The Confusing Hierarchy of the Catholic Church

The bishop of Rome, better known as the pope, is at the top of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Below him are the cardinals, who pick the next pope. Then there are the archbishops and the bishops. Then the priests, then the deacons, then the non-clergy, the laity. It’s a ladder that can be confusing. In this episode of Intrigued Mind, we are taking a look at the sometimes confusing ladder of authority for the biggest church in the world.

As a person who was raised in the christian tradition, I feel pretty confident in saying that catholicism doesn't uphold the ideals of Christianity. They value wealth, they worship idols, many of their practices are in direct contradiction to the teachings of Christ. 🤔🙄💯

@@greentoke4589it is absolutely horrendous to openly speak against someone else's religious beliefs unless it causes harm or requires someone commit some type of criminal action, moral or legal. Basically, if they're not sacrificing people or animals, mind your business and shut your mouth. Just because you never felt the love of the lord, and your heart and spirit aren't seeking salvation, doesn't mean everyone else was like you. God already knew you would speak against the church. Save yourself, don't be a judas.

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[f] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Okay now regarding bishops and archbishops, theoretically they do need to be in charge of a diocese but sometimes they are raised to that rank as part of another office. For instance, all papal nuncios are raised to the rank of archbishop but obviously they don’t run a diocese since they’re already busy. The loophole of the Church is to assign these bishops a titular diocese. This is a diocese that once existed but has fallen into ruins either since the city was abandoned or the area fell to Muslim powers and the Christian community there was extinguished/converted. Archbishops in charge of running an archdiocese is called a metropolitan archbishop. An archdiocese is the biggest and most prominent diocese in an ecclesiastical province. For instance, the Province of Las Vegas has under it the suffragan dioceses of: Reno and Salt Lake City. In practice, the metropolitan archbishop has very little authority over their suffragan bishops since each diocese is run autonomously and not in a direct hierarchical manner. The finances and administration of one diocese is not connected to that of another’s and the only superior of a bishop is the Pope who runs the Church through a series of offices called the Roman Curia (since obviously he can’t supervise everything himself). Nonetheless, the archbishop can appoint an administrator if a diocese loses its bishop and the priests don’t recommend an administrator after a period of time. They also have precedence over the suffragan bishops but that’s mostly ceremonial.

What's wrong with Vatican II? FAQs 1. What is wrong with the Second Vatican Council? The Second Vatican Council taught doctrines which had been already condemned by the Church, and enacted disciplines which are contrary to the Church's teaching and constant practice. 2. What doctrines did it teach which were already condemned? There are four major errors concerning: (1) the unity of the Church; (2) ecumenism; (3) religious liberty; (4) collegiality. 3. What false doctrine does it teach concerning the unity of the Church? Vatican II teaches heresy concerning the unity of the Church, namely that the Church of Christ is not exclusively identified with the Catholic Church, but merely subsists in it. This heretical doctrine is contained principally in Lumen Gentium, and its heretical meaning is confirmed in statements of Paul VI and his successors, particularly in the 1983 Code of Canon Law, in the 1992 Statement concerning Church and Communion, and in the Ecumenical Directory. It is contrary to the teaching of the Catholic Church, contained principally in Satis Cognitum of Pope Leo XIII, Mortalium Animos of Pope Pius XI, Mystici Corporis of Pope Pius XII, and in the condemnations of the "Branch Theory" made by the Holy Office under Pope Pius IX. 4. What false doctrine does it teach concerning ecumenism? The teaching of Vatican II concerning ecumenism, which states that non-Catholic religions are a "means of salvation," is overtly heretical. This doctrine directly contradicts the teaching of the Church that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church, called by Pope Pius IX "a most well-known Catholic dogma." In addition, the ecumenical practices which have resulted from this heretical doctrine are directly contrary to Mortalium Animos of Pope Pius XI. 5. What false doctrine does it teach concerning religious liberty? The teaching of Vatican II on religious liberty, contained in Dignitatis Humanae, nearly word for word asserts the very doctrine which was condemned by Pope Pius VII in Post Tam Diuturnas, by Pope Gregory XVI in Mirari Vos, by Pope Pius IX in Quanta Cura, and by Pope Leo XIII in Libertas Praestantissimum. The teaching of Vatican II on religious liberty also contradicts the royalty of Jesus Christ in society as expressed in Quas Primas of Pope Pius XI, and the constant attitude and practice of the Church with regard to civil society. 6. What false doctrine does it teach concerning collegiality? The teaching of Vatican II concerning collegiality alters the monarchical constitution of the Catholic Church, with which she was endowed by the Divine Savior. The doctrine of Vatican II, confirmed by the 1983 Code of Canon Law, which states that the subject (the possessor) of the supreme authority of the Church is the college of bishops together with the pope, is contrary to the defined doctrine of the Council of Florence and of Vatican I. 7. What is wrong with the disciplines which have emanated from Vatican II? The 1983 Code of Canon Law contains the heresy of Vatican II concerning the Church, mentioned above. It also permits sacrilege to the Blessed Sacrament, by approving of its reception by non-Catholics, which is a mortal sin, and permits communicatio in sacris (common public worship) with non-Catholics, which is a mortal sin. In addition, the Ecumenical Directory of 1993 permits ecumenical practices which have always been taught by the Church to be mortally sinful.

