4:00 Thanksgiving is not (as far as I know) about any specific Indigenous massacre... HOWEVER, here in the Dominican Republic we DO have a festivity on Indigenous massacre! The Day of Our Lady of Mercy _(Día de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes)_ is celebrated every September 24th, in conmemoration of a fight between Spanish conquerors and Taino indigenous defending their land in 1495. According to the legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Spaniards during the battle, ensuring them victory. There's an altar on the supposed site of the massacre (Santo Cerro, in La Vega), made by the conquerors in honour to their victory in 1527. What a "beautiful" way to create traditions we have here in the New World... :)

From what I understand, the idea of a national thanksgiving holiday was originally a propaganda effort on the part of the union in the American civil war (somewhat based). Then the weird stuff about the pilgrims and stuff got added later. That being said, a couple decades after the pilgrims and native peoples first met and started off a weird and complex series of grave robbings, wars, trade, watchful truces, etc. there was a “feast of thanksgiving,” held in celebration of the massacre of 700 Pequot men, women, and children. So like… that event of genocide is probably not directly related to modern celebrations, but it is closer related than the popular myth. Also, that’s fucked up about that holiday in the Dominican Republic.

I don't know if it was about a specific massacre, but I do know that the Wampanoag, the nation referenced in the mythical Thanksgiving story, were indeed massacred by settlers, though perhaps these events were at different times

30:17 - 30:48 The 1968 Olympics were one of the main catalysts for the Tlatelolco Massacre in Mexico, as the government of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz (from the PRI, a succdem party who governed Mexico basically as a one-party state without any opposition from 1930 to 2000) didn't want to give a "bad impression" to the international community, with all the student protests at the moment.

46:25 brief linguistic explanation, if ur interested. this is an example of “voicing assimilation” in english. “s” is an unvoiced consonant, but is surrounded by voiced sounds in the words “islam” and “muslim” so the pronunciation is altered into “z” to match its’ environment. it’s easy enough to pronounce properly if ur being mindful, but that’s why the anglicized/americanized version sounds like that.

30:46 Spanish here: I'm remembering that the World Cup of 1982 happened in a Spain that was transitioning from a fascist dictatorship into a constitutional monarchy, and is seen in Spain as part of that proccess, like showing to the world that Spain was trying to become a new country by burying our Francoist past. Yet at the same time there were right-wing death squads like the "Triple A" and "Fuerza Nueva" (New Force), and the country began repressing the independentist movements in the Basque country (a region in northern Spain) very harshly. Now, I agree that there was the need to wipe out terrorist groups like ETA, but the Spanish government was resorting itself to using terrorist tactics (the GAL) and turning the Basque region (that had gained authonomy under the new Constitution) into an occupied zone. As an interesting sidenote, amongst the writers of the current Spanish Constitution, there was a Communist deputy (the Catalonian Jordi Solé Tura). He later went to the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Worker's Party, known for being neither Spanish, nor Socialist, nor of the Workers) and even became Minister of Culture under Felipe González (if you want a summary of Felipe González, he was basically Spanish Bill Clinton except that as far as I know Clinton wasn't behind terrorist tactics against rebels).

*_"I agree that there was the need to wipe out terrorist groups like ETA"_* The very existence of groups like ETA, GRAPO, or FRAP was PRECISELY because the Spanish fascist state (even when trying to clean itself in the eyes of the liberal-bourgeois international community) was STILL engaging into anti-communist and ethnic suppression of Iberic minorities. The political repression was a self-perpetuating excuse for more political repression.

  • @podemosurss8316

@@Ajente02 That is partially correct, but said violence was extended even after those regions gained authonomy and not only affected the repressive state, but the civilians as well. It should also be noted that said groups didn't have the support of the mayority of the population. Also, at the time I'm talking about (late 1970s and 1980s), the Spanish Constitution was in place, in fact those acts I mention were made under the rule of Felipe González (Basically Spanish Bill Clinton).

That's the mascot of this Qatar World Cup 2022, called _"La'eeb"._ It's a pursefully amorphous character, so _"everyone is invited to interpret what it looks like"_ (though it most closely resembles a kufiya).

@@jamiemcintosh3030 oh. Lmfao Well now I know. I didn't know they used mascots. In american popular culture, about 40 years ago but also more recently there was a popular children's character in a cartoon called Casper the Friendly Ghost. That's immediately what I thought of when I saw this little fella. I couldn't help it. 😂 He looks like a very friendly ghost to me with an adorable face and with the head thing (apologies I don't know the name of it). The name La'eeb sounds so adorable tho. I don't know if it's meant to be but to my ears it sounds that way. Very very cute. Definitely an appropriate name for this mascot lol.
