Trapping Crayfish with Kids: A Great Outdoor Family Activity

I head out to trap some invasive (here in Oregon, at least) red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) with my children. Crayfish trapping is a particularly kid-friendly activity since it is easy, interesting for kids, and doesn't take a big commitment of time or money. In addition, crayfish are great eating!
I don't discuss any details about traps, bait, techniques, etc. since I've already covered that in other videos. Please check them out if you're interested in learning more.
A few people have asked where I bought my Swedish-made traps. I ordered them from:
www.trapperarne.com
Please note that I am not affiliated in any way with this site, but I have purchased from them a few times and they were very good. They also have some great information about crayfishing on their site. For another source of traps, check out:
www.procrayster.com
These are high-quality traps made in the US. You can also check out their KZread channel, @Crayster, for lots of great content.
I hope that helps. Good luck!

Try keeping crawfish alive in 5 gallon buckets of water (chlorene free) and throw handfuls of cornmeal into water (cornmeal irritates their gills).Leave overnight so they can purge their gills of mud and digestive system contents. You will notice next day the water will be very dark muddy change water. Make a crawfish boil quarter redskin new potatoes, cut corn cobs into quarters, throw in red pepper flakes, sea salt, peeled garlic cloves and plenty of Louisiana hot sauce into boiling water. The crawfish will absorb all the flavors and after drained pick out the corn, potatoes and garlic toss onto newspaper and have a feast!

Hi William thanks for the suggestions on this! I have never heard of the cornmeal thing and I will definitely give it a try next time. When I trap signal crayfish from clear, coldwater streams they aren't too dirty, but the red swamp crayfish in this video come from a warmwater pond and they tend to be rather muddy, so it would be great to get them cleaner inside and out.

Hey Marcus, where are you located (sorry if you've told me and I don't remember...)? Anyhow, if you're up for a drive to western Oregon I'd be happy to share the location of this spot with you. I'm usually pretty secretive about my spots, but these crayfish are invasive so I figure the more trappers the better, and I'd be happy to help you out! Anyway, I don't want to post the details publicly but you can send me an email at westerneclecticbusiness@gmail.com and I'll get back to you.

Good luck if you go! Here in Oregon I'm not sure it's even possible to buy crayfish in the stores (at least I've never seen it). We went back to this spot again earlier this week and had another good haul, so I'm thinking that's enough to make crawfish pie this weekend.... But any Cajun way to fix them would sound good to me!

Holy smokes the traps have gone up in price in this recession that isn't really a recession according to those that created it 😂 But I found some at academy sports for $8.00 each... That's a good question! Red swamp crayfish have smaller, thinner claws so unless it's a really big male, I save the tail meat only. But our native signal crayfish have much more substantial claws, so I save the claw meat too when cleaning them. I showed this in another video if you're interested. Thanks for checking in, and take care!

Hey Johny, I'm down in OR so I'm afraid I can't offer much advice on where to go in WA. I suggest you ask around--local fisherman can be a great source of information for finding areas with good crayfish populations. Make sure you check the WA regulations so you know the laws before you go. Good luck!

Thanks for checking in. This was at a pond in Oregon. To my knowledge, Oregon residents don't need a fishing or shellfish license for crayfish. But I think this varies by state, so be sure to check the laws for your location if you decide to go. Good luck!
