    As a HongKonger, I have few interesting facts about Macau to add on: 1. Macau uses Macanese Pataca as currency, though the Hong Kong Dollar can also be used at a rate of 1:1 (official rates are 1:1.03) 2. Despite a later handover, Macau is actually facing mainlandization earlier than Hong Kong, resulting in a lower level of freedom

  • @georgelabe-assimo4365

    @georgelabe-assimo4365

    5 жыл бұрын

    TinyPenguin That sort of “mainlandization” started in 1967 after the failure of the Portuguese authorities to suppress the 12-3 Incident. The handover in 1997 basically just rubber stamped PRC control over Macau anyways since they were basically de facto controlling it already.

    Actually just the ones who have parents having Portuguese ID before 1985, have the right to have a Portuguese ID and EU citizenship. This is because portugal stopped giving new macau people (immigrants) portuguese citizenship after 1985. Those who came after do not have that. In fact just some 180k macao citizens have the Portuguese ID, the other 2/3 of the population living there are either immigrants or born under parents with no Portuguese ID

    Great video EmperorTigerstar but you left out a important detail which is the 12-3 riots in 1966 where the Chinese people in Macau pretty much overthrew the Portuguese government and forced their governor to sign "a statement of apology" which gave the Chinese equal treatment, recognition of Chinese identity and de facto control over Macau, and effectively the end of Portuguese sovereignty, as opposed to administration. Although Portugal still had nominal control over the territory their rule over Macau as said by their foreign minister is like "a caretaker of a condominium under foreign supervision". Therefore obviously Portugal would give Macau back to China after the Carnation Revolution as the city itself is not even under their control and therefore is not in their best interest to keep it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12-3_incident

    Nice, sounds nice, though Weihai is technically the “other Hong Kong”, as it was held by the Brits for about 40 years. I’d also want to hear more about that time the Dutch tried to colonise Formosa.

    Just like Macau, Hong Kong is a city that attracted a lot of tourists in the past. There are too many violent protests in Hong Kong. Tourists are not recommended to stay in Hong Kong. Lives do not go on perfectly in Hong Kong recently. Many shop owners opt to close their shop during protests. Some shopping malls close during protests. I believe shopping is one of the popular activities for tourists so they can be affected. Tourists generally stay in city centre and tourists can be affected by riots at city centres (There are more than one busy commercial districts in Hong Kong and all are common riot area). Riots take place near hotels. The fact is that even if you choose a hotel far away from city centre such as those in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long district, you can still see protests. Unless the tourist concerned is very interested in politics, I see no reason for him/her to visit Hong Kong for leisure at present. Objectively speaking, Hong Kong is a city tourists should avoid. One more pieces of information: in some riots, somebody set a fire at railway stations and damaged the stations. On the fifth of October, all railway services except Airport Express suspended. Have the railway stations in your home country ever been burnt deliberately? If not, I recommend all travellers to evaluate the general safety situation of Hong Kong before your travel. I personally assume there will be arson in railway stations in Hong Kong again in the future, though I admit that this is simply a personal speculation.
