The Satanic villain of The Conjuring 3 was not always the heartless occultist seen in the movie...

Isla Kastner, also known as The Occultist or The Malnourished Lady, is the human devil summoner that plagued Brookfield, Connecticut and the surrounding area in The Conjuring: The DEVIL Made Me Do. Although she has only appeared in one movie, small details presented in the film, along with cultural context, give us a good idea of the story of her life. Although she is the main antagonist, many fans know very little about her.
In this video, I'll be analyzing everything we know about Isla, from her youth as the secretive daughter of a priest, where she might have gone during the years she disappeared and her death at the hands of a hellish entity.
Unlike previous Conjuring movie villains, her lore is not really connected to the demonic spellbook, The Lesser Key of Solomon, but more based on the Italian concept of Stregheria. Stregheria doesn't offer the same level of detail as other sources of lore, but her character can be tied into the cultural movement around cults in the 1980s, so that will be part of the analysis as well.

About Horror History
Horror History is a series that analyses specific characters, monsters, places or events in the fictional worlds of your favorite horror franchises.
About The Conjuring: The DEVIL Made Me Do It
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

Very true but the moment Father Kastner was at the bottom of the stairs when Lauraine met him, there was an ominous feeling. If you're intuitive you knew this meant right away that he is involved in the very crimes they are investigating.

I like the idea that Isla was afraid of her own undoing and failure to finish the curse, and the demon chose to appear as her for that reason. TBH, I've heard the Warrens made a lot of stuff up and they did make money from certain cases, at least that is what I read. One is the real story of the Conjuring, absolute baloney the film is, nothing like the real story. Also, the family ended up getting pretty peeved off by the Warrens.

The Conjuring 3 was mediocre compared to some of the first entries into the series but by God, the Demon scene gave me legitimate goosebumps. Silence with only the steps as a sign of its arrival, a face that's the definition of the uncanny valley, dispatching her with a single move of its hand. It perfectly encapsulated the nature of the evil that the characters face through these movies. Powerful entities that care little for others as long as they get what they want and they win in some way or another every time, the Warrens being able only to contain them for a little while.

Yeah, I feel like certain things could’ve been done better, but I do feel they emphasized less on family, and more on love like romance or intimate bonds like a spouse. It was warded off by love, it went after a kid through his girlfriend, and got ammunition through his insecurities about his relationship, so it makes sense thematically. But the fact that it was so different from the other Conjuring Movies, as well as emphasizing on something that’s seen as admittedly more sappy, may’ve taken away from the whole horror, if that makes sense. But they did compensate in the scary moments, it just wasn’t enough, IMO. That’s just my opinion, though, I’m not trying to say it’s good or bad. Edit: Though I do wish they kept the rules consistent. The dust blowing, the possession of corpses, etcetera, I feel it was too much rule flexing, IMO. Effective filmography, but lore wise it was pushing it.

He was so worried about the occult, but not worried about owning up to having a child and giving her as good a life as possible in that situation . I knew a man who always brought homeless people in to help them. It turns out he was molesting his daughters. Some people get so caught up in these outward things and don’t focus on just being a decent human being to the people who most heavily rely on him. The man I knew was so into praise for helping the homeless, but was an actual monster behind closed doors. This priest was too wrapped up in studying the Occult, and not in actually taking care of his kid.

It should be noted Tobi isn't the demon's real name that's just what the caracters refer him as. His real name is Asmodius one of the Princes of Hell which ties Next of Kin to the Franchise as that's what they called the demon in it. Although if you ask me it might be that Next of Kin is some form of requel that avoids Ghost Dimension (and possibly Marked ones with the portals and time travel stuff also being in it) so Toby never got his physical body. Although if you ask me, those portals might do more than time travel but also cross the multiverse into other universes which would explain where Tobi been in the first four movies and why in Ghost Dimension Katie and Kristie was trained in the paranormal and supposedly died in the fire instead of surviving it. I think it ties Marked Ones as well since we see Katie and Kristie as children with black eyes and the ending Hector time traveling to the ending of the first movie.

*SPOILER ALERT*⚠️ Man, I wish we could discuss personally about this lesson before you put the video... Coz there are many things you didn't know about. I requested cz last time on the malthus or valak one, that make one on Isla and include the comics part.. but maybe, he didn't see that Comment. Ok so, DC released a comic series on The Conjuring as The Conjuring : The Lover, explaining that it's all about the Lover part of the curse, which Isla targeted much before the child, David. This comic goes with the story of Jessica, and how she died due to the curse. So, DEFINITELY, Jessica is the Lover. In the last comic, issue 5 of the series, there is the backstory of Isla set in west Germany, 1951, matten abbey, near czechoslovakian border. Here, Isla worked in a library. Also, the Librarian was a strict head of a cult full of witches. She had the chalice in her possession which Isla stole from her, after murdering her. This is the same chalice she uses in her rituals. So, we find that Isla already left her father in 1951, however he has her photo from 1952, so maybe she came back to meet his father. But as father says, she disappeared later. I don't think that she would try going back to germany again. So, she most probably disappeared in the tunnels and lived there for years. That's the reason why father already knows where she is or else why would he say to Lorraine that she is in the tunnels and send her there? Next, in between the comics, Isla meets Jessica in person and brings her to an isolated room in a library full of books about witchcraft, referencing to the source where she knew more about the curse and it's processes. This library would most probably be the same one in Germany, and as we know, Isla makes people see things and she had already started controlling Jessica halfway through her curse that time. Explaining the knowledge of that exotic curse from around Europe. Next, Isla's curse never take full control of a person until its been long. It's like as the time passes the curse gets stronger and it's easier to control the target, especially if the target is emotionally weakened. Thus, through the process, Isla does several things to torment its targets and makes them feel weak. Like Ed feels very angered (and weakened) when he (is made) feel that he couldn't protect his house and family from an invader, that too, Isla herself, their enemy. Thus he gets possessed in the end and Lorraine strengthens him by saying those things. In Jessica's case, she is already emotionally broken due to her lesbian sexuality and social abuse. But she ends up going against the curse fighting Isla emotionally and Isla has to convince her hard enough so that she commits suicide. It's a long scene at the cliff in the comic. Everytime we see Isla controlling someone, it's at that point of time when the person is emotionally weakened. Also, Each targeted person needs to perform, as you called it, step 1 of the curse. I.e., each person needs to murder another human and then commit suicide, which is very clear with Jessica. David was the child but arne took his curse over himself, the child one curse now acts upon Arne. So, Arne murders his landlord and tries to commit suicide at the end. Also, Ed tries to murder Lorraine at the warrens residence, coz he was the man of God. Second time, Ed is just possesed by Isla to stop him from ruining her curse, with that powder. So folks, that was the comment version of my horror history, explanation, faq and everything episode. I know nobody would read such a long comment, still I hope one day cz would see this and respond.

