@@WhenAllTheWarmthLeavesUs Not an example that most people outside of Brazil would think of, but yeah. He's one of very few real people I can think of who seemed to both be in power *and* to have no love of it. Some of his writing sounds like he absolutely resented any system that would force a person to endure the sort of childhood that he did. He seems to have viewed it as a horrible responsibility that he couldn't abdicate ethically, not a privilege, and by all appearances he was very sincere in what he said. This was a guy who would have been much, much happier as a public intellectual or even a religious leader. Historical figures all have moral strengths and weaknesses, but overall, he's one of those few who seemed to have a strong core set of values that guided his decisions in both his public and his private life. His modern reputation as a national hero is well deserved.

Being the leader of one's whole nation is no different than being the father/mother of one's family. It is a heavy responsibility placed on one's shoulders, for the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, even the needs of oneself. Countless souls count on you for their survival. Acknowledging that would sure make one's mind restless.

It must be even less so you when have to send your closest friends 'into danger and to die' because they happen to be needed and have sworn to serve the crown. The nearest thing I can think of in a real context would be if the King/Queen's personal guards were also really close friends.Or if they had to send an advisor/personal representative thy were close to into personal danger. Most of the time it was probably pretty rare for the King and Queen to have close relationships with more than a tiny handful of their subjects much less those whose duty and sworn obligations to the crown would directly endanger their lives. Personally I think the song is a bit weightier in the context of the story (book). The Heralds are very important (part of the judiciary as well as other things) and the Queen or King (and their Heir) must be Heralds also. In fact in a number of contexts they are considered merely equal to any other Herald and I believe in one of the books it's mentioned that technically any Herald could be elevated to the throne if need be (that is made King in the absence of a qualified and Chosen claimant to the throne).

Seems like somebody has been watching too many movies :/. If one peasant family had a bad harvest the other families would assist, and if the whole village starved the lord would hand out food in times of need. And Peasants were bound to the lord without land ownership, Serfs however owned land. And they were able to feed their families if they had a bad harvest anyway (Its called hunting and foraging)..

A fantastic song, and one that our leaders, even now, should heed. A head of state should look to his people before himself. I dare say in our democracies, they look more to appease the masses to grasp onto their power for fearing that they might lose all they have attained.

A hereditary ruler (king/queen/etc) who cannot be removed except by death or being deposed by force has some significant advantages no elected leader has, though. Their ability to carry out something to completion is not limited by yhe temporal opinion of the general populace who may be entirely ignorant and self serving. Nor is it entirely confined to what a council might have to say, except perhaps in case where their personal power has been eroded entirely. And their legacy is tempered by the whole of their reign not a mere four years which might be good, bad, or neutral overall regardless of what the President does or does not do. A good king is superior to a good 'head of state' in the modern sense and a bad king is far worse. --- By contrast the President has comparatively little power or control. What they say can mean almost nothing without congressional agreement and backing. What little direct power they actually have amounts to things like a veto (that can be overruled), emergency powers (which afaik they cannot grant themselves), and executive orders. Unless things are really screwed up 'commander in chief' doesn't mean that much. They can hire or fire commanders, but unless that person breaks the rules somehow they are unlikely to be in danger of anything more than loss of reputation. The president cannot decide to go to war or not go to war. They are often praised or denigrated for outcomes they have little say in or control of and praised similarly for positive outcomes of things they had no hand in. A good president would in most cases be more likely to be forgotten than remembered. It's a terrible burden to ask a person to bear the burdens of the office with little accolade or reward. ---- In summary many people seem to expect of the President things that would be right to expect of a King, but dubious to expect of the President.

I don't think any of us imagines how difficult and stressing is to be a queen. Many people depend on you and you should know what to do at all times. If you take a bad decision it's technically your fault, but none of the people of the kingdom told you their opinion, so technically it's their fault too. I don't know if I explained it well, but basically I don't like the idea of the queen being alone. Actually, I'm writing a story where my sister and I are princesses but we don't know it because we were separated from our parents at a young age. When we finally discover it, all the people of our kingdom expect us to be like our mother, but we are not since we have never been educated in how to rule a kingdom. So part of the story is of us discovering the ways of being good princesses.

