The 2023 C8 Corvette Z06 breaks all the rules you thought you know.
1. What's faster, a car with more or less power?
2. What's more powerful, a large supercharged engine, or a smaller naturally aspirated engine?
3. What has a wider, flatter torque curve: a supercharged engine, or a high revving naturally aspirated engine?
4. What uses less fuel, a car that makes more, or less power?
Compared to the C7 Z06, the C8 Z06 is an improvement in every way, and yet on paper you might not see why. It's a stunning feat of engineering, and a masterclass in supercar design. What an absolute joy to drive!

yup. but i must say i always loved the whole "front engine car taunting the exotics" vibe corvettes had. imagine being beat in your high tech mid engine car by some front engined pushrod v8 neanderthal with a goddamn LEAF SPRING IN THE BACK and an interior straight out of an 80s kia. i know all that stuff was engineered too, no question, but it was always funny to me.

It's an amazing price for what it is, up there in performance with the exotics no argument, but the Corvette used to be at the upper end of an 'everyman car' as the slightly higher-tech daddy to the Firebird and Camaro. Granted this is a Z06 but at $166K they've certainly shifted the market segment where the car is aimed from where it once was. I always loved the fact that my LS1 Camaro could hang on the track with euro-spec M3 costing more than twice as much - and I think the Vette still does this today but it's now competing in a different segment than it once did. I'm not complaining - it's a bargain for what you get and an amazing car - it's just changed from being the higher end of sports car into the bottom end of exotic in both pricing and performance.

I was impressed by all the choices GM made in the C8 Z06, but when Jason talked about engine efficiency and the oil bath, I was blown away by the GM engineers really going the extra mile in this engine design. This is how big companies should compete, by leveraging their economies of scale to put more resources into R&D.

Harley and GM both went way above and beyond for American companies, with the new Corvette and the new Pan America motorcycle by Harley. The amount of new innovations that have never been used by any American companies is really amazing. Harley was the first motorcycle in history to use hydraulic lifters on an adventure bike, so no valve adjustments, as well as automotic ride height that adjusts when you come to a stop, so you don't tip over on your motorcycle. The Harley Pan America engine is really a masterpiece of engineering, and people who ride say there's not much like it on the road, and for an American motorcycle engine it's more advanced than anything that has ever been made. And the Corvette engine, they literally used every possible technology available to make the engine, they didn't save money and try to cut costs, they did every innovation possible, and it's truly a masterpiece.

That's not "going the extra mile", it's the obvious result of not using a mechanically driven supercharger. It would be interesting to compare efficiency to highest-output naturally aspirated C7 engine.

This has to be one of the biggest ICE updates I've seen for over a decade (for a mass produced car). Just the vacuum/oil sealed system for each pair of cylinders is amazing. Not only does that create less turbulent air, but the vacuum should reduce the amount of foam and also drastically cut the likelihood of oil starvation from G forces. It also slashes the time the oil takes to make it's way around the passages. Congrats to Chevy for documenting and making this information available. This is by far the most engineered production US engine I've ever seen. WOW!

I was same, thought GM made kind of crappy products, so I was looking at getting a Porsche like my brother but for the money the C7 was impossible to ignore. After doing my homework I bought a C7 Z51 due to its impressive tech. The mag-ride suspension and PTM (traction control) is NASA level stuff. Plus GM finally made a nice interior with high quality materials - leather, suede, carbon. The Corvette team is a bunch of race engineers given a budget way beyond your typical GM beam counter thus in my mind it’s almost a separate company building a one-off machine.

I like the Camaro ZL1 1LE and the C5 and above Corvettes for performance reasons. It seems that GM know what they're doing when it comes to V8 muscle. Even a Camaro SS 1LE gives a Vette a run for it's money. It's funny that GM stopped innovating the Camaro after they realized it was too fast around the track. They almost didn't release the ZL1 1LE for that reason. They hated having a Camaro beat their C7 line up but they needed something to gain buyers from the Ford and Dodge.

