It's an old one, so might not be so good for view counts, but I'd really love to see your take on the day NewsRadio was born (for me, it'd be S01E03, Smoking) - the day it died was Phil Hartman's death, so S5E01, 'Bill Moves On'. That would be bittersweet but fascinating to hear from your perspective as well. Without NewsRadio there'd arguably be no Community. It's a true lost gem.

I think Lisa's Substitute was the first perfect episode. Such an emotional heavyweight of a main plot, and an absolutely hilarious subplot providing much needed levity. All of the family members were utilized in meaningful ways. There is also so much subtlety going in the character interactions, such as how Marge keeps bringing up Homer when Lisa talks about Mr. Bergstrom, a nod to the fact that Marge feels insecure about Homer's capacity as a male role model to Lisa, or perhaps her own sense that Bergstrom is a better man than her own husband. Everyone remembers the train station farewell scene as the standout moment, but the whole episode is brilliant from start to finish

I’m just watching the simpsons for the first time and I just watched that episode a few days ago. I felt like up to that point it Lisa was heavily underutilized as a member of the families cast, as she had one episode in the first season that was all hers and the rest of the time she was just background noise or Barts moral compass (except in the golf episode where she taught Bart how to play golf). I really enjoyed the episode and felt like a lot of the jokes landed really well like Mrs. Hoover’s Lyme disease being psychosomatic or how Mr. Bergstrom bluntly telling Lisa that if rich people want something the feelings of those in lower economic classes mean nothing. I do also think Bart gets an F arguably could be regarded as a perfect episode but that’s another matter entirely.

Lisas substitute is an amazing episode, but its not an amazing simpsons episode, which sounds silly but makes sense when you sit down and think about it. If I replaced all the characters in the script with the cast from any other family sitcom it would work. It would probably be the best episode (or one of the best) in the series. A simpsons script is different. Its style od humor is satirical and absurdist with dry calculated wit. Its characters have distinct voices and how they'd react to certain situations. Mind you season 2 (which lisas substitute is in) is probably the most foundationally important season since its the one that truly put down the groundwork for the series. It grounded and ironed out who the cast were, what springfield was like, and how they would interact and react to the world. But it wasnt what made the simpsons the simpsons just yet.

I think the Simpsons' huge well-developed cast is what let it stay fresh. They had so many characters that there was always some combination you could put together and have something funny happen. Which is really only possible in an animated show, since there's no way a typical live-action TV sitcom could afford half the supporting cast that Simpsons has.

Flaming Moe is in my all time top 5, but to me, the Simpson's as a phenomenon was born in season 2. I was in my first year in college, and eating at a pizza buffet near the university. The place was packed with students and the big screen was tuned to the Simpson's. It was the premiere of 'Bart the Daredevil.' At the end, when Homer keeps falling down the cliff, the place was racous, with students literally rolling on the floor. After that, I never missed an episode until sometime in 1999, when I pretty much stopped watching forever.

I personally think the golden age started during season 2, a season so many people overlook. It was so down to earth and the episodes in my opinion were top notch. Practically every single episode portrayed a realistic and relatable scenario. I personally think the era started with "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge". On the other side, some people say season 9 ended the golden era with The Principal & the Pauper but that episode doesn't define all episodes from the season (I don't actually hate that episode but understand why some do). There were a lot of classic episodes from that season that have heart and humor such as Lisa's Sax and The Joy of Sect. Interesting fact about The Principal and the Pauper is that it was originally supposed to be a season 8 episode evident with the production code "4F23" which is the same as those from the mentioned season. I personally think season 10's "Homer Simpson in: 'Kidney Trouble'" ended the golden era. That episode was so cruel and portrayed Homer in a way never expressed during the previous seasons. Also the episodes that followed felt generally from a different era with wackier endings. I think season 2's "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge" started the golden era with season 4's "Duffless", season 6's "And Maggie Makes Three" and season 7's "Mother Simpson" being the era at it's peak, finally concluding with season 10's "Homer Simpson in: 'Kidney Trouble'".

Congratulations for reaching 100 videos! For me, the episode where the Simpsons were born was "Homer Alone". I think that episode got the definitive Simpsons formula right. I think Season 3 was the moment when the show was finally feeling very comfortable with what it was doing in premise, characters and humor.

I don't remember a moment of my childhood when I wasn't watching Simpsons. Most of my (and family's collective) humour comes from those first 8 or so series. Although technically an 'adult' animation, my brothers and I would watch it religiously when we'd get the chance. We owned the first 7-10 series on DVD and watched them until the discs scratched up. We then got the British equivalent of cable when we were ten/eleven and watched them all over again almost every night. We watched it so much we obviously quoted it to no end. My parents were raised on 60/70s British comedy (Peter Sellers etc) but my mother and father especially had a great affinity for the show. It was something we'd gather around at dinner and just howl. Watching those early series today make me pretty emotional. Now I look bak on it and think of how it strengthened my relationship with my elder brother especially (since we didn't have that much in common when we were growing up.) Whenever the early series is rerun on TV today, my brothers and I will watch it at dinner, and the jokes would still hit us hard. Your video really made me think of these things, little moments as they may be, but are so special to me. It's funny how one show could make an impact on not just my life, but those of my whole family. That's the magic. Thank you so much.

Funny enough, your reason for picking up the saxophone in high school (my elementary school didn't have an instrumental music program) is the exact same as mine - I liked the sound of Lisa Simpson playing and wanted to sound like that. Had no idea the instrument I would eventually be assigned - the bari sax - was the EXACT type she played. For my four years there I was the only bari player and those years were so much fun with so many great people.
