The Dark Knight Rises - Symbolic & Emotional Closure | Video Essay

Ойын-сауық

The Dark Knight Rises was Christopher Nolan's conclusion to The Dark Knight Trilogy, and although many see it as one of his weaker films, I defend that the film is better and more meaningful than most people remember. In this video essay, I discuss how The Dark Knight Rises succeeds as a symbolic and emotional closure for the character of Bruce Wayne and Batman. My Christopher Nolan Marathon on the road to TENET continues with video essays every week on all of the director's filmography.

I love The Dark Knight Rises. The Climb scene was so phenomenal.

This was my favorite in the whole trilogy. Everything Batman feared came to fruition....What u said about Alfred was spot on, remember the key moment when Alfred is desperately trying to talk Bruce out of tracking down Bane, 'look at his speed, his virosity'. The one thing in this scene that always stood out to me was how his suit rises up and how it's displayed. It always looked to me like it was intentionally made to look like the suit had a sort of identity of it's own that in a way was made to look seductive yet wrong for that moment to reinforce Alfred's plea. We as an audience always want him to put that suit on but why does it feel so wrong in that moment? Which is why this film hit the hardest with me. There's a lot of similar scenes throughout the film that visually elevate the emotional weight each scene carried. Especially the wall Street scene how silent the hostages were in the presence of Bane.

matt bell I just love how each film focuses on a difference aspect to test Bruce. His presence, his mentality and then of course his physicality. In the final film all of it comes together to create a test of his human spirit and it really pays off. So under appreciated.

This is my favorite film in not only The Dark Knight Trilogy, but in Nolan’s filmography. He brings his trilogy full circle. Ending Bruce Wayne‘s story in a way that shows he’s able to finally move on from being angry and letting someone else carry on the mantle of Batman is something I’ve loved since I first saw this film opening midnight in 2012. As time goes on, this film has received more love and enjoyment from audiences. While I wish this film received the love it seems to have now, I’m glad people are finally accepting this film for what it is and not for what they expected and in turn disliked it for not getting the ending to the trilogy they had in mind, as I think that sort of hurt this film’s reception for some at the time. Releasing four years after The Dark Knight, people were so excited and amped that anything less than 110% perfection would never satisfy some people. I went in with two thoughts: I hope this film is good and I hope it has a good ending to the trilogy. For me the film met those two expectations and more. While I say I love each of the films in the trilogy equally, which I do, if I have to say which one is my favorite, I’ll have no problem saying The Dark Knight Rises. This film also shows just what Christopher Nolan wants to do with his films in the future: make big epic films that has a story that is so encapsulating that you’re in awe of what you’re seeing. Nolan continues to demonstrate just how fantastic of a filmmaker he is and I always look forward to a new film of his whenever they’re announced. Great analysis man!

Great work again mate! I also think „The Dark Knight Rises“ is one of Nolan‘s most underrated movies, even though I believe he should have ended the Movie with Michael Caine‘s view instead of actually showing Bruce sitting in the Café with Selina. In my opinion this would have had a much bigger emotional impact. Nevertheless, a great ending for my favourite movie trilogy of all time...

Thanks man and I can totally see that with the ending. I love the overall idea of it though, felt bittersweet in a way. I do agree that it's underappreciated. Like his other work, it just tends to age well and grow on re watches, especially in conjunction with the first two film. Great to hear your thoughts!

A very interesting analysis mate. I loved the small cinemagraphe used when talking about catwoman. To me TDKR is clearly Chris Nolan improvising after Eath Ledger’s death, since he had planned TDKR to be centered around the joker’s judgment in court (which would have been super interesting since the joker tells the Batman in the interrogation room he knew who he was after he seen how he jumped to save Rachael). Keep up the great work

Happy you liked it man. And wow, I would have loved to have seen that with ledger. Yeah, I must admit I didn't love cat-woman the first time I saw the film, but the more I've watched it, I think her character works perfectly in fitting into all the main story points surrounding Bruce. Her characters places in well with the themes being set up.

Heath Ledger was never planned to be in The Dark Knight Rises at any point. This is clear when the earliest we can find anything regarding Christopher Nolan crafting any sort of outline of a third Batman film was back in December 2008, around the time The Dark Knight was released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Nolan never plans sequels for his films as he’s always focused at the film at hand. After finishing The Dark Knight and it was released in theaters, Nolan began to think of a possible continuation of Bruce Wayne’s story. This was done after Ledger died, so Nolan would have never consider using the Joker in any way in the third film. I don’t know where this idea of Nolan always wanted Ledger in a third Batman film came from, but it’s never been true and is something that should stop being told. While it’s true Nolan did think of crafting a trilogy back when he was working on the story of Batman Begins, he quickly threw that idea out as he didn’t want to box himself into a scenario where he has planned a story with three films he’s going to follow as well as not wanting to presume a sequel to Batman Begins would happen, because had the film failed, then whatever story outlines he and David Goyer has crafted the next two installments would have been made for nothing.

Batman is mirrored after Ra's al Ghul in a way, both are immortal! Both of them are ideas and will live on in others! Bane and Blake were examples of that, and I love how Nolan made them immortal on a idealistic level than a supernatural one.

It would’ve been too easy to make Bruce “grizzled” and “cynical” like in the Dark Knight Returns. I dig how Nolan had him go down a more broken path where he’s trying to become the man he used to be.

Bro I always noticed the Bruce Alfred “very well then” from the first two movies. With Bruce calling Alfred back. I NEVER noticed that in the third movie the next morning he calls Alfreds name but he isn’t there.

I totally understand that the film has a few pacing issues....and a couple of quick fixes to certian plot elements.....this could've been an even longer film, and I personally would have been okay with that.... but I feel this film receives negative criticism that I blows my mind.....this is a well made film, and story...there is so much emphasis in this film, that I feel many people have a hard time grasping

I always thought the movie would be better rounded if Nolan had more time to properly finish it since Warner was so eager to win another billion after The Dark Knight. Great video, Thanx!!!
