Aka you can't just shout down one side of the political isle with your supposedly 'perfectly correct' ideology, or just dismiss their ideas with a juvenile joke. You have to actually learn to consider and debate, hopefully with some level of intrigue, respect and synergy, other people's ideas. Now, that's not to say their aren't ideas on the absolutely farthest right which I wouldn't joke about, but far left types, such as Howard, have no idea where those lines in the sand are. It's called 'the horseshoe effect'. Far left loonies, like Howard, are supposed to be a wise riposte to far right loonies. That's a good one, isn't it?

I just flew back yesterday from a month in the USA, there was one moment that I still find really surreal. A man, out of nowhere, came up to me and my friend at the bar and told me he loves to "chase after" pretty British women like us, he wants to "hunt" us, and don't we like the thought of an alpha male like him "capturing prey like you pretty girls"? Shocked laughter from both of us. "Oh, you English girls don't like alpha males, huh?" Me: "Not really, I'm a lesbian." We stuck to gay bars after that.

Living in America, I can tell you it isn't as bad being the butt of worldwide jokes as it is being a citizen. Lack of challenging education, lack of critical self-awareness, the abundance of self-satisfied arrogance, screeching entertainment culture, economic inequity bordering on cruelty, and systems of governing that are, at best, ineffective, at worst, corrupt. Even the much-vaunted landscape is everywhere starting to look like an over-trashed strip mall. Half the people here deserve the mess they've made of it. The other half like to believe they're victims who can't do anything about it. It isn't funny, but you're still laughing.

Really. During Obama's term, the Republican base complained that Obama says too much and complained about his eloquence because they felt manipulated and demanded change. Then the GOP responded by putting out candidates that appease to those voters and took a 180° approach from Obama. That election was the bests thing that could've happened for the Republican party as it happens. It might've saved the party from utter ruin.

y'know, as a history nerd I always wonder...what was actually responsible for the American attitude on the way Europeans handle democracy. like their negative view on socialism of any kind, over indulgence in individualism and general distaste for things like health services and I suppose now, abortion clinics. Was it the Cold War? 9/11 and the War on Terror? Perhaps even as recent as Trump's premiership? If anything I would actually say that it's all three in some way. Stalin and the Communists were openly hostile and anti-establishment while using the excuse of worker's unions and socialism. 9/11 and the War on Terror made the US govern through fear of others and it impacted the way people view others of different faith. And Trump being more or less completely nuts amplified all this fear and all this scepticism that has been simmering under the surface of the US' culture for decades. It's actually pretty sad to see.
