i absolutely adore this movie. It's rogue one without it's flaws and being tethered to the star wars/disney. the conflict is intricate and truly made of shades of gray. both sides are right and both are wrong. Colonel is completely right in her convinction- just listen to the "neanderthals" speech. from her point of view it trully is us vs them. Noone outside of top brass knows that LA wasn't AI's fault. And yet, even if it isn't- who's to say that they won't revolt down the line? they have the capactiy to outdo humans in every category- of course people are paranoid. revenge for LA, survival of the species and dehumanisation of the enemy can make you justify a whole lot of terrible things. they're not human after all, so it's ok, right? and on the other hand there's the AI and their supporters- they're sentient and just want to be left alone. Whether they are real or not is just semantics. they feel, hurt and are brutally dispatched. the brutal way the US is dealing with them forces them to play dirty too, after all- why wouldn't you with an enemy that wants to eradicate every single one of you? for humans it about the threat of genocide, for AI the genocide is very real and happening Like in Rogue 1 i see heavy Vietnam War undertones, but while there it was reduced to aesthetics here it's expanded, one could say perfected. US fighting a brutal preemptive (and based on a lie) east asia war to "guard" the world from the enemy spreading it's influence? So many words to not say "domino theory" just the setting itself screams 'nam with all those rural villages, the pertruding karst and islets, the bridge that feels ripped straight out of Apocalypse now. Also music being very deliberately peppered with old school rock. The main question of the story is a great pararel for our wars, how we dehumanise "the others", the treatment of AI isn't that far off from how one would think about Japs and Charlie back in the day or Haji and Muj quite recently, and in some way while it talks about future AI war it also makes it timeless in a sense as for the main star- Dude really can act. here we can see what we didn't see in Tenet- emotion. inner conflict. nuance and shit. There he was mostly a silent protagonist led by sheer willpower, an institution rather than a man. It was designed like that, but let's be honest, Robert Pattison did a hard carry in this movie. Here it's definitely on mr. Washington's shoulders. Dude got talent The little kid was a bit over the top adorable with "what is heaven" and other lines, but that was her purpose and she fullfilled it perfectly. as for the ending- Yeah. that "one more minute with her" and the heroic sacrifice hit hard. This is what Rogue One was meant to be. Personaly- i grade it as a 8/10 in its genre, best action Sci-fi since Oblivion Sidebar- i don't think they fired a nuke from NOMAD itself. from my understanding the station was built deep into the war, which could have started a long long time ago, that senate hearing or whatever you call it of a general speaking after LA's destruction doesn't look modern by any means. i think the war has to be at the very least 15 years old, but quite possibly it could be going on for decades. we know that it took 10 years to build nomad and we know that it was used at least as soon as 5 years ago, since this movie takes place 5 years after Joshua's botched undercover mission. It could be a forever war, just one that the East is currently loosing because of nomad and Nirmata being in a coma. and even then, it took 5 years of Nomad freely operating and Maya's coma to get East to its near colapse it is shown in. I'm thinking it's more like 20-30 years of war. can't be more as Joshua's parents died in LA. He could be a kid while that happened, but still, more is reaching

The movie, for me, wasn't about AI. It was about humans coexisting. It was about accepting people for who they are and what they believe. It was about the danger of believing you have moral superiority and the evil that is done in its name. Sure, it delved into themes of humanity, AI, and the implications of both. But, for me it said a lot more about the important issues of our time than the future and the implications of AI.

This movie marks the first time in a VERY long time for me where I genuinely felt a connection for the characters. I actually found myself caring about them and feeling what they’re experiencing. I had almost forgotten how a movie could elicit this kind of emotion from me. I never imagined I’d actually be crying in a sci-fi movie about AI robots, but this movie delivers so many emotional moments that it’s hard not to be affected by it. I’m also a father, and the young AI robot mirrored a lot of the experiences I’ve had with my own children. I found myself wanting her to be saved and protected like she was actually a real child. Again, I was not expecting to have this kind of a connection to a sci-fi robot. Hats off to everyone involved with this movie. It was a phenomenal masterpiece, and exactly the type of content we desperately need in the movie industry. I really hope we’ll start seeing more movies like this.

Recently read an interview with Gareth Edwards who said that he never had any CGI suits on the set for the AI robots. They were all filmed as normal characters and then in post, ILM was told which people can be the AI. I think that's why seeing them act like humans when they cry, get hurt etc is soooo good.

