the craziest day in college basketball history

Фильм және анимация

Saturday February 26, 2022 very well may have been the craziest day in college basketball history. For the first ever, every team ranked in the top six lost. In addition, seven of the top ten ranked teams lost on the same day for the first time ever. Top ranked Gonzaga lost to St Mary's, second ranked Arizona was upset by Colorado, third ranked Auburn lost to Tennessee, fourth ranked Purdue lost on a game winner against Michigan State, fifth ranked Kansas lost against Baylor, sixth ranked Kentucky lost against Arkansas, and ninth ranked Texas Tech lost to TCU. Another major upset occurred in Chicago as lowly Chicago State took down WAC leading New Mexico State in the final seconds despite being 17 point underdogs. And in addition to all of these upsets, there was also a few crazy endings that will be remembered for a long time. In my opinion, at the very least, this was one of the craziest days in college basketball history and might be the craziest ever. It is highly unlikely that we will ever see all top six teams lose on the same day again.

Gonna be honest I didn’t research every single day in college basketball history but I think it’s safe to say this will never happen again. Also, keep in mind #8 Villanova, who didn’t play on Saturday, lost to UConn earlier in the week.

@@greatkentuckian9032 there should have been a foul on Arkansas near the end as well. It was when one of UK's players was attempting a three (I was busy yesterday and didn't really watch the game, so I didn't know who shot). That would have gave 3 free throws to UK when they were down 72-70. Yes, there's no guarantee all three would have went in, but there was a good chance the game could have been tied at least. (Also, I understand that initially, it didn't look like anything, but with under 30 seconds left, they should at least review it)

I think you are just finally starting to see the overall parity of college basketball get better year by year. Also as a UK fan on a long enough timeline you are starting to see how big of a role just a little bit of continuity from season to season plays. Teams that are able to mix in a couple of sure fire NBA freshmen along with qaulity 2 to 4 year role players are fairing much better vs teams like us that have insanely high turnover year to year. Call really has proven you simply can't do it with just freshmen. His early success clearly shows what a couple of returning role players and sure fire NBA talent can do. Recently those role players have been transferring out on him because he seems to be gaurenteeing playing time to freshman one and dones. This is also the reason most UK fans believe Dillingham and Reed coming off the bench was because he made promises on the recruiting trail that he felt compelled to keep. How else can you explain not starting your two lottery picks.

They've got financial security depending on their talent, but all the most talented players end up going to the bigger cities to play for those teams. Granted, a similar situation is unfolding in college football, where the most talented recruits are going to the teams where they don't have to do that much to win it all, it seems.

Really wish the Southeastern Louisiana vs Nicholls State was on ESPN+ so there was footage to add here. Nicholls, tied for the lead of the Southland, and SLU is in 3rd only 1.5 games back, the other team tied for the lead lost their game so this game becomes massive. Nicholls had a 21 point lead at one point, and the SLU Lions storm back in the last 10 minutes to win it off a put back buzzer beater 83-81. Also it was senior night, also these two are each others biggest rivals.

@@Modrunnermusic I think it started with their win over Kansas. Everybody was shaking hands and Kansas star, Ochai Agbaji, was placed in the health and safety protocols after the game. Kentucky didn't shake Vanderbilt players hands a few days later after beating them. Calipari just stuck with his team waving to the opponents before and after the game (an idea he said he got from South Carolina's and Miss State's coach). I understand if people would say this may be overreach, but Kentucky fans also remember one of their players getting trampled in 2011 by Indiana players after that incredible win by the Hoosiers.
