Battle Dawn- Mercedes Lackey

Музыка

I was bored and decided to make this, plus I needed an excuse to throw pictures together in video format. All images belong to their respective owners. The lyrics were written by Mercedes Lackey and Debra F. Sanders, and the vocals were done by Shandeen O'Neill.

    On second (er, twelfth?) listening, I realize you can conclude this much just from 0:04 - 0:21, before the lyrics even begin. Those reed pipes. Those angry reed pipes... From at least one other unrelated fantasy series, it seems this is the standard instrument on which for an army to play the tune that tells the enemy: "Y'all done fucked up now. Just FYI, we are in *no* kind of mood for taking prisoners today." 😮

    This must be Selenay just before the battle with Ancar. He had killed Herald Kris, and Queen's Own Herald Talia had nearly been tortured to death before she knew her message got through and she attempted suicide by severe sedative overdose. They managed to pull her to safety, but she was still very battered. Everybody thought she wouldn't pull through because of her wounds. The position of Queens Own is meant for a guiding friend and a place to find emotional support. Now, you love your Queen and the Queen's best friend is the Queen's Own. The Heralds are well known for being unable to resist a call for help. Now do you see why Selenay would cheerfully go charging in the vanguard or set Ancar on fire to burn him alive - slowly?

    It's been decades since I read that trilogy but on reading your comment, I am reminded how angry the Valdemaran forces were in the book. While for the regular army, it was general 'us vs them' mentality of an army, but for the heralds with the queen it was far more personal as they all knew the Queen's Own, Talia.

  • @sarahmatteson4688

    @sarahmatteson4688

    5 жыл бұрын

    The song is from the three book series "The Heralds of Valdemar", the first book is named "Arrows of the Queen" by Mercedes Lackey. The song was written from Queen Selenay's perspective after discovering that her 'Queens Own'; Herald Talia, closest and most trusted advisor/confidant to the Queen; had been tortured and raped repeatedly by the traitor King Ancar's orders after going there with her partner Herald Kris to conduct a marriage proposal for the Queens daughter Elspeth. When they retrieved Talia from the Kings guards, they discovered her feet had been shattered as well as numerous other bones and a handprint had been seared into her flesh by magic. And since Talia was an Empath with incredible strength, the mental trauma severely outweighed the physical torture due to her being forced to listen and feel their pleasure toward her pain. Selenay was furious that they'd brutalized her much-beloved Herald and murdered her cousin Kris in cold blood, and immediately summoned as much force as she could to stamp out Ancar's forces before he could take her Kingdom by surprise. Because she was also a Herald while being Queen, she was forced to ignore Talia's suffering until after the battle instead of going into the Vanguard herself and slitting every throat she came across like she desperately wanted to. The army she gathered was INCREDIBLY angry with what had befallen Herald Talia (poor kid was loved by literally EVERYONE she met in Valdemar) and sent word to literally every Herald they could and summoned every man that could hold either a bow or sword or wield a Mage-Gift or Heraldic Gift to battle. Within a fortnight Selenay had almost three thousand men and women ready to wreck the Kingdom that had hurt Talia and tried to usurp their Monarch. The whole series itself is a fantastic read, 9000/10 would definitely recommend. Especially if your into Fantasy and Kingdom stories like me.

Evil and their slaves should always be hunted down and their head severed from their body in the name of the light . Evil is a corruption that spread like the plagues twisting the minds of men binding them to darkness stripping them of their souls making zombies of men. A soul can only reproduce with another soul born of the same light of gods essence marked by paleness .Two halves giving themselves willingly to each other. Christians say their is only one god and this means alien souls are a deception and do not exist and alien people are no different then the common beasts of the forests. A single word in the old tongue. A word influenced by Christianity used to describe the alien races, blacks, browns, Asians another is to do with not having divine essence like the common beasts of the forests.

    In case anyone is wondering about the line ‘it’s just as well i’m not the one who calls the storm of fire’ is a general reference to FireStarting as a magical gift, but probably a specific reference to Lavan Firestorm from ‘Brightly Burning’ (another Valdemar book). He wins an earlier war with Karse an earns the appellation ‘Firestorm’ by unleashing his gift and incinerating the opposing army, an entire forest, and unfortunately himself.

    @@jnharton I...Don't know if it was clear what I was saying, or what you're saying? I feel like there's a disconnect. Let me try to restate my point: Lavan *is* the historically notable example of a powerful Firestarter, but this song is specifically about the battle between Valdemar and Hardorn, from Selenay's perspective. Griffon destroyed a lot of Ancar's summoned demons, and also targeted their primary mage. I don't think he compared to Lavan in terms of power, but he was still critical to Valdemar's survival that day. I think the line in the song specifically references Griffon and his gift to call down the fire; and how Selenay is glad she doesn't have that gift because she'd use it aggressively, perhaps *too* aggressively.

