Rhonda Byrne's Film, "The Secret" popularised the "Law of Attraction" greatly, and has allowed this philosophy/belief to permeate in the mainstream for a very long time.
But the history that lies behind "The Secret" is one that has its roots all the way back to the 1800s, where the New Thought Movement began taking strides, as well as other New Age beliefs.
In this video, we take a dive into that history, and the sinister industry that his been built up around it. We'll take a look at some of the most influential figures in New Thought throughout the past, to present day. Figures like Napoleon Hill (author of "Think and Grow Rich", and "The Law of Success"), Esther/Abraham Hicks (Author of "The Law of Attraction" and various other works), Bob Proctor, Rhonda Byrne, and others.
We will also identify just how New Age Spirituality has allowed itself to become a perfect grift, for gurus with questionable intentions to enter the space and take advantage of those in a more vulnerable and desperate situation. Those who are in desperate need of wealth, those who are in desperate need for relationships, health, happiness, etc etc.
New Age/New Thought exists in many areas of the self-help industry too, and although hard to initially spot, once someone familiarises themselves with the teachings of New Thought and the overall philosophy it isn't hard to begin seeing the patterns.
We will also explore the connections between New Age gurus and Multi Level Marketing companies. A connection that seems very prevalent within many of the big figures in this industry.

You’re not allowed to have emotions, you’re not allowed to touch certain topics and if you’re ever in pain, it’s your fault. You mourn over a loss and you’re looked at with disgust. “You did it to yourself”. No. I didn’t. It’s callous and lacks conscience - made by people who don’t want to face their emotions or handle the emotions of those around them. It’s spiritually bypassing and leads to people around them to “mask” to not be pushed away: the minute you bring up the fraud of this movement, you’re called “blocked” or told “you don’t get it”. You’re constantly mentally devalued because they have spiritual ego that squishes the self esteem out of everyone around them. You have sit, smile, and not oppose anything or you’re put down. It destroys the people around them and the brainwashed individual is completely assured they cannot get angry - and if you get sick, it’s your problem. Imagine being on life support being sick with cancer and your partner looking at you like you’re weak because A. You did it to yourself and B. You’re not trying hard enough. Meanwhile they deny all illness they have and rename them. Want me to go on?? 😂

I've read The Secret. Honestly, my takeaway is that positive thinking can help motivate you when you feel shitty, but you have to do the actual work to achieve actual stuff. If you're sick, go to the doctor, if you want money, you have to work at something. A perfect life will not just fall into your lap because you think happy thoughts.

The teachings of "we are gods" and "we are worms," although looking like opposites, result in the same cruel damage to those who believe. If you're NEVER allowed to just accept both the glory and the absurdity of being human, it will lead to a dark place. Stoicism, determinism, Calvinism etc. lead to the "we are worms" conclusion -- so anything bad that happens to you is your fault, even if you are unable to change it. A little bit insane and unhinged. But the opposite, "we are gods," ALSO means that anything bad that happens to you is your fault, because you didn't "believe" enough or have strong enough ability to prevent it. Both of those views completely strip us if our humanity. There's no mercy, no compassion -- just blind, brute worship of "principle" even in the face of self-mutilation. Letting go of that lust for "certainty" is paradoxically the only path to emotional security.

Listen, take it from me, I was depressed, suicidal, and gave up on my life 7 years ago, I decided with willpower to change my way of perception and the story I was telling myself. The thoughts that were in my mind were negative, I was broke, didn't see any way out, taking care of a sick parent, felt stuck in life, and my thoughts were down right draining the life out of me. A sudden shift happened within myself, I stopped feeling sorry for myself and I took accountability for everything in my life then let go of fear and guilt. I started believing in myself more, and things I wanted would happen, I put in the effort for them though. Things don't just magically happen for you, you must seek them out with intention, willpower and action. Positive thinking helps a lot though, to see the bright side of a horrible situation might change the way you see everything in life. Now I look for opportunity In every situation (good or bad). Final thoughts...A true "Guru" won't charge you money to teach you something that is priceless. There are too many scammers out there so be careful!