The base c8 looks like a cheap kit car to me. Now, the c8 z06 does look better because of the wide body, and of course, going to the new engine is pretty awesome. The question is, will the new z06 engine be as reliable, only time will tell. Because from what I've seen the ford motor dont hold the power that the chevy motors hold. Reason why the LS plat form is so big in the car community.

except for the fact gm totally screwed the engine. throttle body doesn't even open all the way even at "wide open throttle" which is because it has a single in tank fuel pump, instead of two like it should, so it is incapable of providing enough fuel for the amount of air the engine is capable of flowing at true wide open throttle. if it simply had a second fuel pump and was tuned to have the TB fully open, it would make north of 700hp without any other mods. sadly the ECUs are locked which makes this impossible for an aftermarket tuner to do at this time. On top of that numerous owers are having engines blow at under 1000 miles because they are not being informed on the proper break in procedure for this engine. even more owners whos engines have not blown, are developing a mysterious ticking sound, and although GM has acknowledged this is definitely an issue, says they won't replace these engines till they blow. whats more is the dct's are likely going to be failing at low miles as well, seeing as dct filters are clogging way before GM requires a dct service, due to the fact that the internals of the transmission have not been properly polished/ finished, causing an abnormal amount of particulates to exist inside the trans, in turn causing the filters to clog. from a cost/performance perspective these are fantastic cars. i love corvettes and this is probably the coolest one ever made. sadly they are shaping up to also be some of the least reliable ones ever made as well. look up the youtube "vette titans". hes an ex- gm engineer and a c8z owner. hes been discovering/ documenting a lot of these issues which the majority pf the corvette community wants to ignore because of their blind love of the car

8:30. Seeing the details provided by Chevrolet, regarding their exact design specifications. This is a radical departure from the standard of withholding certain design specs, they actually provide details such as the exact thickness of each of the piston rings, and provide figures for weight in comparison to old parts. Those pistons are the slimmest, most low profile pistons I've ever seen. This is what consumers have been wanting all along, transparency about the engineering. This is also the biggest accomplishment of any engine in GM's history, because of how reliable and durable the new engine is. Ford and Chrysler have had remarkably consistent engine failures with all their new generation engines, mainly with their 4 and 6 cylinders.

Chevy really hit it out the park with this, hope its reliable enough when put on track, and hope they do something about the steering feedback a bit since heard its vague (historically last 2 generation was initially problem too, but in each case improved on later), but for most part if this ends up last ICE Corvette what a finale. Solid daily drivable chassi, with predictable handling while being mid engine which in itself is rare feat, and V8 GM version of what made stuff like the S2000 a legend, amazing. I think the really cool thing about the new Corvette is where it doesn't betray the history of the car, but instead of being all and only about tradition its very forward looking. Sure Corvettes have always had new technology but i think this differs a lot in sense it tears the Corvette a bit away (but not too far as to alienate) from the old Country Club stereotype about them, while adding appeal to much younger and or diverse crowd. Its a bit of a spaceship. I will stop gushing but i love that this ended up being how the Corvette turned out, i'd like to think Duntov is saluting the team behind this, it finally [curse word] happened.

