He began in an innocuous position on the radio with Little League players. He then began announcing all sorts of sports events, including boxing, the Olympics, and football. He climbed up the ranks to become a monumental figure and always worked to protect his place. Howard’s policy of “telling it like it is” earned him enemies. Not all of his broadcasters or peers in the sports world had kind things to say about him.
There were also fans, athletes, and celebrities who appreciated his candor and wit. He supported and was close with legendary boxer Muhammed Ali. He also interviewed and was forced to announce the death of the Beatles legend John Lennon. Whatever anyone said about him, no one could call him boring. He changed the sports broadcasting world via his place on MNF or Monday Night Football.
Viewers didn’t just tune in to see the game anymore. They tuned in to see the hilarious exchanges between him and his co-anchors. They always wondered what he’d say next.
Howard wasn’t afraid to say anything. Did it make the game more entertaining? Did it seem perfectly timed? He’d let it out. That served him well until he said something during a football game that many thought went too far. He came up with a nickname for one of the players that caused one of the biggest stirs in sports broadcasting history.

As far as Howard's coment ,I think it was totally blown out of proportion for the sake of furthering a cause or political view. I was watching that game, and when he made the comment, I thought to myself and said to my father, they'll be hell to pay over that comment.

I honestly believe he meant it as a plain old comment. Calling his own grandchildren little monkeys may have slipped into his professional dialogue. He made his living being obnoxious not a bigot. For those of us who remember, what a voice! Unmistakable!

Back in the early 60's South of Yoakum, Texas was a ranch belonging to Hugh Benbow. Beside oil and cattle Hugh Benbow was a boxing promoter. His man was Cleave Big Cat Williams who was going to fight Caches Clay (Mohmmad Ali) in his later years. The channel 13 ABC TV station out of Houston was down there doing a feature on the upcoming fight in the Astro Dome. I was about 11 years old walking outside the sparing barn looking at the duck pond. This man had a microphone and getting some 'B' roll footage. He came up to me and ask me some question, nothing pertaining to boxing. I has him his name. He said Howard Cosell. At that time the name didn't mean anything to me, never the less I did meet someone of importance.

Howard may have been arrogant, but he was very good at what he did. No one can take that away from him. Rest in peace, Howard. You were a great man. 😊😊😊❤❤❤

I recall as a kid in the mid to late 70s tuning in to Monday Nite Football .. I wasn’t that into the Monday Nite game but I absolutely loved halftime .. They would show the highlights from Sundays games and Cosell would do the play by play .. It was a joy to listen to .. I guess that’s when he got in trouble for the “ LOOK AT THE MONKEY !!! “ comment .. I agree with the opinion that he was obnoxious but not ever racist ..

Great video. I enjoyed Howard and thought he was great at his craft. I do remember a baseball game he was broadcasting for ABC and either at start or during the game a batboy got access to a live mic and said something like “Howard, the whole state of Texas hates your guts. “You could hear it plain as day and Howard heard it as well. Think it was a Rangers game.

The fact that "down goes Frazier x3" is one of the *most quoted lines in sports broadcasting history pretty much says all there is to know about Society in general.

Cosell told it like it was? He changed his last name(real last name Cochell),wore a hairpiece and lied about his age (Claimed to be born in 1920 but was born in 1918). Dick Young had him pegged right from the start .

Cosell was plenty entertaining, and no doubt Ali gave Cosell a big leg up. The monkey comment seems innocent and since the player came to Cosell's defense proves that. But when you have a big name and are well known, criticism for seemingly innocent things comes with the territory. It's part of the deal of having a big name.

@@davidcarbone3385 Many members of the current generation compare present values and actions without taking into account the society in which they make a judgment. An example is watching a boxing match that occurred in the 50s or 60s where a referee allows the boxer to absorb greater punishment than is the norm today. These "fans" would like the referee jailed and stripped of his certification. President Theodore Roosevelt was a big game hunter, an explorer, a rancher, a deputy, a lawyer, an author of 40 books, and as intelligent as Jefferson. If one judges our youngest-ever president with today's norms, perhaps he wouldn't have the appeal that he had...the most popular person of his era! Folks in the spotlight are ripe for folks to put them under a microscope! It is what it is!

Though I never had much use for Cosell, this whole incident was, and still is, much ado about nothing. Thin-skinned folks looking to be offended, even in 1983. Sheesh.
