Stay strong and thanks so much for these podcasts! They are a lot of fun and insightful!

    Beauty standards for women in Europe and east-Asia are simply similar, but more exaggarated in east-Asia. It's about youthfulness and being thin. Similarly an sort of exception has existed for white women and black men. Beauty standards for black men and European men have been very similar. Large and muscley. But again, more exaggerated for black men, which is also where some of the fear of white men (other than racism) comes from, for black men to "take their wife", which in some has developed into a (very racist) fetish. But those standards are now very clearly changing for the newer generations who drool all over k-pop stars.

    For anime and Japanese media and entertainment, there's also a joke about slavery being normalized in a fantasy setting or objectification of people in general, it's more because they are meant to be an escape from reality and these type of stuffs sell apparently, That said. However, there are some enjoyable ones but I haven't seen any actual left-wing theme anime or manga for a while. However, you can have some social commentary that can be seen as left-leaning and progressive or whatnot but they rarely go beyond anything liberals can't feel comfortable with.

    Check out the Kerberos saga. It's been going since the 80s and includes several live action movies, some radio shows, anime, and manga. The basic premise is a world where the N@zis defeated the soviets and took over a Japan that was allied with the allies. So now Japan is ruled by a F@scist puppet government. I've only seen the anime Jin Roh from it, but it has a cult following. From what I've seen, I'd say it's sort of anti fascist, but more liberal if that makes sense. That's the one that comes to mind for me at least.

    Of course most anime infantilizes and objectifies women, yet is so weird to jump from there to assume the fetish for asian women comes from there. Honestly, anime chics don't event look asiatic. Isn't the fetish older than anime's popullarity? And is not popular among my anime fans acquaintances. Other media like idols, I guees it feeds and contributes to it, and anime usually is a gateway into that, but it's hard to conclude causation. I think JT's made a shot in the dark just with prejudice.

  • @Rheitala
    @Rheitala4 ай бұрын

    Hey JT, dunno if you guys read these comments long after the upload, but I just wanted to chime in about your assumption that anime involves a lot of reactionary ideology. Obviously my experience is not indicative of the medium as a whole, but I find most anime carries a quite progressive message. The weird obsession with sexualizing minors seems like a more Japanese cultural thing, which is a whole other can of worms that I really don't care to engage with. On the whole, I think art in general tends to lean more left or even revolutionary, and anime/manga are no exception. As a pretty high-profile example, Eiichiro Oda, author of One Piece, reportedly has a banner of Che by his desk where he works. The story itself is about (eventually) the overthrow of a world government, and while there are some few exceptions, pretty much every member of the military/law enforcement is clearly not a force for good. Thinking about it now, every single anime that comes to mind does not paint any authority in a positive light. TTGL is pretty much about banding together and fighting for a better future when you're told to just stay in your lane and nothing can ever meaningfully change. Kill la Kill is pretty much explicitly just about fascism. I could go on and on, but I'll stop myself here. I'd be glad to share more with anyone who's interested. I've honestly been seeing a lot of communist readings in everything ever since I started falling down this rabbit hole, and I've been thinking about starting a channel to talk about it.

    Yugopnik's point about landmass usage per capita is flawed due to either A) failing to take into account the land used for the production of imported goods, B) skewed numbers due to the inclusion of land used to produce consumer goods imports, or C) Both. Because A and B can either reinforce the argument or break it down somewhat I don't see it as a bad argument, but I never see these points being addressed and it would be cool if they were. In my exurb in the USA (Colorado) my municipality makes a good deal of money off of natural gas and agriculture, while also making decent money off of our downtown. Yet said downtown is bloated with privately owned historical buildings, churches and office spaces. Meanwhile we've allowed much of our farmland to be turned into suburban puke. Touching on the degrowth/growth argument that was avoided; I think a strong stance that can bridge the gap between the two is talking about growth efficiency. If my town's downtown were zoned for mixed use and developers were incentivized to build affordable condominiums closer to downtown we could quadruple the population density within a twelve block square, increase our town's economy, make the town more attractive to people moving to the state, and preserve some of the local jobs that aren't consumerist faff.

    The reason to have illegal immigration is to essentially import slaves to whom safety standards do not apply. For the would be slaves like my father in law who was a illegal migrant this is still better than the alternative in the home country, starvation. What this means in the US however is Americans are competing with slave labor so the skilled trade work and factory work becomes something they cannot support a family with. So all the Americans want to go to college. Meaning colleges can jack up the price of education every year and people will pay it. Then they get put of college to discover that because all the naturalized Americans are getting college degrees that the education is so worthless that it can't even pay off the debt of education. In other words treating one man as a slave impoverished everyone

They're probably just referring to the proposal of an Univeral Basic Income (UBI) who was voted by referendum in 2014 and 2016, and got both rejected. But having an UBI doesn't make a country socialist; as it doesn't abolish private ownership of the means of production, nor commodity production, nor monetary circulation, nor market relations.

    Could the earth support more people? definetly. Will nature as we have it now or we had it over thousands of years be a thing with a lot more people? No. Let me be honest, here in Germany it's too crowded: You cannot even camp in the woods because every kilometer there is another village/town/highway. This country could do with 10 million Germans. Then we could even have actual diverse wildlife with wisents and predators again.

    Capitalism, in Marx's view, promotes a surplus population in order to have a reserve army of labor - a labor pool to compete and drive down wages. The Keynesian values of growth and economic expansion to prevent boom and bust cycles demand new markets and accumulated capital for investment. "But if a surplus labouring population is a necessary product of accumulation or of the development of wealth on a capitalist basis this surplus-population becomes, conversely, the lever of capitalist accumulation, a condition of existence of the capitalist mode of production. Independently of the limits of the actual increase of population, it creates, for the changing needs of the self-expansion of capitalism, a mass of human material always ready for exploitation."

    Tbh when you guys make the argument "the contradiction of infinite growth on a finite planet" I cringe because it's the exact same argument as the "overpopulation" people. One group is racist, the other is arguing the poor regardless of race should stay poor and there needs to be a board who controls reproduction determining if you get to have a family or not. Either way it's dark and fucked

    Hi folks, I just want to comment, I know you occasionally do "response video" so I want to draw your attention to a channel called Moon, assuming you've not already heard of it. They've, for some time, been posting videos about various major corporations with worryingly large hands in global politics and all the ways they've been exploiting the public, but ultimately concluding their videos by saying, effectively (paraphrased) "we need to get back to pure capitalism to fix these problems". He seems, to my mind be someone who's trying to last-minute snatch people from possibly becoming aware of the reality of how corrupt world politics is and divert them towards supporting the system that got us to this position in the first place. The thing is this guys videos seem even more on point than the likes of PragerU or Steve Bannon that there's no way he can possibly get so close to the truth and still post the wrong conclusion without being knowingly completely dishonest.

    OH! I never looked at it as a racist issue... just didn't occur to me because I am crowded by crappy people like myself (white). But trying to get enough water to 8B people in TX is absolutely not feasible. Also - I DON'T WANT to live in a city. That's not everyone's default... sorry to break that to you. I don't know the logistics of general water consumption or how much actual water/space is needed - but that's always been my concern. I still think (for completely non-racist reasons) too many people are on the planet. lol. sue me

    I do recommend population control for the first world, not the third world, as do many. It's a strawman that everyone who talks about this wants it I'm the third world, though many racists do. The first world has a far bigger footprint per person so it makes much more sense to do it in the first world regardless of race or class.
