The Crash/ What Happened & My Gear/Did It Protect Me

Ойын-сауық

How well did my gear protect me on my most recent motorcycle crash?
Why did I crash while riding my XT250?
Follow up video and update after my crash while riding my Yamaha XT250.
In this video I discuss and show what happened to cause the crash while I was riding the XT250 out in the desert and I also talk about all the gear I was wearing when the crash occurred and if it did a good job of protecting me.
This was by far the worst crash I've experienced and the main injury were my ribs and my left foot. The riding boot did a good job of mitigating the injury to my foot but my jacket didn't provide any protection for my chest.
Luckily I was able to ride out of the desert and now it's just a waiting game to heal up!

I did the same thing at Rampart Range in Colorado. New WR450 with 0 miles. Right from the dealer to trail and less than one mile front tire caught and threw me. Only log on the trail I landed on my ribs and broke three. That was 10 years ago and sometime when I sneeze I still feel it. Chest protector but no rib protection. Glad you OK and very interesting KZread. Great follow-up!

There is an individual that I notice in my immediate area that rides in the summer, a ninja I think, and this individual rides in shorts, tank top, no helmet/gloves/etc, and just has flip flops on. I get it and I wish I had the courage to ride like that but all I ever think about when I see this person is what it's going to be like when that moment comes...hopefully it never does.

ATGATT! I recently added a pair of hockey-gear like compression shorts by BodyProx. They have additional hip, thigh, and, most important to me, tailbone protection incorporated into the stretchy garment. Fits fine under my armored riding pants. I couldn't find a pair of riding pants with built it tailbone protection, but these BodyProx compression shorts with soft armor work great, IMO.

@Precipice Of Grind Thanks! There are a number of manufacturers of similar products, but I think BodyProx is one of the better known brands. Sort of like the "girdle" people wear for sports like football or hockey only much lighter weight and more comfortable. I believe they were designed for mountain bikers, snowboarders, etc. I've always heard that breaking a bone or bones in the tailbone (coccyx) region can be one of the most painful of bone breaks. Thanks again for the great videos and sharing of knowledge!

I bet you were or are sore. I just lowsided my KTM500 around 40mph on Wednesday. Came in too hot for a curve and dumped it with both brakes locked up. My riding boots saved my feet and legs. Especially my right one because the bike was sliding on top of my leg. My watch got chewed up and ripped off my arm and my forearm got skinned up. I think the jacket slid up my arm. The hip, knee, shoulder and elbow pads worked well. No bruises just super sore shoulder and leg on the side I fell. My gloves saved my hands as well. Somehow I did not hit my helmet in the crash. My gear is cheap HWK pants and jacket summer mesh type and it did not rip in the crash. Alpinestars tech 3 motox boots and Battleborn air gloves.

So glad you are mostly ok, sorry you still have a lot of pain. I ride mountain bikes, but not motorcycles, so I don’t know the answer to this: do you think additional riding skills would have allowed you to avoid the accident? Would you consider getting off-road riding instruction? Just wondering. I bruised a kidney falling off my mountain bike - I did go to the doctor and got an MRI and he could see the bruise and that I didn’t rupture it. Still, I was in excruciating pain for a month and could significant pain for two. For me it was a combination of fatigue and a lapse in judgement that lead to a pretty fast fall into a Boulder field. I did get some professional instruction which improved my riding, but I don’t know if it would have prevented my accident or not. So glad you are on the mend and thanks for the video - I learned a lot!

I’ve been wearing the low profile full motor cross type under armor when riding technical close to home stuff. The Tekvest looks interesting. I wonder how that would be for Adv touring longer distances. Great after-action review. Glad you are doing reasonably well after that crash. I also love the InReach. It’s also good if your bike breaks down but you are not injured and don’t need to activate SOS. You can text a friend/spouse with your location asking for a pickup or rescue.

Good information. Glad you're well. Consider shelving the helmet since it impacted the ground. More than likely the helmet area that impacted is compromised and cannot do its job adequately in the future. A few years back I had a get off on the DR650 in a remote NC FS road. Riding too fast for the slick terrain. I landed back first on a football size rock and did some body damage. I spent the next three weeks sleeping on a recliner as laying on a bed was not an option. Way too much pain. So if you have access to a recliner it may be better than straight up on the couch. Took about 3 months to heal enough to ride again. Ugh, don't wanna experience that again.Hope you mend quickly.

Three months ago, I had a similar crash while wearing a protective vest. Upon retrospect, I think this particular vest exacerbated the injury to my ribs. The vest employs discrete flexible but stiff pads. Sternum, left and right side rib cage and back. You said hitting the ground with your arm under your ribs contributed to your rib injury. Likewise the pad itself on my vest focused the impact force on a particular area. I’m considering a vest that either has hard outer shell chest protection or the type of padding the stiffens on impact spreading the impact force out over a greater area. And padding that covers the entire chest not sperate areas. Will be curious as to what chest armor you decide to get and your experience with it.
