The Curious Art of Quoll Quietening
This is a video of Lisa and I in a typical training routine. Lisa is a parent-raised spotted-tail quoll (Dasyurus maculatus). Lisa used to display aggressive behaviours toward keepers, particularly when food was present. Over roughly an 8-month period, Lisa and I built up mutual trust and she is now able to leave her exhibit each day, have encounters with the public and lead an overall more enriched and happy life.

Native animals have had a massive resurgence in my area, due to control of cats and foxes, but also rehabilitation of vedgitaton! So I wouldn't say increasing inhospitable! We have lots of work to do, but we are on the right track!
Notice how she feeds the quoll with long tweezers? This is because the last person who tried to handfeed one lost their arm and shoulder. :p
Just wonderful. Thank you for that bit of joy.
cuteness overload
why do i get the impression that it just wants to eat every seconds of it life ?

They do, I was harassed by one when I was camping last, for several days. It was not happy until it had a share of my mac and cheese, and even then it did battle with the pademelons for what would surely have been half its weight in food. At one point I even convinced it to take food from my hand while being photographed with a flash.

Wow very interesting! I was "room mates" with a big Male brushtail Possum for years, it was a very interesting experience! He would trash my kitchen during winter unless bribed with food, and make a racket at night in general, but would screech if you played loud music during the day. Hahahaha 🤣. Also hated me spotlighting him in the trees at night. Only did a couple of times! Also he watched TV! My dog doesn't do that!

Targeting stick, its used for positive reinforcement, whenever they touch the stick they get a treat, at least in the beginning of training
2 great friends animals are so receptive .....
I'd be interested to know where this collection is
User Uuduu7 is right - it is only interested in the food. I doubt it is interested in any "encounters with the public".
@74KU

"encounters with the public" mean food to the quoll, so I am pretty sure outside of breeding this is the quolls number 1 interest. You don't have to "train" them to take food either, they are quite smart, in fact I am aware of a number of wild quoll in a certain location that take hand feeding. I even have a photo to prove it.

'Encounters with the public' are about education, raising awareness (they are still around our area) & support from the public, at least partially for the purpose of the quolls' well-being. Some sheep farmers may not like a quoll on their property & could harm these increasingly rare animals. Quolls need some good PR.
Such a magnificent marsupial! Is it closely related to the Tasmanian tiger?
@sydneyatkins6249
3 жыл бұрын
Closer than possums or kangaroos, but not super close. Thylacines closest living relatives are the tasmanian devil and numbats, if I recall correctly, and even then they split 10s of millions of years ago.
@tigerlilly5579

Closer to the Tasmanian Devil. They look like small versions of the Devil but with spots. Especially the black morphs of the quoll.
@Meevious

@@sydneyatkins6249 Within Dasyuromorpha, there are three main groups: one has the thylacine, another the numbat and the last has every other extant species of dasyuromorph. The numbat is slightly more closely related to the thylacine than it is to the other lot and is by far the thylacine's closest relative. The Tasmanian devil and quoll are much more closely related to each other than to other dasyurids. I don't personally think that they look much alike considering they're sister taxa, but on close inspection, they don't look much like anything else either!
So cute ...
wish i could interact with quolls everyday :(

It has been said pets were made of quolls by early white settliers A bush assumption was that the dark brown ones made the better pet as apposed to the more orange ones, (is there such a distinction?) Maybe folklore myth!
@tjarlzquoll9835

Probably a myth, the different coloured eastern quolls were considered different species by settlers at one stage. Should have asked the locals instead of shooting or poisoning them!
@tigerlilly5579

From what I have read, it wasn’t the European settlers killing them directly, but the feral cats and foxes brought by them that did the dirty work. And the Dingo, which was introduced by man, though much earlier. Now it’s the cane toads that may cause their extinction. Again, brought by man. One would think people would have learned by now not to bring non-native species into a country and release them into the wild.
@Meevious

@@tigerlilly5579 The introduced species have had more success, but humans have certainly tried, as farmers can be salty about losing animals to predators and quolls have some particular habits, like killing more than they can eat (after killing larger animals, like chickens and geese, they tend to suck the blood from the neck wound, leaving the corpse, but they may decide to kill every chicken in a coop, so they can drink in peace and quiet) that cause farmers annoyance. @Ian Thomson Makes a lot of sense to me, in that the timid eastern quolls can be found in a wide variety of browns, but the bolder spotted tailed quolls like this girl are always a lighter orangey colour. A spotted tailed quoll is a much larger and more formidable animal with more destructive potential and probably not very easy to share a house with, while eastern quolls are very careful and generally try to be invisible.

It is always of value to make a captive animal more receptive to humans....for the sake of stress-free feeding, getting close enough to observe an injury (better still, handle them) without stressing them & finally, of course treating them without having to dart some of the bigger ones to get near them. It has been done gently.
