The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a church in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. According to traditions dating back to the fourth century, it contains the two holiest sites in Christianity: the site where Jesus was crucified, at a place known as Calvary or Golgotha, and Jesus's empty tomb, where he is believed by Christians to have been buried and resurrected.
After allegedly seeing a vision of a cross in the sky in 312, Constantine the Great converted to Christianity, signed the Edict of Milan legalising the religion, and sent his mother Helena to Jerusalem to look for Christ's tomb. With the help of Bishop of Caesarea Eusebius and Bishop of Jerusalem Macarius, three crosses were found near a tomb, leading the Romans to believe that they had found Calvary. Constantine ordered in about 326 that the temple to Jupiter/Venus be replaced by a church. After the temple was torn down and its ruins removed, the soil was removed from the cave, revealing a rock-cut tomb that Helena and Macarius identified as the burial site of Jesus. A shrine was built, enclosing the rock tomb walls within its own.
In 327, Constantine and Helena separately commissioned the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem to commemorate the birth of Jesus.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built as separate constructs over the two holy sites: the great basilica (the Martyrium visited by Egeria in the 380s), an enclosed colonnaded atrium (the Triportico) with the traditional site of Calvary in one corner, and across a courtyard, a rotunda called the Anastasis ("Resurrection"), where Helena and Macarius believed Jesus to have been buried.
The church was consecrated on 13 September 335. Every year, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the anniversary of the Dedication of the Temple of the Resurrection of Christ

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered licensed tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am present tudies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee,

    What fragrance is the incense?

The fragrance is not frankincense, as in the Roman Catholic Church. I can tell you that for sure because I have lived in Thessalonica, Greece for 7 years. They use a different incense, and I actually don't like it.(Personally, I don't think they have the true transsubstantiation). I just wrote a comment asking why ROMAN CATHOLICS are not allowed to incense the church everyday, like the Greeks and Armenians. These Christians actually battle Roman Catholics. The Greeks are particularly avid about it. I know that because I have lived in Thessalonica, Greece for 7 years. They are extremely anti-Roman Catholic, unfortunately. Also, since the Greeks were the ones who were allowed to restore the tomb, I think the inscriptions on the surrounding walls are also only in Greek. Perhaps I am mistaken, but it is time for Roman Catholics to stand up to history. We were the ones who began the crusades at the request of the Patriarch of Constantinople because of Islamic invasions. There were 400 years of battles for the Holy Land, and it took them 200 years to drive the Muslims out of Spain. Don't believe all the horror stories about the crusaders. They restored Jerusalem a couple of times. None of the Christian sites would even exist if it weren't for the intervention of the USA, which is actually the only country nowadays which is fighting the violent Islamists.

I don’t believe it’s the tomb of Jesus!! They were buried outside the city.

You are totally misinformed. This area was outside the city of Jerusalem at the time of Christ. The place where Jesus was buried was only "a stone's throw away from the crucifixion site", as the gospels say.(How far can you throw a stone?) The quarry is there and visible. Historically this site has been proven as correct for hundreds of years. St. Helena was the one who found the True Cross and recovered the old sites, some of which had been covered over by pagan temples. She went to Jerusalem in the 300s--the fourth century. She also found the three crosses. She asked God for a sign in order to know which one was Christ's cross. A sick person was brought to the crosses and when the sick person touched the True Cross, she was healed. That is how St. Helena knew which was the true cross. Also, when the tomb was recently restored, they found markings from the crusaders designating the site and other inscriptions. Study your religious history. By the way, the tomb which some 19th-20th century Protestants claim as the tomb of Christ has been dated by Israeli scientists and archaeologists as having been from much later--4th to 8th century A.D. I believe.