    I’m now imagining the villain, slightly shorter then most, kinda lean yet handsome, pale, blond with short hair, with bright almost whitish blue eyes, and wearing Roman military gear with the muscle cuirass and golden wreath upon his head. Possessed of an infectious charisma, and can go from a soft spoken, sophisticated voice to loud and commanding, yet retaining grace all the same, ruthless, deviously cunning and intelligent, impeccable manners and seemingly always calm, collected and in control, taking insults towards his character, even the most vicious insults, seemingly in jest and amusement. Even when the tide is against him, he is seemingly possessed of a calm, almost jovial nature. He is also cruel, sadistic and possessed of a complete and utter belief in his superiority, so much so that attacks on his character and his supposed superiority do not phase, for what would a living God have to care about petty insults? Even with the army of the Queen upon his door, he remains calm, even facing death he has no fear, for tormenting this once noble, loving, calm, merciful and kind soul, and reducing her into a rage filled shell, consumed with the need for revenge, for killing but one insignificant Herald, is such an exquisite amusement to him. He has no fear or her, or her pathetic army of barbarians, for he know he will win, she does not know what he has in store for her and her army of halfwits and goatswilling inbred swine, and the mortified look of pathetic despair, indignation and rage that will be cast upon her beautiful face when he wins will be a joyful spectacle to witness. And if she does win, by some miracle, he’ll never give her the satisfaction of seeing himself beg, but will merely mock her for how she failed to save her beloved friend. And if this Queen saves him to torture him, then seeing her reduced to even more of a shell of her former self, and becoming the very thing she despised, will make the pain, even in Hell, so much more worth it. For to make even the Demons in Hell disgusted with him, is an achievement not granted to many, and only worthy of someone who was born with the Devil in him, and who was the chosen of Hell itself.

    Yes and yes, this song brought me back to my first playthrough where I romanced Solas and had a bestie thing going with Cassandra. This song captures exactly how I feel Cassandra would've felt watching my inquisitor getting her heart broken by solas' betrayal

    @@redhunter8731 Cousland version I must contain my anger, or I won't control my power- But Maker! How long I've waited just to see this very hour! It's just as well I'm not the one who calls the storm of fire--- Or I would turn this battle plain into your funeral pyre! Wynne all say I must not hate--- but I will not pretend. I saw the wreck you made of them, my nephew and my sister--- The scars you left in flesh and soul will be so slow to fade--- Oh, would I had your coward heart beneath my naked blade! I must control my rage, or lose ability to plan, I must direct the fight from here, not charging in the van. As you will likewise do, no doubt, for all that you are cruel And revel in shed blood and pain, I think you are no fool. But in the name of sacred Andraste, you're all that I despise, Who stole by treachery my arl as your prize--- My family, my people, my Ferelden . All, you plotted to despoil--- By tricks that only miracles enabled us to foil. I must control my fury or let slip all that I've sought- But vengeance would not be enough for all the grief you've wrought. Maker grant this day you fall beneath the steel of me and mine--- And drink full deeply of defeat, that cold and bitter wine. The griffon is on my chest, my naked blade within my hand. My companions like an eager hound lie waiting my command. With how you tortured, killed and lied revealed to them this day--- By all the stars that ever shone, By the Maker, by Theirin's blood For my parents and my Cousland 's Own--- I swear that you will pay! Quarantine make me crazy

    I don't know the actual story but I just listened to The Cost of The Crown and I'm imagining this lady is the younger sister or protector of that queen, her rage barely kept in check by the one she loves and serves

    So the one singing is actually the queen. Her best friend and another of her "heralds" (special warriors with magic powers) were sent to broker a marriage treaty with a neighboring kingdom for her daughter. Instead Prince Ancar usurps the throne, kills one of the heralds and tortures, rapes, and mutilates the other. They are able to rescue the living one (the queens best friend) who warns them that war has been declared and Queen Selenay is now standing on the field of battle as Ancar's forces come to try to capture or kill her and her daughter.

    If you don't know the story, I definitely recommend reading it! The story sung here is part of the Valdemar mega-series, by Mercedes Lackey. It references events from the 3rd book of the Arrows of the Queen trilogy (1. Arrows of the Queen, 2. Arrow's Flight, and 3. Arrows Fall). The queen singing here and the queen in Cost of the Crown are actually the same queen, from different points in her reign. She's also got a couple other songs. Additionally, there's a lot more songs for the Valdemar universe as well, referencing other characters and events.
