The Crusades: What Really Happened? - Explaining the Faith

Hear Fr. Chris Alar explain what you need to know about the Crusades and its history with Islam. As Muslim expansion increased into Christian lands, was the Catholic Church morally able to respond? What is a just war and did the Crusades qualify? Separate truth from fiction.

I’m Portuguese, the islamic occupation of our catholic realms (at the time there were various kingdoms on the Iberian peninsula) has left an indelible impression on our psyche - centuries later. We were taught at school about the crusades and how they saved us from being under Moorish / Islamic dominion. We were enslaved. And forced to convert to Islam. So we’re grateful for the Crusades.

@@bcalvert321 Do you have evidence for the generalized claim that all crusaders were there only for glory and gold? It is very hard to see into peoples motives in the present. It seems impossible to prove your claim for people that lived many centuries ago. There is the religious component, and there is the self defense component. Of course there are always going to be rotten apples here and there. There is evidence that the Byzantine emperor asked for help to the pope. They were about to be invaded in the same way as north Africa and Spain were conquered. Rome was next. See Battle of Lepanto. Eventually Constantinople fell after the last crusade. The crusades delayed this. Without this delayed the momentum would have been carried to Europe, and probably you and me, and the rest of America would be Muslim now.

And they don't teach about the suffering of the Catholic Church during the Second World War. The death of many Priests religious etc,.The saving of 800,000 Jews. The sending of Catholic soldiers to the Eastern Front [Russia] where the death rate was very high, not the Western Frontline where there would be a higher desertion rate. We have too many political Priest's who will not defend the Church.

During my secular college years I studied Islam in- depth as part of my history degree. My witness here is that I walked away from that learning experience a Catholic. The Crusades had a lot to do with that conversion in my life. Fr. Alar is absolutely correct: no Crusades, no Christian church.

We respect the personal opinion of the Good Priest fr. Chris, yeah In WW2 both phil and poland the one who suffered most are the chosen people same to poland but dont be Proud of it, cause the problem with pride is it can corrupt people, your capital letters speak itself, we all know of about the Stupidity of Filipino Pride. anyone can be a Chosen people of God but we must be humble no matter who you are, which country you came from, we Catholics are part of the one True Universal Church we must be united as one helping each other, not thinking "that one country is more special than the other one". Thats why for me i get rid of my national pride, cause its wrong and and as a catholic we have universal faith spiritually connected to each other brothers and sisters of christ we must be selfless not selfish, with humility we must be grateful that we are Catholic christians. But remember Patriotism is different from national pride, Patriotism is Good its love for one's country and recognizing its limitations and seeks to remedy them, but nationalism aka national pride is selfish its an extreme devotion that places ones own country above all others, very secular mindset... But religously with catholic faith we are supposed to be humble and treat each other equally as sinners seeking for refuge, truth, strenght, mercy and love of God. God bless us all

What else is new? Multiple generations now have been relying on Catholic Schools (many in name only) to properly teach the faith to their children. Many parents have abdicated their duty to be the PRIMARY educators of their children in the faith and other things. That is in our official job description according to the Church - to be the primary educators. They've farmed it out to these "Catholic" schools who are happy to take your money but then fail to teach your kids the most important reason you sent them their for. And now in many cases they are getting straight up anti-Catholic, marxist, and satanic stuff taught to them as if they were in public schools. It's been happening for decades now.

The Catholic schools in many non US countries especially Asia ( I can only speak of my region) do incredible work and produce many good doctors and professionals who contribute to society. Many former Catholic school alumni from my country are scientists and skilled doctors in several countries including Australia and the UK. We are not taught to hate but to think critically and act morally to uphold the truth.

Then you should plan some kind of viewing parties either at your house as a slumber party (if boys do that) or at you church. Talk to some of the other mothers, friends of your son or at your church, & see if they want to help you with it. Y’all can make it a series, order pizza, buckets or chicken, or get women in the church to sign up to bring food or drinks. You could keep the same menu every time or change it up, lasagna, chili, tacos, whatever is popular with kids in your area. You could even let the teens vote on the menu if you want. You could do all teens together or do boys on Friday & girls on Saturday & do lock-ins (sleepovers inside the church where y’all are literally locked in for the night.)

