Over time I've realised: The only reason they hid him from the spotlight ... is because he was *Too powerful*

I believe Bertram was a plot device character just for the one episode. The fact that he was just a Duke repaint with Smudger’s face and never got a large scale model like the other narrow-gauge engines makes it feel like he was never supposed to appear again. It is possible Bertram was going to appear regularly in the show, but unfortunately any questions fans had about Bertram are now apart of the pile of mysteries only certain people who worked on the show have the answers to, but it’s fun to wonder! Nice video!

Bertram is the type of guy to face head on with Alf and to come out unscathed

Maybe they had a bigger role for him originally, seeing as he has so many toys.

I think there’s no way they didn’t; I mean a toy in basically every range? A pretty killer bit of lore?? It seems like they were sitting on a gold mine with this dude 😅

I'm calling it right here, right now. In 2025 we're going to see someone from the fan film community take this character and make a five-part miniseries about him that has no business being as good as it is. Bonus points if they incorporate Magic Railroad lore and turn him into train John Constantine.

A crack idea I had is that Bertram is just Duke doing a little trolling, and I personally find it hilarious.

Headcanon on Bertram: In the TV Series canon during the earliest days of the MSR he arrived as it’s #5 with Duke and Smudger being it’s #s 1 and 2 and there also being the original #s 3 and 4 before Falcon and Stuart (I also headcanon Duncan worked there as it’s #6 explaining why we saw him in Bulldog) where he mainly worked at the mine shunting and taking trains there and standard gauge engines from Sodor Tramways (the Great Waterton line) would work there too (explaining the scrapped standard gauge engines in his episode), and when the MSR was starting to decline later on Bertram was left withdrawn and abandoned at the mine and stayed there for years before Toby showed up.

Ok my theory on why Bertram doesn't speak is that he's a mute. After not speaking for what seems like years he probably lost voice. It's possible

Although Bertram was only in one episode I really appreciated that we were able to see again the "Smudger" face. For me it was very recognizable that they used Duke and put smiling Smudger face on it but somehow because of season 4 I was able to appreciate much that technically new engine :3 And yea I also wish we could see more of him in the episodes of Thomas and fiends. Besides... not long ago I saw a fan made movie about Bertram where he was directly made from Smudger, assuring us, that this is actually the same engine, but rebuilt and I really liked the idea.

Its truly a shame Bertram didnt speak at all, just the nickname "The Old Warrior" gives him a lot of potential so its a pity we literally got nothing

I love some of the fandom take on Bertram mmbut most tend to make him talk in the 3rd person and have a elegant voice like a knight/super hero like "i shall slay thy" or "here i come to say the day!" I really want to do a story with fearless freddie and burtrum called the fearless and the warrior or soemthing

Bertram is a cool character

Maybe Bertrum his personality is a mix of Duke's and Smudger's ? That would be a special combination though. 🙃

A wise engine but a cocky one. Hmm . Ah so has the knowledge on topics but doesn't have the polite talking skills to match . I.e. you know what you are talking about but lack the skills to express in a way which make people Want to listen to your advice.

While coming up with a comic series sequel to Magic Railroad I always had it in mind that Bertram was Duke's younger brother.

One thing about this episode that has bugged me though the scenes that see the mine reopened show rheneas and skarloey with Bertram and the only way that they would be able to get there would be if they reopened part of the old mid sodor from rheneas station all the way to the old mine lots of missed potential in story lines there.

I think there’s a good chance he may have known Proteus. It’s revealed in the official Thomas and friends TCC “Boo Boo Choo Choo” video that the yellow engine was owned by a mining company as well, so for all, we know, they may have worked at the same location before Proteus mysteriously disappeared? (or fell off a bridge if you believe the theory.)

Some would say the MSR's Albert fell off the old iron bridge but then that's questionable because I thought the Skarloey Railway and Mid Sodor Railway never were connected. Likewise that engine from Duncan Gets Spooked had Skarloey's model that's why it was probably his brother Fletcher

It’s funny because something called a “colossal conundrum” just started today in a game I play and this video has conundrum in the title

I finally scooped up a wooden railway Bertram, both the tank engine design and the tender design

Ok that huge burp you did at the end of the video was hilarious

I don’t think this is Canon, but it’s worth knowing if the wooden railway claims that he pulls scrap trains

When I was a kid I always thought that Bertram's quarry and Boulder's quarry were one in the same, and when Toby found it, that's when the restorations began, and the reason we never saw Bertram again was because, as we all know, the mine is haunted asf. But of course now I've done my research and they are on two separate parts of the island, apparently. Kind of a missed opportunity, if you ask me.

Want to say that the L on Wooden Railway Bertram is actually the shading of his nameplate, one promotional picture of Bertram (Edit: The one you use for the thumbnail) hides his tender and messes up his nameplate where the shadow grading on the side and bottom are more pronounced than the face

If they were going to repaint dukes model and give him smudger's face then they should have made a second model of Duke so that way one could be used as Bertram

iirc, someone figured out that the "L" on the toys is a misinterpretation of a shadow his nameplate casts on one stock image.
