I remember an interview with actor Michael Caine, who said he learned from some other actors that it was ok to do a dumb, fun, blockbuster movie for the money, that it wasn't a betrayal of your artistic values. The reasoning was simple, that big paycheck and the connections you made in the industry would pay later. Now you didn't need money, so you could do a low budget passion project of your own or act in someone else's. And in an industry like the film business, you can leverage those connections to help something else down the line. Black Eyed Peas has just play the music version of the game, they can now basically do whatever they want, and people will listen to it, at least once.

A lot the reason why their later stuff took off like that was because they caught the wave of MTV's TRL fan base which a lot of musical acts owe their success too. When The Black Eye Peas put their first two albums out, that's when the industry shift to the mickey mouse bubble gum pop era which we know and love oh so sarcastically.

And the timelines literally proves my point, they’ve been doing pop for so long that the hiphop fans are long gone and their 7 or 8 year pause completely took them out of the lime light, their surface level pop listeners who’d put their stuff on in the radio or at clubs are long gone.

I think the black eyed peas are mad impressive, the whole team is clearly really talented and very goal driven. They made the money they needed so they could keep preaching because they knew they had the talent to get it.

I don't care what anyone says even AFTER they went pop they were still in a league of their own NOBODY was making songs like them, how could they be basic when no songs like Pump it were on the radio when it came out. Say what you will they pushed the boundaries of pop, and they were different than anyone else in the pop scene

For my Will I AM, Furgie and Taboo I remeber, but Apl de ap is hard to remember. The popular songs are mostly clubbing songs as best way to get heard a lot is a good song people can dance to in the clubs, but Where is the love is my favorite songs of theirs to listen in free time, but know the songs of the E.N.D can play at any party to hype up the crowd to dance and just great way to get the mood started.

I feel like The Black Eyed Peas were ahead of their time in the music they made. They were great because they innovated in music. While their music may not feel "socially conscious", they are musicians at the end of the day. I felt like they experimented with music and got us to the kind of music we look to them for, which is super cool. About the critical acclaim, I feel like critics and their reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt. There have been some great songs that received no critical acclaim but remain cult favourites to this day.

But they were two entirely different groups, even in title. One was "Black Eyed Peas", while the other was "The Black Eyed Peas" which easily explains the transition in sounds. Two seperate groups, two seperate genre's regardless of the two groups sharing members. Furthermore, "The Black Eyed Peas" didn't drop Fergie, the group "Black Eyed Peas" just simply got back together & began making the music they always had, except this time around they have the association with their other pop group, which I'm sure they hope will translate into a larger fan base. Certainly a larger, but confused fan base. With that, I leave you with a very profound question. What chu gonna do wit all that junk, all that junk inside your trunk? Your answer could have immense implications, so think deep before answering.

Tbf I really like the fact that the black eyed piece dipped their toes into a lot of genres. I feel like that makes their earlier albums really interesting. Every song is something different, and it was always exciting to listen to the next one. They were also really soulful

I don't really care on what kind of music they make. They always put their entire heart on every project, their music and lyrics ufff always on point. I won't lie, I miss Fergie ferg in the band, it would be so cool if they would've made Masters of the sun with her, but anyway, they will still succeed even without her, for many years on. Translation is so fucking awesome :3

I believe the whole "selling out" argument is a false narrative, as if it's easy or a "choice" to make global chart topping hits! This only shows the range of talent of Will.I.Am how he can both make critically acclaimed music and global pop hits! At the end of the day they returned to "critically acclaimed" music which didn't sell as much as their "sell out music" - only difference now is that it's more original since they're not doing it for the money anymore thanx to the stacks they made from their previous "sell out music" so you know it's more real than their first albums!

Replying to the question in the intro, Will I AM, Taboo, & Apl de Ap are the only consistent members, they had Kim Hill & Fergie as a 4th member but I see them as a trio.

I totally agree with you about “Where Is The Love”. It’s pop that rocks and it carries the cheese as perfectly as a slice of gourmet pizza. It’s shamelessly upbeat and reaffirming to the inner human. If I play it right now, it has the same fresh resonance for me as the first time I heard it, what like 20 years ago. It stands as a masterpiece in the genre.

The reason why Fergie and Will.I.Am are the most popular in the group is because both of them did their own things on the side and had hits. They were also the ones to go solo.

I tell you, this guys defined my generation of music, I heard their music everywhere growing up, they hold a deep place in my heart.

I love how it hurts so much to a lot of people not being able to categorize The Blacked Eyed Peas music into a single genere. Why should they stick to a single genere? Why shouldn’t they experiment? What is the problem with going back and forward on project motives or to have any deep motive at all? i remember hearing their The Beginning album when it came out, i was in elementary school at the time and kinda liking it at first, but around that time my brother was getting the kinect for the xbox 360 for his birthday and i remember us getting one of my most favorite games of all time as well with it, The Black Eyed Peas: Experience. I remember playing the shit outta that game when it released and seeing many songs from them ive never seen from them but i mainly just played the ones i knew and loved. It was that game that made me absolutely love the album The Beginning and still do to this day, and i remember being surprised about their early records being nothing to the poppy Don't Stop The Party like vibe that i listened to quite a lot back then.

One of the funniest tidbits about them to me was how Monkey Business had a song criticizing other songs for just going "Boom boom boom boom", only for the BEP to release Boom Boom Pow a few years later.