This was very disappointing to me. The dumbest 'sci fi' film since AntMan 3. The robots act like humans but they are also physically weird so we can immediately tell they are robots. They are incredibly weak and dumb also, like Terminators crossed with Star Wars Storm Troopers. Nothing they are doing makes any sense. Also the premise that America tries to ban or stop all AI is hilariously ignorant of America from a social satire perspective. *America will never stop AI once corporations start making money off of it.* A.I. weapons for Pentagon. Sex Bots for the masses. Hate bots you can denigrate, abuse and enslave, and you're golden. America can't stop that anymore than they can stop twitter, guns and internet porn because those things relate their TRUE VALUES. Film is too shallow, vapid and stupid to go there though. Blade Runner for the cognitively challenged.

Saw this on Wednesday, and I was blown away by how terrific it is. The opening news reels were amazing and it brought the entire story to the front of what has happened between the humans and AI. It does what Cameron did with T2. So much in this movie is just great. The story (until the last act which dipped slightly but was still good) was emotional and brought a human story to the front of AI. The CGI effects are outstanding and is how sci fi movies should look in 2023. Flawless. Washington is just brilliant in these roles and I'm so happy seeing him take on serious SCI FI projects (this, Tenet etc) and he's not going the easy root for movies. Like when Joshua figures out exactly which piece of the village shrine to twist to open the secret lab entrance. Or the idea that the US military couldn't destroy The Child without Joshua. (Couldn't anyone have EMP'd her/it?). Or a van full of kids getting shot up at point-blank range and no one getting hit. Or the military's rationale for getting Joshua involved again. Or the van driver greeting Joshua in English even though they are in rural Asia, the driver is Asian, and everyone else is speaking a local language. Makes me appreciate Blade Runner 2049 and the writing on that. Only knock I have on the special effects is that Nomad kept changing size and altitude.

I really caught a Vietnam War vibe from this movie. The technologically superior superpower invading a country in Southeast Asia, willing to wipe out entire villages in order to find an elusive enemy, who the soldiers are trained to see as less than human. How and why did this war start? Was it a misunderstanding? Was it an accident that one side exploited to drive public support for a pointless war? Can we learn to live together in peace or is humanity doomed to annihilate itself? Great movie. Great writing. Please make more like this one!

Great movie! Thanks for the review. I also got the feeling that it didnt necessarily have to be about AI being good and trying to change our toughts on it, but more in general just human prejudice against those are different than ourselves. Not realizing that we are more similar that we are different, and like you said resorting to violence as a first choice, a lot because of our history. Of course a lot also about the US and how it freely attacks and gets involved in other countries as it pleases, or when they just dont like something. Definitely felt a lot of parellels with the vietnam war, with the movie largely being set in asia, and the US trying to stop the spread of communism (AI).

I really enjoyed the film, but did feel that it was lacking in parts. The pacing can either be incredibly fast or move at a snails pace at times. Some decisions felt awkward at times, and I really wanted to get more information on AI religion and culture. But still really like the movie and thought it looked beautiful. Also the Kid A part was probably my favorite movie moment of the year. I love it when film makers do things like that. 7.7/10

I just realized why Joshua is disaled. It seems kinda benign to make him a disabled person, but since he goes to Maya to give him prosthetics, it symbolizes that she 'completed him', as a person. But overall, the movie was really good, one of the best movies I have seen. But it deserves a 9/10 since I feel like it could've been longer, exploring the themes of AI sentiences, and scene when he tries to find Maya in the city in New Asia.

I saw it in Imax today. I'm so torn, visually it was fullfilling, but the pacing, characterisation and story were in-cohesive, sadly, which led to frustrations. I think in the hand of a more established filmaker this could have been truly epic. The fact that the Ai couldnt shoot for shit was odd, they're not stormtroopers, they're AI - surely their vision and aim should be better than a human? The scene on the bridge was daft, they're all missing the one guy coming at them... come on!! Id have loved to have seen some POV viewpoint from the AI simulants too.. another missed opportunity. Overall, 7 out of 10. breaking that down, 9 out of 10 for visuals, but 5 out of 10 for storytelling.

I liked the movie a lot but I can’t help but feeling it would’ve worked better as a tv series or with a longer run time? Like fleshing out Alfie and Josh relationship while they were on the run would’ve been really cool. A last of us type of bond forming. Been playing 2077 a lot for the last week, so robot waifu who was dating Josh’s friend took me back to night city with her design. She shouldn’t have died 😭. It’s fucked up that they both died trying to help Josh and just being nice people. No good deed goes unpunished. I like how the ending is a mix of a superman and titanic reference as well as the obvious religious symbolism. In the end Josh and Maya got to see each other one more time but fuck I wish they could’ve had a better ending. The world is so cruel and unforgiving. Good old US army committing war crimes by dropping missiles on escaping civilians. Oh yea and ngl the war being started just by HUMAN error is very disappointing. I thought that there would be a terrorist organisation or something behind it all but knowing it was started over something like that is so shitty.