My life has been changed through doing some of these new age practices along with Ritual Magick. I'm with you because you can't just do the internal work, it takes external effort. Almost everything I've learned has cost me nothing. I don't pay for workshops or seminars, and occasionally I will buy and audiobook or regular book to learn some deeper things. Even science is starting to suggest that reality is just a simulation and that our mind is what creates everything we see. We can all benefit from the help of psychotherapy and belief in ourselves. Again though I also believe that you still need to do the external work to give the internal a path of least resistance to work through. For example my partner and I did a ritual to manifest a new job for me that I would be happy at and be working for someone who was a good leader. I had already put in applications at that point and got a call the next day from a job an interview that lasted 5 min because it was a formality and started the following Monday. My manager is exactly the type of person I wanted to work for because he is a good leader and isn't going to stay in the same place forever, he is moving forward and is already putting in extra time to make sure I'm better at my job. Do I think I could of got the job either way, sure, do i think getting called the day after the ritual was a direct result of us doing that? Maybe or maybe not all I know is it put my head in the space to go after what I wanted. I just got lucky the first call I got was exactly what I wanted.

Ruthlessness to achieve goals is a good way to describe how it works for the people who believe in it. Our beliefs about ourselves have a powerful effect on our actions and our actions set in motion the reactions. There’s no magic element to it, it’s just logic. But being so narrow focused on achieving our own goals can leave us blind to how we might be hurting other people to get there. It’s a kind of selfishness.

And because I don’t charge money, and offer myself freely and help people get the results they wish for... I’m absolutely hated for it... new age spiritual folk in this for the money are, and can be quite vile creatures. When they discover you’re not like them and in it for the money and ego swell. They will attack you in anyway possible. Stooping lower than the energies they speak about. Your uncle is correct in my opinion. My experience tells me that most of these people are actually quite mentally ill and un aware of it, or in denial. Most of them can’t even follow the basic fundamentals that they teach. When I first started suffering from this, I was a believer that thoughts have some special meaning, and that belief amplified my OCD. Therapy has taught me that thoughts don’t have meaning unless you give them meaning. Everyone thinks “immorally” at times, but behavior is what makes the difference. This video is liberating!

They had plans for me and I spoiled it. I could probably write a book here but I will just say beware. Never throw your discernment away. After that, all of the questions that I'd been asking my entire life (I'm 68) snapped into focus. It still left me with the age old question: "OK. So now what?" Thank you, I needed this. I'm somewhat involved with this stuff - and while it mostly just brings positive thinking and hope into my life, for a while it did cause me to wait around for good things to happen to me instead of putting in the work. I quit my job to build a business, a decision I still stand by, but at my core I believed things would just fall into place for me because I wanted it enough. I'm obviously young and naive and learning, and have since started putting in the work and doing the scary things. But in my low moments, I'll still reach for my tarot deck to try and extract some hope - I think I can excuse myself that weakness :)

I suppose what I meant is that spiritual beliefs and magics in general, while they have a long history of being used for scams, have mostly sincere roots in old tradition, culture and attempts to understand the world, metaphysical or physical. Of course, we have the information to look at a lot of this stuff and note it's flaws and suspicious aspects, so people absolutely should take heed of that. Belief alone usually doesn’t cut it. For example, I rarely visualize my great physique, but I love to lift & eat healthy. I see myself as a fit individual. So this action process becomes enjoyable, and that’s the sweet spot.