All these takes are completely accurate and they're the exact reasons I love the BEPs. They're hip hop taken past conscious rap into alternative/blended genres and then all funneled into pop. All their music is completely surface level, there's nothing deep or elusive about the instruments, lyrics, effects, or themes. It's crowded minimalism, all these really simple elements come together to make solid compositions, Monkey Business is a perfect example of this. The musician in me wants to pick everything apart when I listen to a BEP song, but I usually find nothing surprising or unexpected, just that everything is well composed, well produced. Almost like it's not there for me to pay attention to, I think that's the existential dread he talks about. They don't create any new techniques, nor are they excellent in any one musical aspect, they're just all around good, and they're a well balanced group, plus they target their songs toward as large an audience as possible. They make music that we're gonna show aliens when they ask what music is.

I met Taboo after they made Masters of the Sun. He was talking about how they were able to get back to their roots and be themselves. He was really pumped and excited. It was right before he went on Stage in Olympia Washington and Killed it! It was an honor

8:56 Zeppelin IV easily hits that mark. The first 5 songs (actually, every song on the album) are all considered some of the best rock songs of all time. I'm not actually a huge Beatles fan, but Abbey Road accomplishes the same feat with the first 7 songs on the record. Back in Black is definitely up there as well, Joshua Tree, Van Halen, MMLP (not counting skits). probably many other albums as well, those are just off the top of my head

I love the APL song... There are many songs where fergie's voice doesn't appear so much or at all, but no one mentions that thing. They are focused on telling us APL and Taboo didn't do anything because of Fergie's fault. They are focused on criticizing those "famous songs" just to confirm they didn't listen to the whole albums.

Yeah, it could be, but including female voices made them DIFFERENT and I liked them more because of that. I remember I was just a teenager and those parts were my favorites.

Salmonfaky its a boring masterpiece. One the one side it doesnt have any emotion whatsoever doesnt do anything to me, but on the other side it slaps me in the face with masterpieceness. Weird song.

THE END was definitely fascinating. I like a lot of songs on the album even though I’m not a fan of the band. That whole album was killer

Ruttu Boje They are popular or well known! The OP and other ignoramous folks may just not be cultured enough to really know them well... Apl is so popular especially in Asia (probably way more than Will)... I bet Taboo is also pretty popular in Latin America... The least popular for me was Fergie (who was sadly more of a sex object than anything)... I think the addition of Fergie made them more marketable but certainly WAY LESS classy...

Well that and the fact that Fergie was doing her own thing beforehand and her and Will.I.am did more popular colabs with other artists when not making songs as a group.

Will.i.am, Fergie, apl D, taboo I only know because I’ve been a huge fan of them since elephunk

Ive had all their CDs as a kid, listening to Bridging the Gap, elephunk, and Monkey business, then THE E.N.D came out in middle school for me. I bump them all the time and Masters of the sun i think is my favorite project of theirs

Also voiced Sally in some of the Peanuts cartoons, aka Charlie Brown and Snoopy for you young folks. I remember the first video she was in with Black Eyed Peas. I'm thinking to to myself that is the girl from Kids Incorporated.

This was a great video.. loved the commentary. I was a fan of groups like Tribe and De La. So When the BEP's started I was on it. Then left them alone when Fergie joined (still liked some of the music though). It's good to know that they are going back to roots.. Dilly Dilly!

The group, the Blackeyespeas are moving on, like the power of light, and turning in any direction, With out stopping. What are we going to do? That is, go on for the ride.

No sequence of film has ever got me more hyped than when Boom Boom Pow kicked in during G Force. No joke, 7-year old me was going berserk.

I have to admit... I was looking for a video like this, remembering them from the early 2000's and overtime, increased their fame and slowly completely erasing their names from the billboards to feeling as if they had disappeared. I used to love their earliest vibe from the socially conscious and well... That's why I fell in love with them in the first place, y'know? But over time, it became an overkill and I couldn't enjoy them anymore. Was wondering how it happened. You might have missed some points, but the overall of the video definitively explained it. Thanks for that!

I just watched this video and fell in love with this channel and the black eyed peas imma check out all their songs

After the Great Recession, they just made songs to help people forget about their current situation and just have a good time and enjoy the moment

I can understand how you feel with the guilty pleasure of pop music, and feeling like there should be more conscious music. You want meaning and wonder. I think the proof is in the pudding. Black eyed pease didn’t go anywhere, it was “critically acclaimed” Fergie, gave them marketability, relatability, pop vibe, and as soon as that element was gone they were back to critically acclaimed. Is that BEP’s fault or is that society. A label or band can only give what the audience wants, it can never be the other way around unless you are in fact societies want already. Being black and conscious is never what teens or people who listen to music want to hear by majority. When you go to the club or football game where music is marketed they don’t want to be preached to and music only made for personal use isn’t marketable for everyone. They pretty much proved it when they did it and it didn’t sell. So you can’t blame them, you would have to blame society. People get angry at a generic song as if people don’t love generic songs.

This idea that a song must be about one subject or is "generic" is also ridiculous. Concious songs can also be GENERIC, how many female singers have we seen already release a balad about women empowerment or the struggles of being a woman? every single female singer, multiple times. People get bored by one subject. Concious stuff can be boring as well, people don't want to be depressed ALL THE TIME, that's how disco was created, too many R&B stars singing about heartache and cheating spouses, it got bland.

@@sigorolata2829 Well it didn’t get bland there are still singer song writers out there that make some pretty damn good and even near perfect conscious stuff Kendrick Lamar & Radiohead being my favorite examples. But yeah being conscious can work when it is authentic and is true to heart but sometimes being woke and conscious can feel exploitive and marketable weirdly like pop music but I would like to say pop and conscious music can be done right
