About my new book - Why Does the Heathen Rage:
It is twenty-four years since the First Crusaders conquered Jerusalem. Robert Bures is a young knight whose father rose to power and prosperity in the new Crusader kingdom, and whose uncle died in battle with the Saracens. Nothing matters more to him than defending the Holy Sepulcher, the tomb of Jesus Christ, more sacred than any shrine in Christendom. Robert has been a trusted retainer to Baldwin II, King of Jerusalem, a veteran of the First Crusade who now rules the beleaguered Christian outpost in the Holy Land, but his friendship with the King's daughter, the beautiful and headstrong Princess Melisende, is growing unfittingly close. In Aleppo, the Turkish warlord Balak has raised a vast Saracen army and promises to drive the Christians into the sea. King Baldwin II is short of men and funds, yet his faith in God in unshakable, and he inspires passionate loyalty in his troops. His daughter Melisende feels the weight of the future pressing down upon her, for her father has no son, and she is heir to a Kingdom that her people believe would be better inherited by a warrior prince. Why Does the Heathen Rage? explores a magnificent but rarely examined chapter in Crusades history. The Kingdom of Jerusalem is young, and beset from all sides with enemies. In the face of unending trials, King Baldwin II and his knights fight with zeal, ready to die for the city that Christ made sacred with his blood: Jerusalem.

Saying that Greed & glory was not a primary motivation for the Crusades is absolute laughable Nonsense, The Fact that all those Crusader kings were at each others throats, trying to claim each city they came across for one's self & double crossing the Byzantines and their Crusader armies constantly Looting, pillaging and killing more Christians & Jews then all Saracen attacks combined throws that "Spiritual cause" argument out of the window

Johnny Wolfblood from what I have read the numbers are slightly inaccurate since there were around 35,000 to 36,000 Ottoman Soldiers and 6,100 Maltese and Spanish Soldiers plus some more soldiers from other empires with help from 9,000 civilians. I might be wrong.

Nope, it’s definitely 40,000. I’m just talking about the final battle as well. If we want to include all of the soldiers from the beginning, rumours put the Ottomans from 100,000-over 300,000.

In 1095 Alexius I Komenenos of Constantinople Christian sent envoys to Pope Urban II asking for mercenary troops from the West to help confront the Seljuk Turkish Sunni Muslims advances on Constantinople and the Eastern Christian territories. In November 1095, at the Council of Clermont in southern France, the Pope called on Western Christians to take up arms to aid of Alexios I Komenenos of Constantinople, this marked the beginning of the First Crusades.

Johannes -- You to only look at Islam to see that it isn't positive in any way shape or form. I don't think anyone other then actual Muslims would think such a thing, so why would changing the past history alter the negativity of Islam today, the chances and the facts are its Christians, sorry. People interested in this topic are fixated on who started the nine, or the first of the nine crusades and not fixated on whats important (Who was responsible for most of the deaths and destruction after the beginning of the crusades) The answer to that is no doubt the Judaism Catholics/protestants. But if you are really interested, Judaism along with it's offspring sect: Christianity and Islam were always fighting. This goes for most religions and tribes when first in contact with each other. The first attack and start of the Crusades; however was when Peter the Hermit ignored the orders of the pope and attacked the Turks (Islamic sect) with an army. After that Crusade Knights invaded Jerusalem to "reclaim" the holy site in which God would apparently come back to, and killed anyone who would not change their views and subdue to Christianity, this in part along with many other attacks brought one of the worst times in history. To add insult to injury Christians would even kill/burn people with different views in the same religion. Catholics and Protestants would have wars among their community and many died. Mostly the Protestants, that's completely separate from the crusades, yet shows how much mercy Christianity really had hundreds of years ago.

Trey Charles oh because the Muslim religion is so tolerant to differing views and beliefs? aren't they currently throwing gays off rooftops and beheading and burning THEIR OWN PEOPLE for different point of views? And what about the 750 odd yrs that the Muslims spent attacking the whole world, not just Christendom? Yeah and this isn't propaganda, it's basically what you'll read out of any actual real historical book or selection. but nice try.

I think it was mainly due to the puppet pope. French king had influence over him, and basically "Most argued reason is for sake of power and paranoia of crusaders becoming too big" so they had to accuse them of heresy to basically make people turn on them. And thats how crusaders became bankrupt and disbanded.
