Lost media is a topic that has always been of great interest to me. Pieces of media, that have been lost to time, going unarchived. From lost SpongeBob episodes, to strange or obscure commercials to video games that were pulled from shelves. But in the world of lost media, exists pieces of media that were lost for a reason… they were lost on purpose. Today we’re going to be discussing a few of those cases that exist in the world of wrestling. Wrestling footage, matches, and moments that were erased all for varying reasons…and all for good reason.

    Benoit originally being on the cover for SVR2008 makes complete sense. On the weekend the murder-suicide happened, he was supposed to win the ECW Championship from CM Punk and become the face of that brand. If you remember SVR had Lashley on the cover represented ECW.

    I think what makes the Misawa story that much more tragic is when you hear that when he heard Misawa died, Toshiaki Kawada, his greatest rival throughout his career retired immediately. Obviously thats tragic on the real level, like he retired because someone who was probably his friend backstage died, but even on a Kayfabe level, you imagine a heel character like Kawada getting the news that his greatest rival has died in the ring, the only man who could ever give him real fight was gone, and he retires immediately, because he knows theres no one else who can challenge him. It's like that episode of Batman where The Joker hears that Batman might be dead, and he goes to commit a robbery, and when Batman never shows up, he puts everything back and says without Batman, it just isn't fun anymore.

    I remember Jim Cornette saying back in the early 80’s, the NWA would re-record over previous episodes on tapes to save money. And after WCW acquired NWA he was leaving the Greensboro office one evening and found a garbage can full of old tapes on his way home. It’s sad how much we probably lost.

    Considering NWA TV was always made on a budget, I'm not surprised. It was common practice in TV up to the early 80s. It's shocking how many lost episodes there are even of pretty iconic TV shows. Even Dr. Who has a ton of lost episodes. Granted I'd much rather watch old NWA than Dr. Who, but that was a big budget production from one of the biggest broadcasters in the world at that time.

    Misawa was that rare type of dude that would do magazine interviews gushing about nerdy shit like Pokemon and Fire Emblem games, and then hit the ring and be an absolute badass. Whenever you see some boomer claim that video games made modern wrestlers soft just ask them how they feel about Misawa and watch them shut the fuck up with the quickness. RIP to the legend, there will never be another Misawa.

    I was there at Glory by Honor when he was there, and seeing him in person, he just had this aura about him, it's impossible to describe. I've met a lot of pretty famous wrestlers before (at least 2 I can think of off the top of my head later become world champions in WWE) and have never been star struck, but with Misawa it was just different. Even outside of the ring, he just carried himself like a real champion, and it just felt like he could crush you with a thought.

    Maybe the reason why svr2008 career mode sucked so much was because he played a big role in the mode so they had to quickly rework it after what happened which is why so many cutscenes were repeated not trying to spread rumors but if there is a prototype out there maybe there is an entire unfinished career mode to.

  • @CrimsonCrunch211
    @CrimsonCrunch2118 ай бұрын

    The Gamesmaster magazine for May 2007 has SvsR 2008 on the cover also as their first feature of the game, maybe the Info about Benoit is in that one. Also the dates hardly match with these old future magazines as sometimes it can be a month either way from release from the one put on the cover.

  • @gabepollock1641
    @gabepollock16418 ай бұрын

    As far as Benoit being in SvR ‘08, there is some credence to him being planned for the game but dummied out. If he was going to be on the cover, that’d be a weird forethought by THQ/Yuke’s. Cena, Lashley, and Undertaker were their respective brand’s heavyweight champions after Mania 23 in 2007, and Benoit wasn’t scheduled to win the title until June at Vengeance. Given that most of the games operate with a WrestleMania cut-off date for content (particularly pre-DLC era games), it’d be odd for WWE to tip off the publisher two months ahead of a title swap so that the package was up to date, especially considering none of the 3 who were on it were holding their respective titles by release day.

