The Cyber Fiction Saga of Horse_Ebooks and Pronunciation Book

Ойын-сауық

The early 2010s witnessed two enigmatic internet mysteries: the Twitter profile Horse_eBooks, and the KZread channel Pronunciation Book. Over the following years, these two gradually became stranger, eventually coalescing into a reveal which was more bizarre than any could have anticipated.

I followed Horse_Ebooks for years in the contexts of alt lit/weird twitter/twitter literature and couldn't help feeling betrayed when it was revealed to be a marketing gimmick. Of course, I have no right to feel betrayed by twitter account pretending to be a spam bot, but, at the time, it felt like giving Horse_Ebooks an end result undersold what made it special. This video helped me understand the account within a larger artistic context and how the process (and not the products) of Horse_Ebooks and Pronunciation Book were what were valued by their creators. Thank you.

These mystery deep-dive videos definitely hit different when you already know all about what ended up happening! I was a grown adult in 2013 and caught wind of the Pronunciation Guide mystery before the countdown started, and finding out that Horse_Ebooks was also involved came as a surprise to me when the reveal happened. I had personally been in the "This is an ARG for a reboot of Battlestar Galactica" camp until then. I spent a lot of the video telling the screen loudly "IT WAS AN AD FOR BEAR STEARNS BRAVO, A WEIRD ART GAME" like the questions about the cause weren't rhetorical.

I remember this! I don't know how I first heard about it, just that Pronunciation Book went nuts, and I started eagerly awaiting to see just what it was counting down to. I didn't even hear about horse_ebooks until it intersected with Pronunciation Book, so that was a trip. I also remember the ultimate reveal being something of a disappointment for some people on the internet, but I was absolutely delighted, because Bear Stearns Bravo was WEIRD, and what is essentially a visual novel about a fictionalized and wildly surreal take on the 2007 financial crisis was a thing I didn't know I needed until then. To this day I'm pretty bummed that the final episode never materialized. A while ago my sister expressed frustration at Pronunciation Manual's bizarre nature, and I explained the whole thing to her. The fact that it was a parody of a flash-in-the-pan fad is sort of hard to believe in retrospect.

Wow, a video on something I was actually following as it happened! I think more than Bear Stearns Bravo, the Bravospam event rubbed people the wrong way. They can call it a "hole in the wall", but in practice it was an installation in a SoHo art gallery. I remember people on the forums being upset about this--that this project that many thought would be an ARG, something digitally native with a grassroots community building around it, was all just part of some guy's experimental art gallery show where he sits at a desk and answers a telephone. People felt alienated.

Yeah, but it's kind-of to be expected. I mean, with how it's presented, it felt very apocalyptic with the crazy countdown and stuff giving it this kind-of creepy unrealistic feel. So it's very odd to see it turn out to be for a low/budget absurdist parody project, but, at the same time, this was honestly the most people could have expected, really. I mean, it was never going to count down to anything actually serious or dangerous, but at least this was something fun and interesting that wasn't just some weird corporate marketing tactic for something really big and mainstream. Like if this was counting down to the release of a Star Wars film or something then that would probably be the actual dumbest.

Magical times, even if many folks didn't like how it ended.

Just now learning about all this and honestly, it's kinda wholesome that 2 Childhood friends collab'd to fuck with the internet. I only ever watched PronunciationBook as a kid, but stopped after it started to get somewhat too nonsensical. While leaving things as a mystery tends to preserve the suspense of what something COULD be, knowing the conclusion years later really kind of hammers home the whole thought process of good things must end for the sake of not burning out in a puff of sadness. I'm glad both ended up culminating in a project between friends.

We ordered 400 tacos to go, and ate them mournfully. I remember waiting for that image to complete, and calling the number. I had different people reading messages, and I heard others in the background reading their selections to others. It felt like performance art for BSB. I'm assuming the cast were on hand to read the lines on the first day. The one who introduced me to this experience also mentioned TIMM as a possible connection. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

The effort they put into this whole thing, even each individual section, is impressive. I dont think many people fully appreciate how much effort is put into videos that are not just someone filming themselves or running clips together. So while there is a little disappointment in BSB as the answer to the countdown, BSB in itself is still an impressive work that i see the other two as an impressive use of marketing. To the people who do the content for this site (or if you are only one, Mad Respect!) I think you did a great summary of this story, I couldnt ever quite explain it to people who are like "whats horse-ebooks" im like "you need to look it up". I have tourettes and often hop around to ideas retelling things. I would be there forever explaining, I would then just make people think i was nuts (they sometimes do anyway) You Totally Have A New Subscriber!