Nice video, but you forgot to talk about Father Kastner’s other children, Boromir and Faramir. After his eldest son Boromir went to an expedition to a volcano and died halfway there, Father Kastner went insane and sent his youngest son Faramir to his death but Faramir returned alive (barely) and in his depression and delusion he tried to burn Faramir alive, but failed. After that he tried to kill himself but failed and ended up in USA as Father Kastner.

I believe she made a deal to gain some of the demon's powers (illusions, posession, supernatural speed and possibly sharing its immortality) and the terms of the deal are are to keep harvesting souls in specific circmstances. Otherwise, she could just be a cultist who believes that serving a demon is the closest she can come to serving a godlike being.

I believe the demon could still be from the Ars Goethia. The Symbol you used as the picture in the horror history classroom looks a lot like an A. And there are a bunch of demons from the goethia who’s names begin with A. Examples being Amy, Andrius and Andromalius. I believe this demon could be one of these and in that case I hope to see a future film about it!

Eugenie Bondurant aka “The Occultist” was my acting instructor for many years. Wonderful person and I still remember nervously asking her about the Elite Acting Studio in St. Pete, FL & how to get in. She helped me get in to Andi Matheny’s Acting Studio. Didn’t even hardly know me, but helped me. This was after she was Tigris in Hunger Games. Wonderful & Sweet Woman. Extremely talented Singer, as well. I remember telling her and Andi I was moving to Atlanta and she gave me the best hug!!! I am 6’4” and she is almost my height. I admire this woman. Also, Patrick Wilson is from the same area. I worked at a local news station in Tampa where his dad worked & brother works now and I asked him for advice and he told me to get into Theatre. Which I did and I’ve been in the acting game for 8 years and still going strong. It’s awesome to see people you know personally in Blockbuster movies.

Why did I only find this channel today? That’s an amazing analysis! Also, I have a theory for those who were wondering what would Isla gain from this, or why couldn’t have Isla used Arne to complete her list of souls to be offered: Looking at the flow of the movie, it looks like the curse’s powers are conditioned, where each time she uses it to possess someone, it has to follow the “murder then suicide” pattern, meaning each time she uses it to her advantage, it in turn claims something back from her, in this case, her killing “vessel”. It probably gets its power from a willful sacrifice of one “hell-bound” (which I talked about below) soul. If that’s the case, after Arne murders Bruno from the curse, it’ll first complete its turn claiming Arne’s soul before Isla can use it again. Talking about Isla’s motives, I feel the demon Isla wants to summon ultimately wants to claim hell-bound souls that is offered on will aka the “suicide”, and Isla’s job is help it reach its goal by leading people to “murder” an innocent, which theologically speaking, will essentially rip them off their right to live and will be annihilated by the second death. Or in other words, hell-bound. I feel Isla, at the heights of her obsession, had ignorantly awakened some sealed off demon, and inadvertently lost her soul to it, and it used her as a vessel to wield its weapon, which is the curse, to continue from where it stopped. This explains why in the end, Isla is killed when she actually acts upon her own will to use her powers to kill the Warrens, by a killer that looked like herself. That’s when she sees the demon’s true colors, and how powerless she was in reality. The demon already has full control of her, and she was only serving its interests all along while she thought it’s increasing her own power to do what she wills. Therefore, the movie’s angle of omitting focus on what Isla gains from this is reflective of the one fact: she isn’t truly gaining anything, the demon used her weakness against herself and tricked her to give it what it wants, and the moment she’s of no use to it, the demon discarded her. Though we’ll never know why the specific people in the movie were chosen for this in the first place. Thanks for reading this far ;)

First off let me clarify on topics that I am familiar with. Witchcraft, which could be linked to most occults in those times, could be what Isla is using in here. Most of the questions that you have in this video like how Isla controls Ed Warren at the end and other similar questions can be answered by looking at her Altar and her powers. If you notice she is a devout practictioner of witchcraft. In some of the basic spells of witchcraft you can control a person and make them do a lot of things by the combination of certain herbs mixed together and burnt and using their ashes. These ashes need to be inside a person to work and since she makes him inhale them it works. Also another popular method is adding them to food.
