well done mini documentary! Very impressive. Truly feels so good to see someone who has actually done their research on fighters and went in a different direction away from the stereotypes. Instead of a tragic story, we see the person of David Terrell and not a tragedy of a supposed failed career. He makes good money and doesn't have to sacrifice his body for entertainment. He also has purpose and living his life to help others. Thank you for highlighting that. If David were to see this, he would be honored and thankful I believe.

This was a great video. I got into the UFC after David had already left so I never got to see him fight. He looked like an amazing BJJ practitioner and it sounds like he is a great teacher. It’s nice that he has found peace and happiness outside of the sport. Nothing is more important than family and being able to mentor all those young kids is inspirational.

For those of us were around when it was just NHB and so many of the characters who made names for themselves at that time ended up with tragic lives, this video has been a breath of fresh air. I remember Cesar's and Ralph's killers--they were incredible fighters no one wanted to draw in a tournament. So happy to see that David has made his story a true champion's story.
