Filling the Trap: Tips for Catching Crayfish

After a failed attempt earlier this season, I head back to a local warm-water pond to try trapping red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), which are invasive here in Oregon. What a difference two months can make! It was much better this time around, and in less than two hours I was able to catch about 100 crayfish.
I hope you enjoy the video! If you have any questions or suggestions about trapping or cooking crayfish, I would love to hear from you so please feel free to leave a comment. And if you're wondering about my traps, they are made in Sweden and I ordered them from:
www.trapperarne.com
Please note that I am not affiliated in any way with this site, but I have purchased from them a few times and they were very good. They also have some great information about crayfishing on their site. Good luck if you decide to head out and try trapping crayfish!

Every time we go over a bridge and it looks like slow moving water with large rocks, before I can say anything my wife immediately says, "I don't want to hear it. Tell Mike." It's become a running joke. Because EVERY TIME we go over a bridge and the water looks like good crayfish habitat, I say, "I bet that would be a good place for crayfish."

Hey I love your videos and thanks for doing them, you got me into crayfishing. The John Day river is absolutely full of the invasive Rusty Crayfish right now. Would highly recommend if you're in the area.

Hey nice to hear from you, and I hope you're able to make it this year if you head over. I've added an email address for this channel (you can find it under the "ABOUT" tab), so if you need specific directions just send me an email and I can provide them (although I'm pretty sure you already know how to get there).

In California, you can’t catch fish then use it the traps. But store bought is ok…. By the way, I’ve used the cheap Walmart ($1.00 a pkg.) hot dogs. About 2 dogs per trap…. Works great… cat food works well also….

Hi David, that's a good point. I know that where I grew up in Minnesota (at least back at that time), it was illegal to use "gamefish" such as bluegill for bait, but nongame fish were OK. I'll have to see what the rules are here in Oregon; each state seems to be different. And thanks for the suggestion on cheap hot dogs--at about $1.00 per package it would probably be even cheaper than cat food. I'll give it a try!

Don't forget... the fresh fish bait will attract other wildlife to you. Not an issue if you're near an urban area, but if you're not, stick to the cat food and pop it right before throwing it out. Much smarter and safer. Better to catch a few less crayfish than have something else catch you!

Haha, that's a very good point! My understanding is that there is a decent sized mountain lion population here in my area, especially the more remote places where I head out to trap signal crayfish. So yes, I would prefer not to smell like a mountain lion snack! 😬

Yeah... 100... Braggadocio! HAHA. That's three baits I know work on Signal Crays. I used chicken backs, salmon head and yesterday Seafood cat food. What I do need is more traps. 5 is the max here in WA for recreational. I gotta use 5. Nice vid and I agree w/ the cat food. Go with what works. Some of us don't always have access to fresh fish carcasses either. Cat Food is always on the shelf. 🦞 🐈 🥫

Interesting that you have a trap limit in WA. To my knowledge, we aren't limited on number of crayfish traps here in OR (although for crabbing it's three). You need to bring a friend next time so you could set 10 traps! 😀

Thank you sir, always nice to hear from you and I hope all is well in your world. Yeah, the vertical lines seem to be an artifact from the bright glare off the water. It was pretty bad in some places, but I didn't want to omit that part of the video. Maybe someday I'll actually upgrade my video gear from my little point and shoot camera, or maybe I'll just try not to shoot video looking directly into the glare, haha!

In winter it gets cold enough to freeze, but this time of year it's hot during the day with temperatures around 30 C. And sometimes crayfish get fairly big, especially our native signal crayfish (the ones in this video were a different species, red swamp crayfish). I hope I understood your questions correctly; I used Google translate, haha. 😉