My first four cars had manual transmissions. But if you're born today that might be a very different story. I drive a Model 3 Performance and I'm yet to have a passenger that doesn't burst into laughter from the acceleration. If you grow up with it, it may seem better in many ways. When engines went from steam to gasoline, a lot of folks didn't like the change "loud, slow, smelly, etc." So I think a lot of it is what you know. You make it seem like it's all benefits for OHC and flat plane over push rod cross plane. What's the weight per volume of each? OHC motors are notoriously heavier compared to push rods and don't develop anywhere near the low end torque. The weight also sits much higher, which makes the car's center of gravity higher. Flat plane motors also have shorter lifespans, Ford lost a lot of money on the voodoo in the gt350's because they were breaking down before their power train warranty was up often enough to be a legitimate issue, which is probably a huge factor in the gt350's short production life. I think GM has set themselves up to learn this lesson the hard way as well. Maintenance is also generally speaking a lot simpler on push rod cross plane motors. And I may be misremembering, but aren't OHC motors harder to keep cool comparatively? I'm sure there is a laundry list of other negatives in choosing this style of motor over the old one. Much of the other technology *could* have been implemented on the older one too. I'm not trying to say it's not an impressive engine, it just seems like all of the reviews I've seen regarding this are positing that it's all advantages with zero drawbacks. And motors still take TIME to increase revolution speeds. While it's making more horsepower at higher rpm, at equivalent speeds it's glaringly weaker, and it still takes time to get there, and clutch dumps at higher rpm have been more damaging to drive trains in my limited experience. Are my concerns unjustified?

It always makes me laugh when people call the 6.2 a "big engine." It is physically smaller and lighter than many engines with half the displacement. It is smaller and lighter than the 5.0 Coyote engine from Ford, it is smaller and lighter than the 3.0 TTV6 that Nissan puts in the new Z, all while making more horsepower across the entire powerband. There is a reason the LS swap is ubiquitous, the old pushrod 6.2 is simply the most displacement and torque you can get out of a tiny package.

About 200 pounds more! The C7 Z has a better power to weight ratio, and will accelerate better past a launch because of its higher torque figure! Yes, it had cup 2R’s, but cup 2 R’s will actually be worse then the standard Michelin pilot sports if they don’t get up to performance temp, which they didn’t. Those times would easily be a couple seconds quicker in the right conditions. As well, the C8Z is NA. The lap times would only increase lap after lap, which is opposite of the C7Z.

@@CanadianSpeedster Randy was pushing that C8 pretty hard.. I imagine it had enough heat in the tires to set a pretty fast lap. Also we have to take into account that it was cold, so the C8 had the advantage of the air being more dense so it was making more than 670 horsepower, im sure the horsepower bump made up for some of the lacking tire temps.

@@fuze3522 C8 had more of a disadvantage being at higher elevation to be honest. At the end of the day the conditions were not good. We all know track temperature plays one of the largest rolls. I notice a difference just from cloudy days vs sunny days, never mind when it’s very cool out. Yes Randy was pushing it hard, but only as hard as him or anyone can when the conditions aren’t great.

@@CanadianSpeedster Well its still impressive to me the C7’s time. An 8 year old sports car can hold a candle to today’s mid engined supercars. C7 was truly a fantastic chassis and the most we can get out of front engined tech. And I’m excited to see the Hypercars that the ZR1 and Zora will be.

@@fuze3522 The C7Z’s were great, I love mine and it will never be sold Every second on a low time track is a huge leap forward. Once you get to this type of performance it starts to slow down with massive achievements.

I know I'm probably going to get lots of hate, but as a Corvette superfan for more than 30 years, I still think the C7 ZR1 is the more superior car, with my all time personal favorite being the C6 ZR1. Nothing beats a good ol' pushrod V8 slapped with a supercharger with a cross-plane crankshaft. The grunty sound when idle, the wild torque it generates and the thrill, speed and sound of that supercharger whine has so much more to it, especially with a manual transmission.

Omar I own a C7 Z06 manual and a C8 HTC Z51 and the C7 is hard to hook up and control it just wants to burn up the tires in all the gears but the C8 puts it to the ground immediately. I would assume the C8 Z06 does also. I love both cars but they are totally different beasts.

Breaks all the rules including 50 to 100k markups over MSRP and have only made 1200 z06 Corvettes In a year.. This is not a car for the middle class it's only a car for the extremely rich who don't mind overpaying on an item and not getting a Porsche..

You can tell that you are genuinely chuffed at the performance, and just the sheer pleasure of driving this high revving natmo V8 😁 The smiles say there's no hiding how thrilled you are with the loud pedal controlled 'music' - so addictive ! 😄
