I now work in cosmetics and make flowery hand-creams for middle aged women, really glad i spent 9 years working towards that masters degree in research.

Let's be honest there are more idiots than geniuses (supposedly proven by science funnily enough) so why on earth would leave it in their not so capable hands? The government doesn't itself control everything, they actively employ the public and we constantly pressure them to do what needs to be done.

Karen From Finance Because renewable's are unreliable, and cannot be used to support a grid electric system. There's a reason the industry has been investing so heavily in battery storage instead of improving the technology itself. I personally, as an engineer, think that renewable's are too far off to rely on to solve the clean energy issue. It's a much better option to make coal and gas continually cleaner and gradually transfer to a better source like hydro/nuclear. Note: When I say renewable's I'm specifically talking about solar/wind. Also I don't want to downplay these sources too much, they can be used really well to supplement a decent portion of energy, it's just that too many people think they will be able to switch entirely to these sources, which is just not advisable.

Battery technology is probably one of the biggest hindrances in advancing technology overall. The progression of capacity, discharge, life cycle, and charge rate of batteries has been far out paced by other technologies, like CPU processing power and efficiency. Better batteries equate to overall better electronics, vehicles, and the ability to harness renewable resources. Gathering renewable energy is the easy part, being able to fully take advantage of that energy, store it, and then disseminate that energy is the hard part.

Actually thanks to well funded scientists and Universities (sadly not done in Australia) We'll be seeing capable battery technology reaching all the commercial demands within the next decade! cleantechnica.com/2017/12/21/battery-researchers-keep-coming-new-breakthroughs/ Being a renewable driven world is possible but sadly people in power, controlled by corporate interests, are trying to keep old money businesses afloat (eg: coal industries, fracking) by, as Jordies says de-funding their efforts so local enterprise won't be able to capitalize in future markets. Europe and China will be the economic powerhouses of the future whilst Australia will again be importing everything and wondering why we're non competitive in global markets just as we've complained about the skill shortages.

Labour= Safe schools program(Teaching young children about the joys of same sex relationships, masturbation and gender fluidity- how gender is a social construct and that boys can be girls and girls can be boys). If Labour(The Left) follows Canadas and Swedens lead as they very much seem to be, Parents will eventually be legally forced to facilitate their preteen childs transition to their preferred gender, including choosing a new name, buying clothes appropriate to the chosen gender, and hormone therapy starting at age 7 which will render them permanently infertile. New gender pronouns will be legally enforced on society as is the case in Canada and Sweden such as Hirm Zim Zi to name just a few of the ever increasing list. Labour also supports mass immigration from the third world just like Canada Sweden and most European governments which has been just AWESOME for those countries and the people that live there. Labour QLD has just introduced the most radical abortion laws in the world allowing a termination of pregnancy up to 22 weeks for any reason at all including gender, then with the support of 2 medical professionals, right up to full term if desired. Although I don't like Liberal either, my blood boils every time I hear about Labour and their overseas contemporaries. I know you'll say but this is Australia not Canada or Sweden, and yet Labours policies seem to mirror them precisely.

I’ve always been of the opinion that Australia is in a time-delay of about five/ten years behind Great Britain, in terms of most things economic policy related. Watch out, the government will be announcing Austerity measures next & cutting all the middle-Australia funding QUANGO’s next. All this happening at a time the working-class is no longer allowed to be working. +FriendlyJordies, if you haven’t seen ‘Yes Minister’ yet - you should watch it. It’s on Netflix (if you can get it). It’s aged really well and is still pretty damned relevant.

You really do have to love it when fields like graph theory, measure theory and even their ties with formal sociological theory end up dying in Australia. Pure mathematics at an undergraduate level is basically dead, with only the extreme basics still being taught...and even then that's only at a few universities. Trying to do it at a postgraduate level is now an absolute hellhole as well. It's reached the point where the best option is to go to Germany and even PRC has better options for postgraduate research in many areas of pure mathematics. When a still developing economy is beating us in that regard, there is something horrendously wrong.

This is why I have a Bachelor in Marine Science and have been unable to find work since I left uni...I finished uni when the Libs got in, and well, I have just not been able to get a foot in the door. And places I would have found work had all their funding cut basically. Every job I saw vaguely related to my field was in oil and gas, and I refused to work in that industry.

The absolute crux of the matter is this in my opinion: Lack of Scientists in Parliament. What are their backgrounds? MBA, MBA, MBA, Law, Law, Law. Turbull - Lawyer/Businessman, Julie Bishop - Law, Simon Burmingham - MBA, Mathias Corman - Lawyer, Dutton - Business, Michealea Cash - Lawyer, Frydenburg - law/economics, Greg hunt ... some science! but then did international relations. When you don't understand science you wont invest in it.

Great vid mate. The biggest thing I cant understand is why purchase all defense aircraft, vehicles, etc over seas, while we could be investing the money into Australians to design and build them. It may be reinventing the wheel in some cases, but you don't know what new technology you might come across along the way.

It's a bit of a misconception that research is largely taxpayer-funded. I'm an agricultural scientist and the majority of research grants that we get are from partners in industry (largely the sugar cane industry for agricultural science) or from foundations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation. Government grants, even under Labor, are quite hard to get and a very limited number of them are already given out. I wish it wasn't like this, but it is.

That's just one field. Most of the other fields mentioned in the video don't have the luxury of a full blown primary production industry in Australia that can benefit from their research, particularly climate change research, which is arguably a more important field of research than agricultural science.

darylroll how about alternative fertilisers to prevent nitrogen runoff into the great barrer reef, and crown of thorns starfish in turn. Not to mention the reduction in carbon emissions that you get from eliminating synthetic fertilisers (which use the Haber-Bosch process).

Armitige Shanks Depends on how you look at it. Modern agriculture is a significant contributor to global warming and maintaining food security is arguably one of the most important issues on the planet. You might want to look into the subject a bit more before dismissing it, we're facing some very serious problems right now and trends seen to be showing very large food shortages globally during the next century. All fields of science are important.

JackoNorm but they're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts right. They're doing it to meet some legislative need. No doubt those same funders are having you research why "fruit is worse for you than candy" or some nonsense to justify their continued existence

Australia was a leader in Biotech, now it's dead. I was a scientist in the field of biotechnology for 10 years. I'm now teaching English in Asia. I don't regret my decision to leave. The work conditions were getting pretty bad, and it was getting very commercial. I just wish I could one day do what I enjoyed, research. Unless you are very lucky, you'll end up doing QC or QA work for a large company earning a rather average wage, wishing for something better. This video also reminds me of a Mitchell and Webb sketch. Sums things up quite well! kzread.info/dash/bejne/poeC1bGDZJC8p7g.html
