The Crayfish Flowchart: Options for Cooking and Cleaning Crayfish

Cooking and cleaning crayfish can be a bit intimidating if you haven't done it before. Here I show you some options as well as how you can steam, clean, and freeze the crayfish you catch. As I mention in the video, there are lots of ways to cook and clean crayfish; this is just what I have found works for me.

Thanks for the video. Also in the Pacific NW, and have been interested in getting into crayfish.

Greetings from Hillsboro, OR. Just found your channel searching for crawdad catch & cook vids. I haven't caught crawdads since I was a kid when we went camping on the Nehalem river. I try to go crabbing on the Oregon coast as often as I can and have been thinking about buying some crawdad traps lately to try in local creeks & rivers. Thanks for making a nerdy crawdad video lol. Loved it. 👍💪

Thank you for watching and checking in! With all the rain we've had lately (I'm not sure if you've had a lot in your area too) it might be harder to catch crayfish now, but there's no reason not to start thinking about next season. Good luck if you decide to get back into it! By the way, I have two other crayfish videos posted, just in case you're interested and haven't seen them yet.

@@WesternEclectic yeah we've had quite a bit of rain. I didn't even think that'd be an issue I know it can be with crabbing in the bay after a lot of rain because of reduced salinity the crabs like to go back into the ocean. I guess higher water gives crawdads more space to spread out though. Watched a couple of your other vids. Good stuff 👍

@@WesternEclectic I just read your about page and see you're into clamming & crabbing too. You should make some videos about that. I'm gonna check out your metal detecting vids as someone that loved silver & gold I've always wanted to try metal detecting too. So many things to do, so little time lol.

@@silverbuyer Haha I totally agree, there's just not enough free time for all the hobbies I enjoy! Based on the name "silver buyer" I had a feeling you might be interested in metal detecting too. I have found a few silver coins out metal detecting (my oldest is an 1876 seated liberty dime). They are not worth much, but will always be special to me since I found them. Anyhow, thanks for the suggestion to make a clamming or crabbing video. I'll try give it a shot the next time I go! Cheers!

I'd imagine that freezing the meat in milk will help keep it fresh in the same way it does for crab.

Cool. I hadn't thought of freezing crayfish or crab meat this way. I typically just put the meat in a Ziploc freezer bag and get as much of the air out as possible. I'll have to try the milk idea sometime. Thanks for the tip!

@@WesternEclectic I found out about it on some online forum years ago, but it works really well. I've had crab in the freezer in milk for months and it comes out nearly as good as it went in. It keeps the texture from changing too.

I prefer to put them in boiling water- no spices, and cook like I do crab. Take out of boiling water & put into ice water to keep them from overcooking. Shell them & dip into melted butter or garlic butter. I personally don't like the spices used in the "boils". (Most streams & lakes here in the PNW have crawfish in them.)

I hadn't thought of putting the crayfish into ice water after boiling (or steaming, in my case). I'll try that next time! I got the idea for steaming from someone who works in natural resources out on the coast. She mentioned that for crab, she always steams them instead of boiling. I think either way is fine, but now I steam crab (and crayfish) and it has worked well for me. As for spices, for me it depends: I like all the flavors in a good Cajun boil, but sometime they can mask the flavor of the crayfish, which is already excellent by itself... Anyhow, thanks for watching and commenting.