  • @larbueno

Margot, I am very sorry for your loss. When I read the first line of your comment I'm unclear if it was you or your sister who was involved with Esther...or maybe even both of you. However, I think you are referring to your sister. Life will always present us with moments that are dreadful. We will ALL lose those closest to us...or they will lose us, but eventually we will cease to exist as living, breathing humans. If your sister passed with a smile on her face riding a bicycle, perhaps she left this world in more peace than the majority of people. Since I don't know the circumstances of the event, I won't make assumptions which could hurt you. What I hope I'm saying with clarity is I used to watch and absorb much of what Esther spoke of over a decade ago. I never got that she was insincere or using us as her pawns. I thought her messages seemed spot-on. I don't listen to her anymore, but I don't blame her for any bad things that may happen to me. All of us will get blasted by Life now and then. I guess it's how we respond to the challenge of anger, pain, loss and blame that determines how we heal...if we heal at all. I believe healing is a choice...not an easy one to get to, though. I did the newage thing from the late 80's through mid-late 90's. I was a disillusioned young man looking for a deeper meaning to life and the answers seemed to be available through the many folks offering a cleansing of past pains, a renewal of positivity and dreams achievable...I read books, watched DVD's, attended workshops, travelled around the country (paid for by selling things that actually were making money for me...camera equipment), traveling abroad, sleeping on the floors in homes of the teachers and I was talking all the talk spoken by the newest guru and his/her disciples I'd found. Many of these "teachers" were smart people who had their concepts down. I was looking for answers! I kept looking for me out there and yes, I DID learn one major lesson which I wish I'd figured out years earlier...that it was me making the choices and nobody was "making me" make them. I got to choose to be a victim or NOT. I learned that I was responsible for my actions AND reactions. It was ME who was creating my life and it was ME who could allow or disallow people into my life and it was ME who would only allow decent, decent, non-narcissists into my life. It also was me who would have "bad stuff" happen to. You know, things like loss of love relationships, not enough money, people I loved dearly dying. You know, real life. That stuff happens to the gurus, too. Thankfully I'm not mad or bitter about any of my past teachers who may have been scamming me. They all together taught me to be responsible for the decisions I make...even if those decisions ended badly. I've learned to not blame others. That's HUGE. I hope you don't blame Esther, whether she's a scammer or a real deal. God Bless, Margot.

He is forgetting one thing..some people believe in karma...and as an example the people who are born in poverty and starve their whole life is a result of their actions in previous lifes..theyve build it themselves..how can you explain it otherwise..why would nature or god let innocent people suffer and others born in riches lead a wonderful live? My logic is that the law of attraction works in a way for certain people and people who have been born in bad circumstances is more the result of bad karma

  • @ik1408

I am replying to the karma question and explaining why karma most likely does not work. 1. Lessons from punishment are learned when people know what they are punished for and not when they have have no recollection of their past deeds. 2. Among rich and fortunate people, there are so many really bad characters, skunks. If reincarnation really happens, it is logical to assume that the character traits of an reincarnated person are preserved from one reincarnation to another. Otherwise, it would not be called reincarnation (bringng the same human entity into another round of life). Hence, a person, who is bad in this life, was also bad in his/her previous lives and did bad things as the person's character dictated. Yet, in this round of life, they are still nasty, but not punished by karma for being nasty in their previous lives and living in wealth. This indicates no karma. Think of German Nazis, who tortured and killed thousands of people, looted money, escaped from Europe, moved to America and lived long and enjoyable lives after that. What kind of karma lets such monsters live decades of their lives in luxury after they committed those crimes? No karma. Karma is comforting belief of weak people, who are not strong enough to stand up against bad guys.

_The Secret_ was one of the assigned readings I had to go through in secondary school. Luckily, most of us didn't get infected with its nonsense. The book was later delisted in the following years' assignments, but the teacher who recommended it insisted that it's an awesome piece of self-help material necessary to "make kids stronger". It's a devastating piece of mental malware that I argue has done more harm than all the ransomware attacks ever occurred combined.

They might as well slip a razor blade in with the book so the kids can punish themselves when they don’t achieve their goals. SMH! I can’t believe some of the shite they put in public schools
