The Crazy Mind of Simone Biles | Skills She Never Did in Competition

Спорт

#gymnastics #masterclass #sports
Olympic champion Simone Biles is known for pushing the limits of gymnastics scoring like no one else.
Just when you think this sport has reached its peak, she comes in and sets a new boundary.
As of May 2021, the American gymnast has a total of 4 eponymous skills in the Code of Points and a fifth one on the way.
But she could have double the amount.
In this video, we'll take a look at 5 skills that could be named after Simone Biles if she committed to it.

What is your opinion on the fact dance elements are capped at E? Do you think it's fair? Gymnasts like Sanne Wevers can't perform a Double Double, but could work on upgrading her spins if she was fairly rewarded for it. Why do you think dance elements are considered "less" than acrobatic skills? Just want to hear some opinions :)

I think it's fair on floor. I wouldn't like seeing that a gymnast making a triple twist, double front, full in, front 2.5 twist, etc and get the same difficulty as someone doing a quad Y turn for example. I think dance elements are easier to train and are less likely to injury and much less penalized in execution, for a turn you could get like 0.2 deducted for balance and precision (not counting falls) but for a triple twist you could get (flexed feet 0.1, leg separation 0.1, crossed legs 0.1, step or hop on landing 0.1 or 0.3, low chest 0.1 or 0.3, bent knees 0.1, out of bounds 0.1 or 0.3). Also you could increase the difficulty last minute, if you're planning a triple turn, you maybe could add that extra turn in the way if you're lucky and make it a quad, but no way you would be able to go for a triple twist and get lucky and make it a 3.5 or a quad, or make your full in a silivas. I hope I'm being clear

I think they should both raise the cap on dance elements and be more strict with execution, allowing to create and differenciate more types of turns. The routines would be way more interesting. This does not take anything out of gymnasts with great tumbling, but it allows to see different interpretations of "artistic" gymnastics. My dream COP would encourage both Simone Biles and routines that have outstanding composition and execution, resembling the best compulsories.

"Deserves" is a subjective term entitled people use to complain. Just because she can do something, doesn't mean she should, or that somehow because she can do it she should get more of a score for it. She needs to compete within the rules and scoring system, not whine about a system that "should" be in place to reward her. The goal should be perfection, not danger.

I think the double layout dismount of beam is far from being feasible, even for Simone. Catalina Ponor also tried it in training too but they both landed too low to do it safely. It’s humanely not possible now given the height of the beam, even if Simone’s form was beautiful. That would be a real safety issue (as opposed to the double double).

Why haven’t people with clout in the gymnastics world called out the FIG for their bullhockey reasoning in under-valuing Simone Biles’s double double dismount off beam? “Safety” is NOT a legitimate criterion for assessing skill difficulty relative to one another, or we would never let a gymnast’s hands and feet leave the ground at the same time. Difficulty rating is NOT the appropriate tool for addressing safety concerns. It’s completely illogical from any sane perspective, and represents either profound ignorance of the sport’s history, or a stunningly condescending attitude of superiority to expect us to be too stupid to remember the past or too awed by their omniscience to challenge the pronouncement. If a skill presents too great a risk that can’t be otherwise mitigated, then BAN it. Don’t manipulate the scoring.

(lies!)...#2 The triple-double seems much more dangerous to me. Simone almost flew off the floor exercise performing that particular skill at the 2019 world championships, while the double-double has looked beautifully controlled (high chest and stuck landing). There's something fishy afoot.

I was thinking of more signature moves by Biles if she wants to push the gymnastics limits. Here is my guesses..... The Biles 3 on Floor Exercise will be a triple twisting triple somersault in a straight position but with the hand over the air for the first part of the aerial. This will be Grade F on the FIG if Biles completes that. The Biles 4 - would be the dismount on the uneven bar, usually the high part of the bar - a reverse triple somersault in tuck position before landing. Hard to do. If she lands great, it will be Grade G on the FIG. The Biles 5 - on floor exercise - would be a quintuple pirouette spin in pike position (5 revolutions) when the gymnast does the center work on the floor. This would be Grade F to G in the FIG if she can do this. Next to impossible to pull out such a pike unless you have great flexibility. The Biles 6 - also on Floor exercise - would be like an "arco-iris" (double straight leg jumping-and-turning kick) in Capoeira. It will be a pike jump with either 1/2 or a full turn before landing. If half a turn, this would be Grade F. If a full turn, this would be Grade G. I know that Simone may not complete these new moves even though she already has 4 moves named for her. But now that she is out of the "twisties" issues, she wants to risk herself even more on the gymnastics sites......

The points classification on her double double dismount irritates me more every time I see her compete without it. This is exactly what open scoring was implemented for. FIG bans skills it deems too dangerous. So ban it or score it correctly, but don't backdoor a ban by cheapening the value of the athletic achievement.

I think that is what they said is bs. Simone can do these things by going above and beyond others. That is what being the goat is. As for the other gymnasts, you practice and try different skills and if you are not prepared or not sure don't try it, know your limits.

  • @xgise

    @xgise

I agree with you, but I see the point of trying to limit who tries it. Gymnasts should know their limits and I'm sure they do, but there have been documented cases of gymnasts pressured into trying skills they are not ready for, with catastrophic results. Maybe that doesn't happen as much, but we can't know for sure what goes on behind the scenes in every country, I mean if USAG has such a horrifying history of abuse hidden for decades, can we be sure is not similar in other countries? I agree that it's terribly unfair to Simone though, and instead of trying to shortchange her skills I think the FIG should look into the programs of all countries and implement strict protocols to avoid situations like that

She can do it in front grip and do a full pirouette to eagle, like the men do, but she can't do it like that. When pirouetting, I thought you cannot come down on the same side you went up. Also, it would be called a Yurchenko triple, not a triple Yurchenko. She's only doing one yurchenko. Much like you call it a handspring double front, not a double front handspring.