But then it continues "...and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day." So that clarifies that the new CCC claims they "profess to" and "adore" the same God as us which is self evidently not true. We are in agreement about the fact that their god cannot be the same one true God of the Holy Trinity that we believe in. But I think we disagree on what the catechism is actually saying about this...

I really liked this Catholic history lesson! I remember when I read the book; The Revelations of St. Bridget of Sweden, the Blessed Virgin Mary explained to St. Bridget the armor of the Knights and what each part represented as a soldier of Christ in relation to the virtues needed...., in a way similar to St. Paul telling us to put on the Armor of Christ. Our Blessed Mother also spoke sadly of the misuse and abuse of the power of some of the Sacred Knights. I believe it was in the 1300's.... I really didn't see the correlation at the time. I think perhaps I'm going to reread the book again soon. People forget or just simply do not know that the demons' natural activity is to tempt us. We cannot do it on our own. Prayer is absolutely necessary.....and fasting and sacrifices. 🙏🏼🕯️✝️

My whole post was just deleted. I will just say that I found this talk to be the weakest that this priest has made. I find some parts simply shocking with deeply ingrained US propaganda messages. The bombing of Japan with nuclear bombs was not done to shorten the war and save lives. That is what the US propaganda was at the time in 1945. No one still believes that today. The two sites that were bombed where the centres of Catholicism in Japan. That is why they were bombed. For that reason and to send a message to Russia. The war was over and then they dropped those bombs. For a Catholic priest to be spreading 1945 propaganda is astonishing. The US army has made no attempt to save human lives. I flat out reject and oppose those statements. I point to Smedley Butler who is very clear that the US army works for corporations and is concerned ONLY with financial profit.

  • @DivineMercy_Official

    @DivineMercy_Official

I listed that the bombing was not a just act, and I explained the reasons given by the Church. Regarding your point, the surrender of Japan came three days after Nagasaki, avoiding an invasion of Japan that would have cost tens of thousands of American lives. Any logical person can make that conclusion. I will pray for your lack of gratitude for the freedom you enjoy because the free world that you live in today is due to the blood of American men who gave their life for it. I find it shocking that you have such little respect for that. May God open your heart.

Now, I understand the road that St. Francis of Assisi took. He joined the Crusade in 1202, 1205 etc. He even attempted to convert the Sultan and put an end to the conflict in the 5th crusade, etc. etc. Thanks Fr. Chris for educating us.

I've always loved reading history - as early as I can get, but mostly 11th and 12th century Kings and Queens, and their deep connections with the Church.

I love your talks about everything Fr. CHRIS ALAR. I am Filipino born to Catholic Filipino parents and raised in GCC of small island BH. I gotta say our church is only one that has been close since last year. Yet majority of mosque where open to the public during the time of Ramadan after vaccination. I am praying just some day that ban will be lifted off that one church so I can get to confession along with my family. BTW I discovered DvnMrcy channel when we couldn't go to Mass outside yet You where the first priest I spotted KZread. God Bless You and our Marian Fathers and to the Community.

What Father Chris explains here I have actually known instinctively for decades and the lies about the Crusades were and are invariably used by the Christian haters to discredit the Catholic Church. This is wonderful that once a Catholic priest has the courage to tell the truth to the world, yet I can say that if you put this to the enemies of the church they won't even bother to listen or reconsider their opinion in the service of the truth and most of the time will even react aggressively! why? because these people have long embraced the lies above the truth and are sadly destined to be lost.

This talk is highly enlightening , Thank you Fr. for making it available to all. All that I heard & knew about the Crusades was from movies and books (novels) , being from India , world history does not mean much to us. I do appreciate the cause of the Crusades was for the defending of Holy land , and they were strong in Faith. Let us all be united & committed to our Faith, wherever we are . For this we pray.