    If they recalled that magazine, there is still a chance some rare copies of the original print are out there. I think it is kind of strange that benoit wasn't mentioned at all in the article if that version of the article was printed before the murder suicide as he was a main even level star and would likely have played a big role in the game with or without being on the cover.

  • @meadebe

    I think with the smackdown vs raw 08 Benoit thing can most likely be chalked up to them lying, or if it did happen the game they played was actually svr07 not 08. The likelihood of that demo not showing up is highly improbable by this point

    Both Benoit and Misawa's passing hit me hard when it happened. Benoit was my favorite wrestler of all at the time then, and I had the chance to meet him on one rare occasion the then WWF came to my country. It was the best day of my life until he did what he did. I was also a huge fan of NOAH, mostly of the hard hitting championship main events from when they worked for AJPW. I remember coming back from work and seeing the news of what had happened, and spend the rest of the day glued to the computer waiting for updates on the situation. After he died, it was just hard for me to watch his classic matches with all the head drop spots.

    There is absolutely zero reason to think that magazine was published the day after Benoit did what he did. His passing date is June 24th 2007 and a magazine dated June 2007 would have been printed and on the shelves way before then. Seriously back then magazines were dated a month or 2 earlier than the cover date. I actually worked for a company that handled magazines and comics. It would've been early 2000s when I was there but when I was doing that gig a June cover date for example would've been the last month it would've been available. As in by the end of the month we would've pulled anything still on the rack displaying the same month.

    I’m not 100% certain but I think that news clip at the start of the Benoit clip might have shown Pac-Man jones. He was a former titans player and even wrestled a bit in tna. If it was him it’s kinda a wild coincidence he’d be the one football player shown in a wrestling video. But the titans aren’t talked that much in major media and I was only 6 at the time of the Benoit stuff so I’d have no clue what other titans the media would talk about outside of Tennessee around that time.

    The Doctor who cleared Flair to wrestle needs there licence to practice medicine taking from them... If Ric won't retire from in-ring competition on his own, then Promoters need to step in and not book him to be in the ring... I could see Flair in a managerial role, as a mentor to a young Wrestler and so on... At 73 years old, he doesn't need to be in the ring having matches

    @@davec.3129actually, tbh, saddest part of Owen dying is that the guy who did it not only got away with it but was and still is massively rewarded for it and he's such a moron he doesn't even know why what he did was bad. They never bothered telling Kevin Dunn that it's definitely the on the fly change he made to the clip holding Owen based on how it would look on camera that killed him... why bother? Anyone who'd make that switch without, you know, caring at all if it can actually hold any weight...? No reason to bother telling them they'd guessed wrong when they never asked themselves or cared.

    You mean physically? As in somebody else did it? That's a new one. We've all heard the theory that he wasn't aware of what he was doing due to the severe head trauma he sustained over his career. And yeah, that one has to be atleast partially true considering the results of the medical examination. But it being a frame job or a crime committed by somebody else is an interesting thought.

    I don’t see how it was pointless. It still falls under the wrestling lost media. Because there’s a very good chance that at some point, the developers had him playable, rarer builds of games have come out in the past. For other series that have had only rumored Content in them, until they were proven to be real.

    I don’t think you get the point. It’s the fact that it’s very eerie that there is a very good possibility that in the transition And development time for SmackDown versus raw 2008 that he was implemented in the game because it’s essentially just on the same engine as 2007 but because the game was going to come out late 2007 there is a very good chance that he was playable at some point. Obviously he would be in a game that released in 2006 for SVR 2007. But I’m sure it took a while for WWE to completely get in touch with all of their partners, including THQ to remove him from the product.

Yes lemme get to it finally before I have to run to the bathroom again cuz I ate-- no no kidding, jk... I swear I saw Jake the Snake DDT hogan on the snake pit or whatever show, MUCH to the delight of the crowd... I remember cheering and being so happy and satisfied that of course not only he got DDT'd into oblivion but that the crowd loved it too...
