I’d say San Marino was and is a dependent state but not necessarily a subject state. That doesn’t make it independent logically but it makes it a country at least to a degree.

Also, Napoléon, when conquering Italy, was impressed by the fact San Marino remained independent for so long, and offered them canons. San Marino refused it, as they were worried it would cause Austria to attack them. So instead, Napoléon gave them food, and thus the country survived the Napoleonic Wars.

@@KarlSnarks yeah technically we do, but it's like 3/4 lessons in elementary school and the same in middle school and you can't learn anything in 4 hours, so when you finished those lessons you don't remember anything. Such a stupid system

@@alessandrogiardi1181 I don't know where you went to school. In my high school we had a subject literary called "History of San Marino" for 2 years straight.

San Marino is a lovely little country, well worth a day's visit when you are in the area. It has an attractive, well maintained castle and medieval type architecture. We enjoyed being there very much. I can't remember if they had their own money as we bought a meal and gifts using our cards.

it uses the Euro for convenience there are some San marino themed euro coins, and they are extremely rare: a 2003 one euro cent can be worth as much as 13 € which is insane, and the 2002 2 euro coin is worth 28€

MrHatoi No, the Papal States ended to exist in 1870, when Rome was completely conquered by Italy. Vatican City was founded in 1929, following an agreement between Mussolini and the Holy See, the Lateran Treaty.

Just checking in from 2215. (Hell of an algorithm, eh?) San Marino rules the catholic world with an Iron fist. The subjugation of India is nearly complete, and Brazil, the Star of the West, has been crippled in war and drought. Economically dependent on the growing superpower of Eswatini, San Marino has turned her conqueror's gaze closer to home, eying the ancient enemy: the Empire of Monaco. After a hundred years of sporadic war, San Marino is ready for the killing strike against her ancient sister. Writing from my exile in the Quebec Republic, I wonder if perhaps the time has come for me to just give up on this rock. I hear the U.S.S. Clinton just finished a new affordable cylinder city out past Europa. Might be a good place to get away from this stupidity for a while.

They were even offered to have a little sea access but they rejected...

I was in San Marino once and visited their local chapel on the hill. The mountain was very nice, there was only one major road which lead all the way to the capital, and the minimum drinking age was 14 believe it or not.

maybe some history lessons: Garibaldi owes a lot at San Marino, cause still HE personally was hosted and helped to avoid enemy forces, Napoleon granted freedom and respect (and 4 cannons) and also Lincoln does it, also 2nd world war Italy owes a lot on San Marino (100.000 refugees hosted and feeded on a population on 25.000), and also if we don't want to accept the legend of the dalmatian refugees founding San Marino e San Leo we have to admit that the pacts of Fossombrone stated the existence of a State-City like many others in Italy; San Marino survives and thanks to is smallness became a nation at least 500 years ago making it the oldest republic in the world anyway.

Regarding when it became a country, any of those dates could be used. It's like when did Australia, NZ, Canada become independent countries? It was gradual. No specific date. No big bang. But certain events helped establish their independence from the UK.

Portugal was still the same national identity. That's why we celabrate the 1st of Dezember of 1640 as the "Restoration day" of Portugal. King Filipe was the second of Spain but also the first of Portugal, 2 nations, 2 capital cities and 2 crowns in a union under the same house and figure. Portugal had a viceroy and it's own administrative board. It was when Filipe the 3rd wanted to give the Portuguese power to Spanish court that the Portuguese saw that they would become a province, and that's when the restoration happened.
