in a nutshell, he did started everything that's associated with modern hip hop, good and bad, which includes the issues with lyricism as something irrelevant in mainstream hip hop (save exceptions), soulja's music was and will still being bad, but his genius as a producer is just insane.

Because his music is bad. In the grand scheme of things growing through social media was going to be a thing with or without Soulja boy youtube was going to be the next big thing with or without Soulja boy. So artists were going to be on it with or without Soulja boy. And MySpace was originally supposed to be for musical artists and bands to post their music so obviously that would have been done with or without Soulja boy too. As someone who actually lived through it as a teenager and not a child I can tell you Soulja boy didn't have as big of an influence as everybody thinks. Yea crank that blew up for a summer and people made different versions but that's where his influence in music truly starts and ends and it was a horrible 1. All those songs were awful

He also went huge in kind of a bad way for himself. Crank That was such a bubblegum pop rap type of song outside of a few lines that his primary audience was white suburbia and pop radio, which made it damn near impossible for him to be taken seriously later. The kid was dancing to it on Ellen FFS. If he'd never released Crank That he wouldn't have gotten as big but he likely could have enjoyed a slow climb and be given more respect now.

He literally paved the way for folks like Diddy, Dre, Eminem, Beyoncé, Nas, and every other artist alive? Damn. Dude must really be a legend. He understood viral culture. That’s about it. He didn’t innovate how music is played or produced. He didn’t write songs that had any depth to it. He innovated how to trick people into thinking they were downloading good music only to find out they got Rick Rolled. If you think Soulja is a legend in rap/hip hop, you must be a zoomer with zero knowledge of music prior to 2010. You probably think Drake is one of the best artists ever, too.