Peter, claimed as being one of the very first 'bishops', counselled other 'bishops' " Do not LORD it over the flock" ( 1 Peter 5:3). How is it then that these 'bishops, have a degree in theology ( Peter was an "man unlettered & ordinary" ( Acts 4:13). They live in 'palaces'. Have regal robes, sit on 'thrones' & receive great reverence while wielding authority not only over a congregation ( as in the first century) but over a 'diocease' ( a Roman secular province)? There is no comparison with early Christianity and the catholic & also the protestant church. ( In the UK 'bishops' even sit in the 'house of LORDS'!!) What would Peter think?

They do not live in palaces. Bishops live in a normal house in their diocese. The Pope lives in an apartment in the Vatican. The grandeur that you see belongs to the whole of the Church and is not the personal property of any cleric. The Catholic Church is still the single most charitable organization in the world. Vestments are to denote rank and bishops wear them ceremonially. Bishops wear the regular street clothing of a priest when they go about their daily work. Each priest acts in persona Christi when he is celebrating Mass, as a successor of the apostles and with the authority he gave them. The "throne" you speak of, known as a cathedra, is Christ's, our King and Lord. I used to be a Protestant and converted after studying patristics. A thorough study of the early church will lead one to Catholicism. Saint Peter was our first Pope and would be well pleased that the hierarchy has held the Church in unity and assured its continuity.

If its the Catholic church we are talking about In Italy and around the world huge cathedrals at vast cost of labour have been built! How did this change from the simple ,meetings in the homes of the early Christians? It started with Pagan Emperor Constantine who when he legalised the 'church' in 312AD ( The council of Milan) handed over a number of pagan temples for the use of the church. Many 'gargoyles' and idols were renamed and therefore retained!. From then on as the Roman empire endorsed 'Christianity', making is the 'state religion' sumptuous chuches were erected to the 'glory of God' What would Jesus have said if he had walked through Rome and seen it all? Monasteries, or abbies, or convents (both male or female) are like cluster churches, with its own rules of life and hierarchy. Usually the principal of the monastery is equivalent to a bishop, but their jurisdiction is not a diocese. When a Monastery (or the other types) is inside a diocese, the bishop and the superior work closely together, this also applies for other religious orders that are not necessarily monasteries, or cloistered convents. Nuns, friars and monks are not necessarily ordained. They are lay religious. In a male monastery or convent you will find monks or friars there are also priests, but they are usually priests to serve their own communities, while in female monasteries or convents, the priest will be provided by either the male branch of that order, or by the diocese. In the case of cloistered female convents, the priest cannot enter the premises of the convent, only the church, where he is still separated from the nuns.