Very likely not, given that very few of us ever hold anywhere near so much power and responsibility or over so many. Although I think much of the same would be common to any good ruler, though perhaps monarchy might be somewhat unique. -- If you haven't read the books that this song goes with, I'd recommend it, for context if nothing else. The Queen here has no choice but to rule basically alone. And early in her reign her hands are kind of tied because she hasn't married and has no biological heir.... -- Hope your writing goes well. Don't forget to read up on history and monarchies. It's okay to be unique, but a good dosage of realism makes for a more enjoyable story. Plus it's good to grasp what you're deviating from and do it on purpose rather than through ignorance.

The stars are very beautiful, above the palace walls, They shine with equal splendour, still above far humbler halls. I watch them from my window, but their bright entrancing glow, Reminds me of the freedom I gave up so long ago. The royal circlet of bright gold rests lightly on my brow, I once thought only of the rights this circlet would endow. But once I took the crown to which I had been schooled and bred, I found it heavy on the heart, though light upon the head. Although I am the head of state, in truth I am the least, The true Queen knows her people fed, before she sits to feast. The good Queen knows her people safe, before she takes her rest, Thinks twice and thrice and yet again, before she makes request. For they are all my children, all, that I swore to defend, It is my duty to become both Queen and trusted friend- And of my children high and low, from beggar to above, The dearest are my Heralds, who return my care with love. The dearest are my Heralds, swift to spring to my command. Who give me aid and fellowship, who always understand That land and people first have needs that I may not deny- So I must send my dearest friends to danger-and to die. A friend, a love, a child-it matters not, I know indeed, That I must sacrifice them all if there should be the need. They know, and they forgive me-doing more than I require, With willing minds and loving hearts go straight to grasp the fire. These tears that burn my eyes are all the tears the Queen can't shed, The tears I weep in silence as I mourn my Heralds dead. Oh gods that dwell beyond the stars, if you can hear my cry- Amd if you have compassion-let me send no more to die!

I adore this song even though it’s so sad. I expected it to be about the cost of freedom, basically complaining that she can’t do what she wants and the are rules. Nothing wrong with that but that is not what the true cost of it is. This song is so beautifully worded and none of the rhyming sounds forced at all. Its so beautiful.

Dear, the song mentions a deity, and even if not, the video creator is only following Hitchens's example in reinterpreting a point in a moral light (the way he argues that all moral people are only moral in so far as they are secular). Anyhow, fire your ESL instructor. He/she should be teaching you writing alongside speaking.

MUCH better to be a girl working in a tavern or washing people's dirty clothes for pennies . In fact it surprises me how so few queens and princesses didn't just change professions, so to speak, for the much humbler, ugly ,violent and miserable life of peasant woman with six children to feed and not enough food, , so terrible does it seem life was for these poor souls....

You should read the Arrows of the Queen trilogy, by Mercedes Lackey and also By the Sword. But I will give you a little backgrount into THIS Queen. first, she saw her father murdered on the battlefield (an assasin paid for by a couple of his own lords and guild masters), then her first husband tryed to have HER murdered so that he could take the crown ( not possible under Valdemar law, the monarch MUST be a Herald) then the power hungry prince of a neighbouring country sent an agent to turn her daughter into a royal brat, this was stopped by the new Queens own Herald, and the girl was Chosen by a Companion (a pure white spirit horse given flesh) and became a Herald. Then the prince tried to "marry" the princess killing his own father and laying the blame on two diplomats, killing one and torturing and raping the other, later she faught his army on the battlefield NO NOT SAFE IN THE PALACE WHLE OTHERS FAUGHT AND DIED< SHE WAS THERE SWORD IN HAND! the othe songs are Battle Dawn and Kerowyns Ride. Oh and in Valdemar even the poorest children get a free education and a free meal. Wont say your wrong about most queens, but Selany is one of the exeptions that prove the rule.

What??? Catholicism is not just for the downtrodden. It has followers from all stations in life. "It has no kings until the appointed time" where did you get that? Also not sure how that comment explains your reasons for calling Him a Dead God. What god do you claim is living?

  • @miaththered

The word him is not a proper noun. Catholicism is a branch of a greater religious theology, Christianity, which is at its core, a religion of the destitute. Yeshua died, therefore, the worship of him is one of a God who died. Thus, a dead God.

Our "books" say that He not only died but also rose from the dead which would make Him a living God. Also my capitalization of him is correct because of Reverential Capitalization en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverential_capitalization
